Entry fee: $13.59 per paper ($20 for up to three pieces); except for poetry, where up to three submissions are accepted for $13.59.
Best Short Story ($1,000)
Best Poem ($1,000)
Best Essay ($1,000)
The jury, comprising highly-respected authors Sibelan Forrester, Jelena Lengold and John K. Cox, has the right to give a special prize (US$ 500 for entry in each category).
Ten finalists in each category will be published in the first issue of the literary magazine.
All published works will be financially compensated and finalists will be provided with one copy of the printed edition of the Hourglass Literary Magazine.
Hourglass Literary Magazine is an annual and bilingual magazine published in print and digital form in English, as well as the languages of the region (BCMS).
The international competition is open to all authors writing in English or any of the BCMS languages. No theme, genre limitations or boundaries. Work must be original and unpublished. One author can compete in all categories, for all three awards respectively. Limited multiple submissions are allowed (as well as simultaneous submissions).
We want to achieve an intercultural mélange, which is first and foremost literary. We aim to pose a series of questions on the pages of Hourglass Literary Magazine, such as: What are poetics and the formal solutions and (pre)dominant themes for authors who write in English? What remained of post-modernism, textual acrobatics and semantic gymnastics (John Barth, Robert Coover, Ronald Sukenick, etc.)? “Return to tradition”? How does the “Beat” generation echo in the work of contemporary writers? Where do we write from? What do we write about when we write about love?
