Tony Ardizzone, originally from the North Side of Chicago, is the author of eight books of fiction, including the novel The Whale Chaser (2010) and the recently completed interconnected collection, The Calling of Saint Matthew: Stories of Rome. He is a winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, and a Chancellor’s Professor of English at Indiana University.

The decisions of the judge are entirely his own, and are final. Winners will be notified by email.

All entries will get feedback. Winning short stories will receive a short paragraph from the judge and will be published.

Write Reality: The Reality Show Idea Contest

Last year, we received over 100 submissions from new and established authors alike. Never before published, they were gathered together in our Second Annual Mystery Times collection. Each story was read and rated on the same set of parameters; each judge brought his or her own unique talents and tastes to the task at hand.

The quality of the stories was outstanding and the 2012 book rode the #1 and 2 spot on the Amazon Hot New Mystery Release List for FOUR weeks!

So, yep, we’re doing it again!

Our 2013 Showcase Mystery Times 2013 seeks new mystery short stories.

Submission Guidelines:

Theme: Mystery–It can be it murder, cozy, paranormal, soft-boiled, hard-boiled, police procedural, suspense, thriller, or amateur detective.

What is a mystery? In a mystery, the main character must track down the truth about an event, often a murder. If the protagonist is in any danger, it usually becomes a problem only as the detective/protagonist approaches the truth. That’s your base, how it plays out is up to you!

No gratuitous sex or violence.

The competition is open to all writers in English except current employees of Buddhapuss Ink LLC.

Submissions will be accepted from April 1, 2013 to July 15, 2013.

You must be 18 or older to enter.

No previously published work(s)

Simultaneous submissions are not permitted.

Entries should be between 3000-7000 words in length.

Send your submissions via email with the subject line “Submission for MYSTERY TIMES TEN” from <your name> with your story as an attached file in .doc or .docx (Word) format PLEASE INCLUDE in the body of the email:

Peer Review Process and eBook Publication

The Poetic Republic Poetry Prize is a process for the selection of poems for publication based on anonymous peer review.

Selection systems are typically driven by judges of repute, celebrities, editorial teams, fan bases or “vote for me” campaigns. Increasingly, celebrity pervades publication decisions.

The Poetic Republic Poetry Prize is different. It is a rigorous process where participants read each other’s work in isolation unaware of other participants’ opinions, comments or identity. It is a neutral space.

Participation is anonymous.

The event is structured so that participants can question their own understanding and learn from others whilst simply enjoying the experience of taking part.

There will be a digital eBook publication featuring the best work from the prize. This will be our second co-created publication where the act of taking part accomplishes the editorial process.

Publication may be under an entrant’s real name or under a pseudonym.

2013 Poetic Republic Poetry Prize

The two prizes may be awarded to the same person. Qualification for the portfolio prize requires two entries.

The Judging will take place over 7 weeks in May and June.

Participants read each other’s work in small groups of 12 poems in a three round process. The combined effect is very powerful. In the final (third) round, everyone reads the shortlisted 12 poems.

During judging, participants have access to groups of poems but poems are not published on the website.

From each group of 12 poems participants select their preferred 4 poems and leave a short twitteresque comment against their choices.

Commenting is a valuable part of the process but it is also fun and fascinating. We have set out some “thoughts about comments” which may be useful.

Participants can read comments left against their own poems after the judging has finished.

The eBook Publication will include 48 poems together with a selection of the best or most interesting comments. To be short listed or included in the publication entrants must have taken part in the first two rounds of judging.

The selection of poems for publication will be made by the contribution of all the participants. The published poets will be invited to provide background details for inclusion in the publication. The short listed poets will be invited to make the selections of comments for publication.

Any subject. Style: Poetry or Prose Poetry. Maximum 42 lines. Previously unpublished work. £7 per poem.

ON THE SAME PAGE FESTIVAL 2013 WRITER’S COMPETITION

West Jefferson, NCAshe County’s On the Same Page Literary Festival, now in its sixth year, is opening the Festival’s annual writing competition. In association with the 2013 Festival, which will take place September 17-21 in Ashe County, NC, the Page Crafter’s Prize recognizes writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry with cash awards. Winning writers will have the opportunity to read their work during the On the Same Page Literary Festival.

The Page Crafter’s competition is designed to encourage and acknowledge emerging writers and to reinforce the annual theme of the On the Same Page Literary Festival, which for 2013 is “Secrets.

Page Crafter’s Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Prize money totaling $900 will be presented: $200 for first place, $100 for second place, in each category.

Deadline for submissions is July 15, 2013,

(postmarked snail mail or email submissions) and winners will be notified by August 19, 2013.  Entries should be centered on the 2013 festival theme “Secrets.” Prose entries are limited to 1,000-words; no more than 50 lines of poetry will be accepted. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 (U.S.) per submission is required. There is no limit to the number of entries per person.

Fiction Writing Bootcamp May 3-5, 2013

Two Publishing Pros to Offer Fiction Writing Bootcamp May 3-5 in Santa Barbara

Two literary insiders team up to help budding authors craft novels that will catch the eye of agents and publishers. Shelly Lowenkopf and Toni Lopopolo began the bootcamps in 2010 in the Santa Barbara/Ventura area. The latest edition is “Bare Knuckles Bootcamp” which brings their accumulated knowledge and street creds as Executive Editors with Macmillan, St. Martins, Bantam and Dell, along with Ms. Lopopolo’s literary agency work, to help writers achieve their dreams of publication.
“We’re looking for a few good writers who have the stamina and imagination to reach the level of marketable authors,” Ms Lopopolo said. “We wanted to hone the skills of more talented area writers.” The camp is a three-day intensive limited to ten writers who must submit up to ten pages and a synopsis in advance to be accepted.

The bootcamp will delve into: your opening page (velocity vs. set up); refining point of view; how to avoid fatal story errors; and an area where many writers never do enough, revision, revision, revision. Other areas covered include: creating charged dialogue; how to create your character’s defining moment; how to make your story win every round; and, much more.

“So many people dive into writing without understanding that novel writing is not like a thesis for an English Lit class,” Shelly Lowenkopf said. “To be published, a writer must meet a high standard, one that is achievable IF you know where the bar is. Toni and I have been raising that bar for years and will now pass on our experience to new writers.”
Shelly Lowenkopf has held major editorial positions with Sherbourne Press (Editor-in-Chief); Dell Publishing (Director, Los Angeles office); Clio Books (Editor-in-Chief); Ross-Erickson (Editor-in-Chief); and, Capra Press (Advisory and Acquisitions Editor). He has seen over seven hundred books and hundreds of short story and essay projects through the publishing process.  Currently a freelance consultant and teacher, his clients include novelists, retired and active academics, and the humorist creator of one of the most popular television series of all time.  For over 30 years, he was a fixture at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, running his famous nightly Pirate Sessions.

Lowenkopf taught courses in short story, novel, dramatic writing, editing, genre fiction, and revision at the graduate level in one of the most prestigious writing programs in America at University of Southern California, where he was given a Lifetime Teaching Award.  He is a past regional president of the Mystery Writers of America. His most recent book, The Fiction Writer’s Companion, is a guide to terms, concepts, and forms related to storytelling.

Literary Agent, Toni Lopopolo, brings a book publishing resume that began in 1970 in the publicity dept of Bantam Books, where she helped publicize authors such as Philip Roth, Barbara Cartland, Isaac Asimov, and Louis L’Amour.

She next served as Library Promotion Director at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, until Houghton Mifflin offered her a position in Boston as Marketing Manager, Paperback Books. Her big campaigns included Even Cowgirls Get the Blues by Tom Robbins.  When Macmillan offered Toni the title of Executive Editor, she moved back to New York City and published Judy Mazel’s Beverly Hills Diet, Elvis 56 by Al Wertheimer, among other hits. Next St. Martin’s Press made an offer she couldn’t refuse and Toni became Executive Editor from 1981 to 1990. She published Hot Flashes by Barbara Raskin and Rich and Famous by Kate Coscarelli plus Elsa Lanchester, Herself, by Elsa Lanchester, On The Other Hand by Fay Wray as well biographies of Lillian Hellman, Mary McCarthy, and many other titles. She has taught fiction and narrative non-fiction writing at Temple University in Philadelphia.


In 1991, Toni opened Literary Management and has sold books for authors Sol Stein, Lee Silber, Lillian Glass, Steve Duno, Nancy Baer, Flo Fitzgerald, Judith Smith-Levin, Howard Olgin, Jeanette Baker, Larry Seeley, Shelly Lowenkopf, and many others.

Last Call: The Producer’s Club Short Play Contest

About
The Producer’s Club Short Play Contest is to encourage emerging writers and find original shows we can produce. There is no fee to submit your play to the contest. We select the best of 5 plays from the submissions we receive. Once you are accepted, a $300 refundable deposit will be required. The deposit will be returned as long as your play sells 20 tickets in total to all three performances assigned to your show.

All plays selected will be given a three-performance run at the Producer’s Club on 44th street and 9th Ave in Midtown Manhattan, NY.

Submission Rules
In order to submit a play, please send the following via email:
1. A 200- to 300-word synopsis of the play
2. The complete script in either a word document or PDF file
3. Your telephone number and home address
4. Your bio

Play Guidelines
1.    Entries must be submitted by May 10th 2013.
2.    All entries must the writer’s original work.
3.    The entries should be between 10 and 15 minutes.
4.    Maximum number of actors/actresses is 5 per entry.
5.    The play will be produced with minimal set/props/costuming.
6.    The judges will announce their selections on May 24th and the successful writers will be notified via email.

As soon as your play is accepted, you will be sent the festival guidelines. The refundable $300 deposit should be paid before the show rehearsals and will be refunded after the sales of the first 20 tickets; that means an average of 7 people per performance = 20 audience members in total to all three performances assigned. Each ticket will be $15.00 and will be admission to 5 short plays, that’s a full evening of great theater for $15.00 for your friends and family.

Prizes
After all plays have had their three-performance run, the first place play will receive the $2,000.00 video package. The video will be a three-camera shoot of the play with pickup shots, close ups, etc.  The video will then be edited and a DVD will be created.  The producer/submitter of the play will be given 10 copies of the DVD.  You will own the video and can use it for any legal and non-derogatory purpose.

During the course of the performances three judges will attend, one per performance, to judge the plays. This panel of judges will choose the winning play and all decisions are final decision. Winners will be announced one week after the last performance.

Again, there is no submission fee. Only those plays that are accepted will be required to send in participant deposit, which is full refunded if at least 20 people buy a ticket to see your play. (Each play will be listed separately on our website for ticketing purpose.)

The Glint Awards

Guidelines

Topic
The topic for Volume I of the Glint Awards Anthology is open.  In general, submissions should aspire to “show, not tell” in keeping with the spirit of our organization’s adopted quotation by Anton Chekov, “Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”

Eligibility
The contest is open to all writers age 18+.  All submissions must be original, the writer’s own work and previously unpublished in any format.

Categories

  • Prose
    • Short stories from 1,000 – 6,000 words.  You may submit one short story in a single entry.
    • Flash prose pieces should not exceed a 1,000 word count limit.  You may send up to three flash prose pieces in a single entry.
  • Poetry
    • Poems should not exceed a 1,000 word count limit.  You may send up to three poems in a single entry.

$2,500 Awaits Winners of Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition

Writers of short fiction are encouraged to enter the 2013 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. The competition has a thirty-three year history of literary excellence, and its organizers are dedicated to enthusiastically supporting the efforts and talent of emerging writers of short fiction whose voices have yet to be heard. Lorian Hemingway, granddaughter of Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway, is the author of three critically acclaimed books: Walking into the River, Walk on Water, and A World Turned Over. Ms. Hemingway is the competition’s final judge.

Prizes and Publication:

The first-place winner will receive $1,500 and publication of his or her winning story in Cutthroat: A Journal of the Arts. The second – and third-place winners will receive $500 each. Honorable mentions will also be awarded to entrants whose work demonstrates promise. Cutthroat: A Journal of the Arts was founded by editor-in-chief Pamela Uschuk, winner of the 2010 American Book Award for her book Crazy Love: New Poems, and by poet William Pitt Root, Guggenheim Fellow and NEA recipient. The journal contains some of the finest contemporary fiction and poetry in print, and the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition is both proud and grateful to be associated with such a reputable publication.

What to submit:

* Stories must be original unpublished fiction, typed and double-spaced, and may not exceed 3,500 words in length. We have extended our word limit for the first time in thirty years to 3,500 words rather than 3,000. There are no theme or genre restrictions. Copyright remains property of the author.

Who may submit:

* The literary competition is open to all U.S. and international writers whose fiction has not appeared in a nationally distributed publication with a circulation of 5,000 or more. Writers who have been published by an online magazine or who have self-published will be considered on an individual basis.

Submission requirements:

* Submissions may be sent via regular mail or submitted online. Please visit our online submissions page for complete instructions regarding online submissions. Writers may submit multiple entries, but each must be accompanied by an entry fee and separate cover sheet. We do accept simultaneous submissions; however, the writer must notify us if a story is accepted for publication or wins an award prior to our July announcements. No entry confirmation will be given unless requested. No SASE is required. * The author’s name should not appear on the story. Our entrants are judged anonymously. Each story must be accompanied by a separate cover sheet with the writer’s name, complete mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, the title of the piece, and the word count. Manuscripts will not be returned. These requirements apply for online submissions as well.

Deadlines and Entry Fees:

* The entry fee is $15 for each story postmarked by May 1, 2013. The late entry fee is $20 for each story postmarked by May 15, 2013. We encourage you to enter by May 1 if at all possible, but please know that your story will still be accepted if you meet the later deadline. Entries postmarked after May 15, 2013 will not be accepted. Entries submitted online after May 15, 2013 will not be accepted. Writers may submit for the 2014 competition beginning May 16, 2013.

The 2013 Awards Programs are underway! Keep an eye on the blog and the Facebook page for updates. This years judges are David Morrell for fiction and Lee Gutkind for nonfiction.

The prize amounts this year will be: $1000 for the Grand Prize (one each for fiction and nonfiction), and two runner ups per category (a total of four), each of whom will receive $650. A total of $4600 in prizes. We will also be reviewing all entries for potential publication in 2014 via our press. Selected entries will receive a full worldwide print/ebook release.

What are we looking for?

All work will be eligible despite genre, form, or length. So we’ll take full length manuscripts, collections short or long, and excerpts. You can send a PDF galley of your work, or even the bound hardcopy book. We don’t care about what the big presses believe to be “marketable,” we want to see excellence in writing, no matter the form it takes. Find out more about eligibility!

Since 2000, the SFWP Literary Awards Program has recognized excellence in writing, judged by National Book Critics Circle Award-winner and NBA finalist Jayne Anne Phillips, two-time NEA fellow and Hemingway Award finalist Richard Currey, Granta “best novelist under 40″ and Guggenheim fellow Chris Offutt, popular essayist Ayun Halliday, Pulitzer prize-winner Robert Olen Butler, NPR’s “Voice of Books” Alan Cheuse, and the “Queen of the Zines,” Pagan Kennedy. In 2013, the judges are David Morrell and Lee Gutkind. (And, no, you do not have to live in Santa Fe. The program is open to everyone, everywhere in the world.)

Colony Collapse Press 2013 Novella Prize

Colony Collapse Press will award a prize of $300, publication, and 20 complimentary copies for the best novella, as judged by our editorial board.
Deadline: July 31, 2013.
Length: 15,000 words minimum and 50,000 words maximum per each individual submission. These pages must comprise a single work of fiction or novella-length narrative nonfiction.
Entry fee: $10 per manuscript. This fee is nonrefundable and must be paid by credit card from within the online submission manager.
Multiple submissions are permissible. Each additional entry requires its own separate entry fee.
Portions of the manuscript may have been previously published, but the manuscript, as a whole must be unpublished and must be available for exclusive book-length publication by Colony Collapse Press. Previously self-published works are not eligible. For excerpts published individually in journals or magazines, the writer must hold copyright. Include an acknowledgments page listing previous publication of included work, if applicable.
All submissions will be considered for publication. All themes and/or subject matters are eligible. All rights revert to the writer upon publication.
Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but if the manuscript is published/accepted by another press while under consideration, the author must promptly withdraw the entry.
Book bundle: As a special deal to contest entrants, Colony Collapse Press offers any published book for an additional $6. Gemini Magazine Flash Fiction Contest

We are pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Gemini Magazine Flash Fiction Contest.
GRAND PRIZE: $1,000. Second place wins $100 and four honorable mentions each receive $25. All six finalists will be published online in the October 2013 issue of Gemini.
Maximum length: 1,000 words. Deadline: August 31, 2013. Open to ANY subject, style or genre. Both new and established writers are welcome.
ENTRY FEE: just $4 ($3 for each additional flash). Enter by email or snail mail. 
Kudos to previous fiction contest winners: Beverly Akerman, who won our first Flash Fiction Contest in 2009 for “Pie,” has received multiple awards (the David Adams Prize, the CBC-Scotiabank Giller Prize “Readers’ Choice Top 10” and others) for her collection, “The Meaning of Children.” The collection includes “Pie” and 13 other stories.
Seamus Scanlon’s “As Close as You’ll Ever Be” was named one of the best short story collections of 2012 by Library Journal. Scanlon won our 2011 Short Story Prize for “My Beautiful, Brash, Beastly Belfast,” which is part of the collection.

Submissions are now being accepted for Capital Repertory Theatre’s NEXT ACT! NEW PLAY SUMMIT 2!

 

Next Act! is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s commitment to the development of new work, and is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s recent and future growth explosion in the fields of research and technology. The summit will directly reflect the theatre’s mission, “to create meaningful theatre generated from an authentic link to the community.” Next Act! takes place November 2nd thru 4th, 2013 and will feature readings of two never-before produced plays, one musical and special events throughout the weekend.Capital Rep is particularly interested in scripts that showcase world events as they impact the individual and society, highlighting the common threads that bind the American culture together in a world that is defined more and more by diversity. The theatre will give preference to character driven scripts that showcase technology’s impact on humanity. Accepting plays and musicals.
Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse plays welcome.
Comedy and Drama welcome!
(Please do not submit plays about the theatre.)

ELIGIBILITY
Eligible plays can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 7 characters. (Please do not submit works in which actors play multiple roles, unless it is a device used to illuminate generations. Eligible musicals can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 6 characters. Accompaniment must be able to be provided by a pianist for the reading. Scripts that allow creative ways for execution in the intimate atmosphere of Capital Rep’s thrust stage are particularly welcome. (There is no limit on subject matter. Adaptations of literature welcome.) Agent and non-agent submissions accepted.
