Colony Collapse Press 2013 Novella Prize

Colony Collapse Press will award a prize of $300, publication, and 20 complimentary copies for the best novella, as judged by our editorial board.
Deadline: July 31, 2013.
Length: 15,000 words minimum and 50,000 words maximum per each individual submission. These pages must comprise a single work of fiction or novella-length narrative nonfiction.
Entry fee: $10 per manuscript. This fee is nonrefundable and must be paid by credit card from within the online submission manager.
Multiple submissions are permissible. Each additional entry requires its own separate entry fee.
Portions of the manuscript may have been previously published, but the manuscript, as a whole must be unpublished and must be available for exclusive book-length publication by Colony Collapse Press. Previously self-published works are not eligible. For excerpts published individually in journals or magazines, the writer must hold copyright. Include an acknowledgments page listing previous publication of included work, if applicable.
All submissions will be considered for publication. All themes and/or subject matters are eligible. All rights revert to the writer upon publication.
Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but if the manuscript is published/accepted by another press while under consideration, the author must promptly withdraw the entry.
Book bundle: As a special deal to contest entrants, Colony Collapse Press offers any published book for an additional $6. For $16 total, submit to the contest and choose from a copy of the winning novella from the contest, or either of our two previously published books, Michael Sheehan’s Proposals for the Recovery of the Apparently Drowned, or Kara Weiss’s Late Lights.

Gemini Magazine Flash Fiction Contest

We are pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Gemini Magazine Flash Fiction Contest.
GRAND PRIZE: $1,000. Second place wins $100 and four honorable mentions each receive $25. All six finalists will be published online in the October 2013 issue of Gemini.
Maximum length: 1,000 words. Deadline: August 31, 2013. Open to ANY subject, style or genre. Both new and established writers are welcome.
ENTRY FEE: just $4 ($3 for each additional flash). Enter by email or snail mail. 
Kudos to previous fiction contest winners: Beverly Akerman, who won our first Flash Fiction Contest in 2009 for “Pie,” has received multiple awards (the David Adams Prize, the CBC-Scotiabank Giller Prize “Readers’ Choice Top 10” and others) for her collection, “The Meaning of Children.” The collection includes “Pie” and 13 other stories.
Seamus Scanlon’s “As Close as You’ll Ever Be” was named one of the best short story collections of 2012 by Library Journal. Scanlon won our 2011 Short Story Prize for “My Beautiful, Brash, Beastly Belfast,” which is part of the collection.

Submissions are now being accepted for Capital Repertory Theatre’s NEXT ACT! NEW PLAY SUMMIT 2!

 

Next Act! is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s commitment to the development of new work, and is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s recent and future growth explosion in the fields of research and technology. The summit will directly reflect the theatre’s mission, “to create meaningful theatre generated from an authentic link to the community.” Next Act! takes place November 2nd thru 4th, 2013 and will feature readings of two never-before produced plays, one musical and special events throughout the weekend.Capital Rep is particularly interested in scripts that showcase world events as they impact the individual and society, highlighting the common threads that bind the American culture together in a world that is defined more and more by diversity. The theatre will give preference to character driven scripts that showcase technology’s impact on humanity. Accepting plays and musicals.
Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse plays welcome.
Comedy and Drama welcome!
(Please do not submit plays about the theatre.)

ELIGIBILITY
Eligible plays can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 7 characters. (Please do not submit works in which actors play multiple roles, unless it is a device used to illuminate generations. Eligible musicals can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 6 characters. Accompaniment must be able to be provided by a pianist for the reading. Scripts that allow creative ways for execution in the intimate atmosphere of Capital Rep’s thrust stage are particularly welcome. (There is no limit on subject matter. Adaptations of literature welcome.) Agent and non-agent submissions accepted.

Plays: Playwrights should submit a synopsis, character descriptions and the first 10 pages of their play with a photo/resume and bio. $10,000 Walton Sustainability Solutions Best Creative Nonfiction Essay Award

Creative Nonfiction and Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability are looking for remarkable true stories that illuminate and present the human side of environmental, economic, ethical, and/or social challenges related to the state of the planet and our future.

We welcome personal essays or stories about extraordinary individuals or communities, and stories about innovative solutions to sustainability. We seek essays on topics that range from global to local, from “big” (e.g., Resilience after natural disasters; New technology solutions vs. common sense; Energy harvesting) to “small” (e.g., Personal decisions about consumption; Reuse, recycle, up-cycle, bicycle?; Green, clean—what does it mean?; What can we learn from past generations?). Whatever the subject, we want to hear about it in an essay that blends facts and research with narrative—employing scenes, descriptions, etc.

Your essay can channel Henry David Thoreau or Henry Ford, Rachel Carson or (a literary) Rush Limbaugh; but all essays must tell true stories and be factual and scientifically accurate (we will fact-check, so please keep your documentation).

All essays submitted will be considered for publication in a special “Human Face of Sustainability” issue of Creative Nonfiction magazine. One writer will be awarded the $10,000 Walton Sustainability Solutions Best Creative Nonfiction Essay Award.

The prize recipient will be invited to a special launch event hosted by Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability.

Guidelines: Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,000 words. There is a $20 reading fee (or send a reading fee of $25 to include a 4-issue subscription to Creative Nonfiction—U.S. submitters only); multiple entries are welcome ($20/essay) as are entries from outside the United States (though due to shipping costs we cannot offer the subscription deal).

On The Premises Short Story Contest (no fee)

If you’d like to try getting paid for your fiction, why not consider us? Since 2006, On The Premises magazine has aimed to promote newer and/or relatively unknown writers who can write creative, compelling stories told in effective, uncluttered, and evocative prose. We’ve never charged a reading fee or publication fee, and we pay between $40 and $180 for short stories that fit each issue’s broad story premise. We publish stories in nearly every genre (literary/realist, mystery, light/dark fantasy, light/hard sci-fi, slipstream) aimed at adult readers (no children’s fiction).

The premise of our 20th contest is “Inner Workings”. One or more characters must examine the inner workings of something important to the story. The “something” can be a physical object, a person’s mindset, a relationship, an idea…anything so long as the concept of “inner workings” can be applied to it literally or metaphorically.

Any genre except children’s fiction, exploitative sex, or over-the-top gross-out horror is fine. We will not accept parodies of another author’s specific fictional characters or world(s). No exceptions!

The P.L. Titus Scholarship is an annual award given to a student if the student wins our E.M. Koeppel Short Fiction Contest. The winner, if a student, will receive the $500 P.L. Titus Scholarship plus the full $1,100 prize money. If the student is an editor’s choice recipient, he or she will receive a $50 scholarship plus the editors’ choice prize money. Proof of college, university, or school enrollment at the time the student submitted the story is required for the student to be eligible for this award.

The Drunk Monkeys Summer 2013 Short Fiction Contest is here!

We will consider short fiction and flash fiction pieces. Nothing shorter than 400 words or longer than 2,000.

The theme of the contest is, appropriately enough, “SUMMER”. You can work the theme into the story in any way you choose, but it must be present.
Entries will be accepted from April 1, 2013 to June 7, 2013.

First prize will win $50 in cash money and publication in an upcoming edition of our eBook anthology series.
Second and Third prize winners will be published on the website.

Love + Lust – Open Call for Writing – Juried Book Competition

Open to Interpretation brings together photographers and writers in an exciting and innovative book project that has never been done before. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. 
 
Announcing Love + Lust

 

The photographers sent us their images and interpretations of Love + Lust. Now it’s the writers turn to use the images to inspire your words. Poems and stories may include a literal description of the work, personal memories, metaphorical associations, or your mood inspired by the image.

“A CELEBRATION OF WORDS” IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

Final day of Ojai WordFest needs helpers at Libbey Bowl event

 
(Ventura, CA – April 1, 2013) Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of positions for “A Celebration of Words,” the daylong finale of Ojai WordFest on Saturday, April 13. Scheduled festivities will include stage readings and performances by authors, poets, and songwriters. There will be a create workshop for children, a poetry panel discussion and a special presentation of “I Sing Walt Whitman!” by actor/playwright John Slade.
A “Book Fair at the Bowl” will be held on the lawn above the bowl featuring authors and poets with books and other literary items for sale. The event is free to the public and will run from 10 am to 5 pm.
There are several ways to assist:

Stage Manager: Will work with the authors, poets and emcee to bring people to the staging area, escort on stage and monitor the sound system. We would like one person but could split morning and afternoon duties.

Move in or Move out: Starting at 8 AM, we need people to direct the exhibitors where to unload their cars and where to set up their tables. Starting at 4 PM, we need a second shift to direct traffic at the Bowl’s loading dock as they pack up and move out.

Welcomers: We will position two people to stand near the entrance arch and welcomes people to the event, answers questions, and hands out programs. There will be a third person at the top of the bowl to direct people and oversee water distribution. These will go in two-hour shifts.

Table Sitters: Several of our authors are both speaking and exhibiting. We need people to sit at their exhibit table while they are reading on stage.

Help with Anything: There will always be places where we need a person to sit or direct people, help exhibitors find their tables, etc. Good-natured people required to move from one position to another.
