NCW Short Fiction Competition

Stories can be in any style or genre, though they should have a broad appeal.

Max 5,000 words.

Prizes are 1st: $1,000; 2nd: $250; 3rd: $100.


Winners and honorable mentions will be published in and receive a free copy of the winners’ anthology,

Pooled Ink: Celebrating the 2013 NCW Contest Winners, due out in December.

Eighth International Aeon Award Short Fiction Contest, 2013

Albedo One, Ireland’s magazine of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, proudly announces the launch of the Eighth International Aeon Award Short Fiction Contest, 2013. The Aeon Award is a writing competition, and its goals are to promote writers and writing in the speculative fiction genres, including science fiction, fantasy, horror or anything unclassifiable or in-between.
The contest is open to writers from all nationalities for stories of up to 10,000 words long, that are previously unpublished in English. Grand Prize is €1000 and publication in Albedo One. Second and third place prizes are €200 and €100 and publication in Albedo One.
The contest is open from January 1st 2013 to the end of November 2013,
after which the winning stories are chosen by our Grand Judges, Ian Watson, Mike Resnick, Todd J. McCaffrey and Michael Carroll.
Since 2004, the Aeon Award contest has promoted exceptional work of authors in speculative fiction. Aside from winning the cash prizes and publication in Albedo One, winning and shortlisted stories have been given Honourable Mentions or been reprinted in prestigious volumes such as the Year’s Best Science Fiction, edited by Gardner Dozois, and the Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror, edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link and Gavin Grant. Other winning stories have been translated and published in prestigious European magazines, including Phase X (Germany), edited by Ulrich Blode, and Galaxies SF (France), edited by Pierre M. Gevart.
A modest entry fee of 7.50 euro applies, which can be paid easily and securely online via PayPal on our website.

We are looking for works of up to 5000 words in each category. Previously published work are accepted so long as can legally obtain free, one time, one site, permanent web publication rights.


  • All entries must be submitted via email sent to, one entry per email. NO SUBMISSIONS ARE ACCEPTED VIA MAIL.
  • NO PDF FILES please. We need to be able to work with your submission. Best format is Microsoft Word or plain text.
  • In the body of your email submission include author name, real name (if different from author name) and email address.
  • In the body of your email submission include information about any previous publication.
  • Only submissions written in English are considered at this time.
  • Entries with pornographic theme, hate speech, and those that may be classified as personal or institutional “rant” are disqualified. No other theme restrictions are imposed.
  • Unless explicitly requested in the body of your email, all qualified submissions will be posted on upon receipt and an initial assessment of quality.
  • You may submit to both categories.
  • The contest may be extended at discretion until a minimum of 500 entries have been submitted.
  • Winners are chosen based on a combination of pixelhose readers’ vote (“like” and/or comments) and pixelhose editorial staff decision.
  • Winners are selected at the sole discretion of pixelhose staff. All decisions are final.

Creative Writing Institute’s Spring Fling Anthology Contest – No Entry Fee!

This is a themed contest.  Stories must be between 1000 and 1750 words and may be any genre, but the following sentence must appear in the story: Tonight we re-write the rules… ”

CASH PRIZES!  Three cash winners and seven additional Judge’s Choice stories will receive publication in our first anthology and Ebook, entitledOVERRULED!We will endeavor to sell the anthology for ninety-nine cents. Proceeds will benefit Creative Writing Institute, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity that sponsors cancer patients in writing courses.

Limnisa Bluethumbnail Short Story Competition 2013

This international contest is open worldwide and is for short stories on any subject up to 3,000 words.

Deadline: April 1st, 2013.

1st Prize:  One week Writers’ Retreat or Workshop in 2013 or 2014 at Limnisa, our seaside location near Agios Georgios, Methana, Greece:    All inclusive: Full board, 7 nights accommodation in single room,  optional daily yoga sessions, literary evening, use of all Limnisa facilities: beach, bikes, international library etc. OR five online sessions of personal tutoring.

2nd and 3rd Prize: 50 % discount on the Writers’ Retreat or Workshop (see above). OR a free online session of personal tutoring or feedback on written work.

Wag’s Revue Writing Contest

The editors are excited to announce that beginning with Issue 11, the magazine compensates $100 per piece (poem or group of poems, essay, or short story).

Wag’s Revue holds two contests annually, the Winter Writers Contest from December through March and the Summer Writers Contest from June through August. The contests are open to all three genres and are judged by the editors. For each, first prize is $1000 and guaranteed publication, second prize $500 and third $100. All pieces are considered for publication. There is a $20 reading fee per piece.

Open reading periods are held from early March through May and from September through November. Submissions are currently open.

This year, we switched over to Submittable (the service formerly known as Submishmash). There you’ll find all guidelines and can upload your submission. While we allow for simultaneous submissions, if your work is accepted elsewhere, please withdraw the piece on Submittable, rather than emailing us about it.
