Split This Rock is pleased to announce our second annual poetry contest, to be judged by poet and National Book Award finalist Patricia Smith. First place $500; 2nd and 3rd place, $250 each. Winning poems will be published on http://www.SplitThisRock.org, and the 1st-place winner will be invited to read winning poem at Split This Rock Poetry Festival, 2010.

Reading Fee: $25, which supports Split This Rock Poetry Festival

First-place winner will receive $500, free registration, and an invitation to read the winning poem at Split This Rock Poetry Festival in March 2010. The winning poem will be published on our website.

Second-place and third-place winners receive $250 each. Poems will be published on our website, and winners will receive free registration at the March 2010 festival.

Details:

Submissions should be in the spirit of Split This Rock: socially engaged poems, poems that reach beyond the self to connect with the larger community or world; poems of provocation and witness. This theme can be interpreted broadly and may include but is not limited to work addressing politics, government, war, leadership; issues of identity (gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, disability, body image, immigration, cultural heritage,
etc.); community, civic engagement, education, activism; and poems about history, Americana, cultural icons. Read the winning poems from 2008 here.

Submission guidelines:

Send up to 3 unpublished poems, no more than 6 pages total, in any style, in the spirit of Split This Rock (see above).

Staple one cover page to your submissions containing your name, address, phone number, email, and the titles of your poems. This is the only part of the submission which should contain your name.

Judge’s bio: Patricia Smith, author, poet, teacher, performer, is the author of five books of poetry: Blood Dazzler (Coffee House Press, 2008), a book of poems chronicling the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina; Teahouse of the Almighty (Coffee House Press, 2006), a 2005 National Poetry Series selection, winner of the 2007 Paterson Poetry Prize, and finalist for the 2007 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; Close to Death (1993); Big Towns, Big Talk (1992); and Life According to Motown (1991). In addition, she has authored the history “Africans In America” and the children’s book Janna and the Kings. Smith’s work has appeared in Poetry, The Paris Review, TriQua
rterly, and many other journals. She is a National Book Award Finalist, Pushcart Prize winner, Cave Canem faculty member, and four-time individual champion of the National Poetry Slam, the most successful poet in the competition’s history.

Bomb Fiction Contest

Founded in 1981, BOMB has championed and encouraged the literary efforts of both established and emerging writers for more than a quarter-century, with a contributing editorial board that boasts contemporary giants such as A.M. The Arts & Letters Prizes

The Arts & Letters Prizes competition offers publication and a $1000 (U.S.) Prize for winners in: Fiction (Short Story), Poetry, Drama (One-Act Play), and Creative Nonfiction (Essay). A $15 submission fee, payable in U.S. dollars, includes a two-issue subscription to Arts & Letters. Please make checks or money orders payable to “GCSU” (note “Arts & Letters” in the memo section). All submissions will be considered for publication. (International authors: Please see our website at for our new policy concerning international submissions.)

Submission Deadline: Submissions should be postmarked January 1 to March 16.

For all submissions: Submit only original, unpublished work in English. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable if the editors are notified immediately that the work has been accepted elsewhere. Authors may submit more than one manuscript; however, each submission should include the required entry fee of $15, which provides for a one-year subscription (fall and spring issues). Include a cover sheet with your name, address (where you want your subscription/s to be sent), and phone/email contact information; also include the title of your work. For those submitting more than one manuscript, you may designate a gift subscription to be sent (please provide name & address where you want the subscription sent). Send a no. 10 self-addressed, stamped envelope is you wish to receive an announcement of winners (usually in late June/early July). No manuscripts can be returned.

The author’s name should not appear anywhere in the manuscript, only in the cover letter (for creative nonfiction, if relevant to this policy, please avoid using your full name in the manuscript).

For fiction and creative nonfiction: Submit one story or essay, typed, double-spaced, no more than 25 pages long.

For poetry: Submit up to 8 PAGES of poetry, typed, single-spaced, one poem (or part of a poem) per page.

For one-act plays: Submit one work, typed in standard format.

For all submissions: Please mail your submission unfolded and unstapled in a large-size manila envelope and write “Fiction,” “Poetry,” “Nonfiction” or “Drama” on the outside.

No previously published works or works accepted for publication elsewhere. Author’s name must not appear on the manuscript. Include a cover sheet containing major title and subtitles, author’s name, full address, phone & email. “Contest Entry” should be clearly indicated on both the outer envelope and the cover sheet. Manuscripts will not be returned. Nimrod retains the right to publish any submission. Include SASE for results only. Winners will also be brought to Tulsa for the Awards Ceremony in October.

GUIDELINES

Send manuscripts of 48 or more pages of poetry, no more than one poem per page, no smaller than 12 point type in an easily readable font. Poems may have appeared in journals and chapbooks, but not in full-length, single-author collections.

Name, address, phone number, e-mail address, title of work, and title of poetry collection must appear on the cover letter. only The goal is “blind” judging. Author’s name should not appear anywhere in manuscript except the cover letter.

No restriction on content, style, or subject—we’re looking for the best manuscript.

All checks or money orders for entry fee—$25—should be made payable to Lost Horse Press. Submissions without a reading fee enclosed will not be considered. A $50 fee will be charged for returned checks.

Include SASE (number #10 business envelope) with sufficient postage for notification of finalists and winner. Manuscripts will be recycled. We are sorry but manu
scripts cannot be returned.

If manuscripts arrive postage due, they will be returned.

Use white, lightweight paper. Quality paper won’t impress readers the way a quality manuscript will.

About this contest: Mary Sue Koeppel, Writecorner Press Co-editor, created and conducted the national Sue Saniel Elkind Poetry Contest sponsored by Kalliope until 2005 when she retired from the position of Kalliope editor. She and fellow editor, Robert B. Gentry, developed this contest in order to continue to reward the writers of fine poetry.

The Writecorner Press Poetry Contest follows the ethics guidelines recommended by the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP). Judges review submissions with no author identification. (See contest guidelines.) The following are ineligible to receive monetary awards: poems already published elsewhere, poems by Writecorner editors or judges, relatives of judges or editors. Chippens Call for Submissions

The Poetry Society of New Hampshire sponsors four National Contests open to all poets, members or not. Judges for the contests are not members of the Poetry Society of New Hampshire. Prizes are awarded to four places, 1st place, $100, 2nd place, $50, 3rd and 4th places $25 each. Winning poems will be published in our quarterly magazine, The Poets Touchstone, and winning poets will receive one copy of the issue in which their poems appear. Rights revert to the author after publication.

Guidelines

Entries that do not meet the guidelines will not be considered or returned.

Poems must be postmarked by the deadline date.

Subject and form are open.

Length limited to 40 lines.

One poem per page.

Poems must be typed.

Two copies of each poem, one with NO identification (no name, no address), the other with the name and address in the upper right corner.

#10 SASE for winners list only. Poems will not be returned.

Entry fee is $3 for the first poem, and $2 each for others. Entries limited to 5 poems per poet per contest.

Poems must not be previously published, have won a prize, nor be currently entered in another contest.

Poems must be postmarked by the deadline date. Deadlines are: August 15th, November 15th and February 15th, May 15th.
