30 Below Contest—2017

NARRATIVE INVITES all writers, poets, visual artists, photographers, performers, and filmmakers between eighteen and thirty years old to send us their best work. We’re looking for the traditional and the innovative, the true and the imaginary. We’re looking to encourage and promote the best young authors and artists working today.
Awards: First Prize is $1,500, Second Prize is $750, Third Prize is $300, and ten finalists will receive $100 each. The prizewinners and finalists will be announced in Narrative.
All N30B entries are eligible for the $4,000 Narrative Prize for 2018 and for acceptance as a Story of the Week or Poem of the Week.
We accept submissions in the following media:
Written: Works of prose and of poetry, including short stories, all poetic forms, novel excerpts, essays, memoirs, and excerpts from book-length nonfiction. Prose submissions must not exceed 15,000 words. Each poetry submission may contain up to five poems. The poems should all be contained in a single file. All submissions should be double-spaced, with 12-point type, at least one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages. Please provide your name, address, telephone number, and email address at the top of the first page. Submit your document as a .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .rtf file. You may enter as many times as you wish, but we encourage you to be selective and to send your best work. All entries will be considered for publication.
Drawn: Graphic novel excerpts and comics of no more than thirty pages, in .pdf format. Please include your full name in the title of the file name.
Photographed: Photo essays of between five and twenty images, previously unpublished (including on sites like Flickr, your personal website, stock photography sites, etc.). Images should be submitted in a low-resolution .pdf or .jpg format; however, upon acceptance, images need to be provided with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, in a .tif, .jpg, or raw format that can be reproduced at 1,024 pixels wide. Captions or text should be included, either with the file containing the images or as a separate document in a .doc or .pdf format, with numbered captions corresponding to the similarly numbered photographs. Please provide your name, address, telephone number, and email address on the first page of the essay.
Spoken: Original works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in audio theater, including performance, radio journalism, and stories and poems read aloud. Submissions may run up to ten minutes, in .mp3 format, with a bit rate of at least 128 kbit/s. Please include your full name in the title of the file name.
Filmed: Short films and documentaries of up to fifteen minutes. Submissions must be in .mp4 or .mov format. Please include your full name in the title of the file name.
Timing: Entries will be accepted through November 19, 2017, at midnight, Pacific standard time.
Entry fee: There is a $26 fee for each entry. And with your entry, you’ll receive three months of complimentary access to Narrative Backstage.
Judging: The contest will be judged by the editors of the magazine. Winners and finalists will be announced to the public by December 19, 2017. All writers who enter will be notified by email of the judges’ decisions, which will be final. The judges reserve the option to declare ties and to designate and award only as many winners and/or finalists as are appropriate to the quality of contest entries and of work represented in the magazine.
Entries must be previously unpublished, though we do accept works that have appeared in college publications. Entries cannot have been the winner, finalist, or honorable mention in another contest. We accept online entries only. We do accept simultaneous submissions, but if your entry is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible (and accept our congratulations!).

The Radiant Peace Education Awards

Fall 2016 (Twenty-sixth Annual)

All students in grades 1-8 — from public and private schools, home schools, youth and after-school groups, and abroad — are welcome to enter the Fall 2016 national program of The Radiant Peace Education Awards®! The Radiant Peace Education Awards program gives students an opportunity to express themselves about Radiant Peace in their own lives in essays, art, videos and projects.

This year’s entries must be postmarked by December 7, 2016, with winners being announced in January 2017. All participants receive beautiful iron-on Radiant Peace Patches, and outstanding entries will also receive certificates and cash awards! Winner’s classrooms will also receive cash awards. In addition, many of the most creative or exceptional entries will be displayed in The International Museum of Radiant Peace.

2016 HOSPITAL DRIVE DECISIONS CONTEST

Hospital Drive, the literature, arts, and humanities magazine of the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine, is awarding prizes of $500 each in the categories of poetry, prose, and visual art. Submissions should relate in some way to the theme of “Decisions” in the context of healthcare (wellness, illness, caregiving, etc.) We welcome submissions nationwide from the public as well as healthcare professionals and educators. $5 ENTRY FEE.

If you feel you believe you are a good writer whose voice should be heard all over the world, send us your best short fiction, essay or poem.

DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 – $3000 in Awards

The CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is given to a North American photographer pursuing work of creative or social importance. While there are other sources for grants and fellowships in photography, the chance to have the editorial, design, production, and marketing support to realize a body of work in print is rare: The prize’s focus is on creating an opportunity for photographers who are engaged in the creation of a continued, active, and vital body of work to publish a first book. Winners of the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography receive a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in a website devoted to presenting the work of the prizewinners. The winner also receives a solo exhibit; the photographs are then placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts in Duke University’s Rubenstein Library. Submissions accepted June 15 through September 15, 2016.

Enter our juried competition for digital art and photography. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work.
All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.
The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44×60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper
(approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery.
The exhibit will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24×36 inches
($150-$200 in value) to be included in the winners’ exhibits and opening.

HEAVY METAL PARTNERS WITH THREADLESS FOR AUGUST 2016 COVER DESIGN

Legendary Magazine Recruits Threadless Artist Community Via Newly Launched Design Challenge!

CHICAGO (April 13, 2016)-Threadless, the global design community best known for their graphic apparel, and Heavy Metal Magazine, the world’s premier illustrated magazine for science fiction, horror, and fantasy, have partnered to host a design challenge. The two brands are asking artists from around the world to create original artwork for the cover of the August 2016 issue of Heavy Metal. Beginning April 13, 2016 artists will have three weeks to submit their designs to be voted on via Threadless.com. Once submissions close, there will be an additional ten days for scoring.
“Heavy Metal Magazine is such a visually iconic publication, and I believe our artist community will have so much to bring to the table,” said Jake Nickell, Threadless founder and CEO. “We’ve printed designs that are aesthetically in line with Heavy Metal’s look and feel, so I’m confident that this challenge will foster some incredible artwork.”
One design from the challenge will be selected to be featured as the August 2016 cover of Heavy Metal. The winning artist will receive $2,000, a $250 Threadless gift certificate, a 10-year subscription to Heavy Metal, and a full set of Lord of Light collection prints. Two runners up will receive $750 cash, a $250 Threadless gift certificate, and a three-year subscription to Heavy Metal.
In addition to scoring from the Threadless community of over 3.6 million users, the challenge will be guest-judged by Heavy Metal Magazine staff members Grant Morrison (Editor-in-Chief), Kevin Eastman (Publisher), Jeff Krelitz (Co-CEO), and Brian Witten (President).

Call for submissions: PRISM international

PRISM international publishes exciting, original, literary material from established and emerging writers in Canada and around the world. We accept submissions year-round. Due to the high volume of submissions we receive each month, reply times range between 2 to 6 months, depending on the time of year.

A good deal of our content is generated from our annual Fiction, Poetry and Creative Non-Fiction Contests. Please visit our contest page for more details.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Please submit to only one genre at a time, and await a reply before submitting
again. See the particular guidelines for each genre below.

Guidelines for Prose (Short Fiction, Literary Non-Fiction, Drama)

  • Please submit only one piece at a time, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1000 words), in which case you can submit up to three pieces in a single document. While we accept submissions of up to 25 pages (6,250 words), it is generally easier to place shorter work. If you’re going to write long, it should really blow our socks off.
  • Include in your cover letter your full contact information (including email address) and a short bio. Please also specify the genre you are submitting.
  • Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, and paginated. No wacky fonts, please.
  • Non-fiction pieces should be creative, exploratory, or experimental in tone. We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or journalistic non-fiction.
  • We welcome translations into English. Such works must be undertaken with the permission of the original author. Please include a copy of the original work with your submission.
  • We strongly prefer online submissions, and to reply to mailed submissions via email. Please only include a SASE if you cannot be reached via email. And remember: we’re in Canada – unless you are too, your stamps don’t work here.
  • We do not accept email submissions. Online submissions must be submitted through Submittable, and come with a $3 submission fee.

Guidelines for Cover Art

  • We accept photography only, submitted by email in high resolution PDF, TIF or PNG files. We pay $300 CAD for the cover of one issue, along with three copies of that issue. An image of the cover will also appear on our website, the British Columbia Association of Magazine Publishers website, and the affiliated websites of Magazines Canada.
  • Please send photography submissions to Jen Macdonald, Executive Editor, Circulation at circulation@prismmagazine.ca.

Reasonable exceptions to our guidelines will be made for submissions from
writers in prison.

Please note: PRISM does not accept submissions from current and incoming
students and faculty of the University of British Columbia’s Creative Writing
Program (this includes the UBC Optional-Residency MFA Program). Work submitted by incoming students prior to their acceptance to the UBC Creative Writing Program, if still under consideration, must be withdrawn. In order to submit, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC Creative Writing Program course during the previous two years.

Please note that it is also our policy not to publish the same writer more than once within a twelve-month period.

Yellow Chair Review is a literary journal accepting submissions of poetry, prose and art.  Issues release quarterly.   We seek to act as a safe space for both readers and writers from marginalized groups. We are particularly interested to see submissions from POC and the LGBTQ community.

These same standards and practices extend into our Press.

Submission Guidelines:

Deadlines:  Submittable will always have our current deadlines posted. 

Written Work:

  • Include a brief (50 words or so) 3rd person Bio.  Include a link to your website!
  • Please do not send a long explanation of your work.  Let your work speak for itself.
  • Poetry – 5 poems maximum and no longer than 10 pages
  • Send all work in ONE FILE.  Do not send multiple submissions in the same category or multiple files.
  • Prose – Flash Fiction or Non-Fiction only.  1000 words or less and up to 2 pieces
  • We will also consider Found Poems, Ekphrasis Poems (so long as you have permission to include the art with it) and Erasure Poems.
  • No previously published work.
  • Simultaneous Submissions accepted.  Please notify ASAP if your work is accepted elsewhere
  • If submitting to an Issue expect a response within 48 hours.

Art:

  • Please submit your stick figures, paintings, illustrations, drawings, digital media, photography, or anything not listed here that could be considered art.
  • You may submit up to 5 pieces.
  • Submit a bio and the medium the work is in.
  • Artwork should be high-resolution digital copies.
  • Images of your artwork must be attached in jpeg, png, or tiff format.
  • All submitted artwork will automatically be considered for the cover art of that issue.
  • If submitting to an Issue expect a response within 48 hours.

By submitting the writer/artist acknowledges:

  • Work must be final and checked for grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Minor grammatical and spelling edits may be needed.  If they are you will be notified.
  • Yellow Chair is currently a non-paying market.
  • Publication is currently online only via issuu.com or wordpress.com.  Your work may also appear as a feature on Twitter and on Facebook.
  • Yellow Chair requires first North American serial publishing rights, after publication all rights revert back to author.  All accepted work will remain archived online.
  • Accepted work may appear in an annual print anthology.  If your work is chosen for this anthology you’ll be notified.  We cannot provide contributor copies at this time but hope to change that in the future.
  • Yellow Chair asks that any reprints give first publication credit.
