We advise you to send a story query, not a finished article, for a report-driven story rather than an opinion piece. Your query should focus on regional issues, individuals, resources or events, to name a few. We need a compelling reason to assign an article: a specific angle, or news that makes the subject fresh. As a general guideline, a cover story is in excess of 1,600 words, a news feature around 1,100, creative writing around 800, column 600, and a brief 100-300. There must be a regional angle. Northword covers the area between Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands in the west, Jasper in the east, and Dease Lake in the north. And yes, this is in Canada.

Ohio Magazine publishes stories that celebrate Ohio – its people, its rich culture and heritage, and especially its travel spots. Feature stories in Ohio Magazine should meet all the above criteria. Typically, our feature well contains stories about interesting Ohioans, top travel destinations, Ohio’s arts and cultural institutions, as well as trend pieces and service pieces that provide readers with a statewide set of options on a particular topic. All features should have the potential for wonderful art to accompany it, so the story has a strong visual impact on our readers. Profile pieces typically focus on an individual who can claim an impact – large or small – on the entire state, or whose actions would be of interest to our statewide audience. Trend stories can vary greatly, ranging from home decorating, gardening and food to arts and entertainment. But all must be proven emerging trends in our back yard. Travel pieces highly welcomed. Pays up to $1,200 per articles up to 3,000 words.
