2016 Human Relations Indie Book Awards Judging Guidelines

The purpose of the Human Relations Indie Book Awards is to recognize indie authors who have written books with a human relations focus related to various interactions among people in different settings such as work, organizations, school, home, family or in personal lives. Book entries for the 2016 Human Relations Indie Book Awards should be published between 2010 and 2016 and must be received in print version (no ebooks accepted) and written for an English speaking audience.Books can be self-published, independently published or have a creative or scholarly writing approach from smaller publishing companies or presses where the author had a voice in the publishing process.

Each contest category (depending on the number of entries) will recognize Gold, Silver and Bronze Winners and Honorable Mention (s) may also be given to recognize honorable writing in the area of human relations. All book entries will also be considered for Director’s Choice awards who exhibit outstanding writing in the area of Human Relations and the selected Director’s Choice winners will receive the following: a book tweeting package provided by BookTweeters.com, a social media press release provided by Online PR Media and a cinematic trailer provided by International Book Promotion.

Each author should complete a book submission form with three copies of the book and the entry fee for each entry. Authors may enter more than one book category, but will need to mark the additional categories on the book submission form and add the additional entry fee for each category.  Entry fees should be paid in check in U.S. dollars or sent with a U.S. postal service money order. No books will be returned after the contest and will be donated to libraries, charities, educational programs or those in need.  Entry fees start at $65.00 for the first category ($55.00 for the first category if entry is postmarked by October 1, 2016), $45.00 for the second category and $35.00 for the third category.

2016 Human Relations Indie Book Awards final deadline for entry is November 7, 2016, but earlier entries are encouraged to allow more time for judging the book entries. Winners will be announced on or before Dec. 15, 2016.

Judges names will not be posted due to confidentiality. Books will be judged on book content, book organization, book presentation and the human relations message conveyed in the book. Judges decisions are final.

A broad range of book categories will provide authors the opportunity to enter one or more categories that may be related to the book’s human relations content. There are over 30 categories that include topics related to human relations issues, children’s books with a human relations focus, poetry human relations books and general human relations categories.

Shelf Unbound Best Indie/Self-Published Book Competition

Shelf Unbound book review magazine announces the Shelf Unbound Best Indie/Self-Published Book Competition. Any independently published book in any genre is eligible for entry. Entry fee is $50 per book. The winning entry will be selected by the editors of Shelf Unbound magazine.

“Independently Published” books include self-published books and e-books (such as those published through CreateSpace, Lulu.com, iUniverse, etc.) and/or books and e-books published through small presses releasing less than five titles per year. Books entered in last year’s competition are eligible for re-submission in this year’s competition. There is no limit to the number of books an individual can enter; each book is a separate entry. The competition is open to authors worldwide; books must be in English. Any length book is eligible. The competition also includes the Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book, open to fiction and non-fiction sports-related books, in honor of Pete Delohery, author of the novel Lamb to the Slaughter.

The annual Autumn House Press Contests award publication of full-length manuscripts in PoetryFiction, and Nonfiction. Send us your full-length manuscripts of poetry (50-80 pages), fiction (200-300 pages), and nonfiction (200-300 pages)! Narrative Prize

THE $4,000 NARRATIVE PRIZE is awarded annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, one-act play, graphic story, or work of literary nonfiction published by a new or emerging writer in Narrative.

The deadline for entries for each year’s award is June 15.The winner is announced each September, and the prize is awarded in October. The award, citing the winner’s name and the title and genre of the winning piece, is widely publicized, and each winner is cited in an ongoing listing in Narrative. The prize will be given to the best work published each year in Narrative by a new or emerging writer, as judged by the magazine’s editors. In some years, the prize may be divided between winners, when more than one work merits the award.

How to Send Us Your Work: We accept submissions only through our electronic submission system. We do not accept submissions through postal services or email. You may send us manuscripts for the following submission categories: General Submissions, Story of the Week, Readers’ Narrative, or a specific Contest. Your manuscript must be in one of the following file forms: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .pdf, .txt, .odf, .mp3, .mp4, .mov, and .flv.

Formatting Your Manuscript: All manuscripts should be in 12-point type, with at least one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages. Fiction and nonfiction should be double-spaced. Poetry should be single-spaced. The author’s name, address, telephone number, and email address should be typed at the top of the first page. Contributors are asked to include a brief biographical note with their submissions.

Timing: Submissions may be sent to us at any time, year-round.

Simultaneous Submissions: We accept multiple submissions, since we feel that it’s unreasonable to expect writers to give a magazine an exclusive look at a work unless the magazine can respond within two to three weeks. We want writers to have every possible opportunity for success, so we’re willing to risk losing a story we want when someone at another magazine may have done their reading before we have, and in that case we’ll be sorry to lose the piece but happy for the writer.

Response Time: Our response time varies from four to twelve weeks, with the slowest times usually being August/September and December/January.

Submission Fees: Narrative is a nonprofit organization with the ambition of encouraging good literary work. We do not charge readers for the magazine. However, for unsolicited submissions, we do charge a nominal fee, which helps cover the basic administrative costs related to receiving, reading, and responding to submissions. Also, a portion of the reading fee helps fund our annual Narrative Prize. Our desire is to connect readers and writers, and we strongly encourage anyone interested in submitting work to read the magazine before submitting. You may read the magazine for free. If you enjoy reading it and wish to submit, we hope you will feel that the reading fee, which is lower than most literary magazine subscription fees, is more than justified by the quality of the work the magazine offers. We are strongly committed to publishing debut and emerging writers, and those writers account for a third of the three to four hundred works we publish each year.

Open Reading Periods: During the first two weeks of April, we do not require a reading fee for general submissions made specifically to the Open Reading category via our submissions page. However, manuscripts submitted during this period are not eligible for the Narrative Prize.

Payment to Authors: Narrative is strongly committed to supporting our authors’ work. Our current rates for work are as follows:

—$150 for a Story of the Week, with $400 each for the annual Top Five Stories of the Week.
—$150 to $350 for 500 to 2,000 word manuscripts.
—$350 to $1,000 for 2,000 to 15,000 word manuscripts.
—Rates for book-length works vary, depending on the length and nature of the work.
—$50 minimum for each accepted poem and audio piece. ($25 for poetry reprints.)
—$200 each for the annual Top Five Poems of the Week.
—$100 for Readers’ Narratives.

All submissions with a reading fee, from new or emerging writers, are eligible for the $4,000 Narrative Prize, awarded annually.

$4,000 Narrative Prize: The Narrative Prize is awarded annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, or work of literary nonfiction published by a new or emerging writer in Narrative. The deadline for entries for each year’s award is June 15. The winner is announced each September, and the prize is awarded in October. The winner is widely publicized and is cited in an ongoing listing in Narrative. The prize is judged by the magazine’s editors and, in some years, may be divided between winners, when more than one work merits the award.

Word Count Guidelines:

SHORT SHORT STORY manuscripts must be between two and five pages in length, and no less than 500 and no more than 2,000 words.

MANUSCRIPTS OF 2,000 to 15,000 WORDS can include short stories, essays, one-act plays, and other complete short works of nonfiction, and excerpts from longer works of fiction and nonfiction.

NOVELLAS and other long works that are less than book length may run between 15,000 and 40,000 words. For works of this length, please submit the first 15,000 words with a synposis. (Based on our reading of the first 15,000 words, we will ask to see the complete manuscript if we think the work is suitable for Narrative.)

SERIALIZATION OF BOOK-LENGTH WORKS. For consideration for serialization, please send the first chapter and a one-page synopsis of the book. (Based on our reading of the first chapter and synopsis, we will ask to see the complete book manuscript if we think the book is suitable for serialization inNarrative. POETRY submissions may contain up to five poems. The poems should be contained in a single file. Your submission should give a strong sense of your style and range. We accept submissions of all poetic forms and genres but do not accept translations.

ONE-ACT PLAYS: We are particularly interested in finding dramas whose impact can be experienced as much on the page as in production. We are open to plays that have been previously published but are out of print, to plays that have been produced, and to ones that have never been produced or published. Length can run up to 15,000 words.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD AUDIO PROSE submissions may be fiction or nonfiction but should take a storytelling form. Audio prose submissions must be in MP3 format and may be up to ten minutes long.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD AUDIO POETRY submissions must be in MP3 format and may be up to ten minutes long.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD VIDEO submissions may be short films and documentaries of up to 15 minutes. Submissions must be in .mp4 or .mov format.

Deadline June 30: North Street Book Prize for Self-Published Books

The deadline is June 30, 2016 for our second annual North Street Book Prize for self-published books. Three top winners will receive $1,500 each, plus a credit towards the high-quality publishing services at BookBaby, free advertising in the Winning Writers newsletter, and expert marketing advice from Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The Frugal Book Promoter. $6,000 will be awarded in all, with free gifts for everyone who enters.

THE PAZ PRIZE FOR POETRY 2016-2018

The Miami Book Fair established The Paz Prize for Poetry in partnership with The National Poetry Series in Spring 2012.

The award recognizes a previously unpublished poetry book written in Spanish by a poet residing in the U.S. The winning book will be published in a bilingual edition by Akashic Press, and its author will receive a $2,000 cash prize. Achy Obejas, a writer cemebrated for her work across various genres will serve as judge.

The second winner of The Paz Prize for Poetry is Carlos Pintado, for his collectionNueve Monedas/Nine Coins, chosen by judge Richard Blanco.

“The stories of America’s diverse cultural landscape don’t come in just one language or one color. The Paz Prize recognizes this,” said Blanco. “This important award bridges understanding through the power of poetry, and honors the value of Spanish-speaking cultures contributing their stories through the arts to the story of the United States.”

The first winner of the winner of the award was Dinapiera Di Donato for her collection, Colaterales, chosen by the prize’s inaugural judge, Victor Hernandez Cruz.

Guidelines
Miami Book Fair will award one prize annually for the publication of a previously unpublished book of poetry originally written in Spanish by an American resident. The prize will recognize book-length manuscripts of poetry written in Spanish. Translations, works of literary criticism and scholarly texts do not qualify.

The winner will be selected by an esteemed Spanish-speaking poet. The chosen book will be translated into English by an experienced translator, and will be published in a bilingual edition. The Spanish Prize will be administered through The National Poetry Series.

1) A single-spaced copy of the manuscript. All manuscripts must be previously unpublished, although some or all of the individual poems may have appeared in periodicals. Chapbooks, small groups of poems, and books previously self-published are not eligible. Manuscript length is not limited. However, a length of approximately 48 pages is suggested. All manuscripts should be paginated and typed on one side of the page only.

2) Two cover sheets, both including the title of the manuscript, author’s name, address, email, and phone number, along with a brief description of the work and biography of the author (200 words).

We regret that manuscripts cannot be returned. There will be no additions, deletions, or substitutions once a manuscript is submitted. Entrants should inform The National Poetry Series immediately if the manuscript is selected for publication elsewhere.

Finalists for the award will be notified in late July, and the winner will be announced in September. Information relating to the competition will be available atwww.nationalpoetryseries.com and www.flcenterlitarts.com.

The winning poet will be given a chance to make final changes prior to publication.

ROLL OF THUNDER PUBLISHING CONTEST

The Contest is open to people of color (or those who self-identify as other than white) who are residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories and possessions, 18 years of age or older at time of entry and who have not had any works of fiction published in any medium prior to entering the Contest.

In 1974, the Council on Interracial Books sponsored a writing contest seeking out diverse voices. Mildred D. Taylor was the winner of the African-American segment for the manuscript that becameSong of the Trees (Dial, 1975), her first book. It introduced the Logan family and was followed byRoll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (1976), which won the Newbery Medal.

The submission must be in English, between 25,000-75,000 words and must not have been previously published in any medium. The confirmed winner will receive a book publishing contract for the publication of a novel for ages 8-14 by Penguin Random House LLC, with an advance of $35,000, plus royalties.

The CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is given to a North American photographer pursuing work of creative or social importance. While there are other sources for grants and fellowships in photography, the chance to have the editorial, design, production, and marketing support to realize a body of work in print is rare: The prize’s focus is on creating an opportunity for photographers who are engaged in the creation of a continued, active, and vital body of work to publish a first book. Winners of the CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography receive a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in a website devoted to presenting the work of the prizewinners. The winner also receives a solo exhibit; the photographs are then placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts in Duke University’s Rubenstein Library. CHARLOTTE MEW CHAPBOOK CONTEST

Headmistress Press, publisher of poetry books by lesbians, Lesbian Poet Trading Cards, and Lavender Review, is proud to announce our second annual Charlotte Mew Chapbook Contest.

Our first-prize winner will be selected by Ellen Bass and will receive a $250 honorarium plus 20 copies of the winning book. Headmistress Press will also announce finalists, and may choose to publish other books from among the submitted manuscripts.

Headmistress authors receive ten copies of their book and discounts on all further purchases. At your request, the mistresses of Headmistress Press will provide feedback on your manuscript.

We will be accepting submissions from May 4 to July 4, 2016 and will announce a winner in the fall. Although we do charge a reading fee, we have always had a sliding scale, and no one will be turned away for lack of entrance fee.

Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction Winner: $60,000; Finalists: $5,000

Prize Guidelines

A prize of $60,000 will be awarded to a literary nonfiction book published between September 18, 2015 and September 30, 2016 that, in the opinion of the jury, is the year’s best book of nonfiction. Literary nonfiction includes, among other forms, works of personal or journalistic essays, memoirs, commentary, criticism both social and political, history, and biography. Finalist works will demonstrate a distinctive voice, as well as a persuasive and compelling command of tone, narrative, style, and technique. The overall effect of such writing should provide the general reader with an informed, unique perspective on the issue at hand. The jurors will shortlist between three and five titles. Prizes of $5,000 will be awarded to each of the finalists.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Titles must be published in Canada between September 18, 2015 and September 30, 2016. Books that are not yet in final published form by the final deadline of July 27 may be submitted as bound galleys.
  • Books must be English-language, first-edition trade books published by a Canadian press, written by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Previous publication in another country does not disqualify a book.
  • Translations from other languages into English are eligible and will be considered in the year in which the English translation is published. In the event of a translation winning the prize, the prize money will be divided as follows: $45,000 to the author, $15,000 to the translator.
  • To be eligible publishing houses must have a professional editorial process independent from the authors whose books are submitted for consideration. They must not charge authors for publishing their works.
  • All books must have an ISBN number and be available in Canadian bookstores.
  • Titles may be single-authored or co-authored. Multi-authored collections, anthologies, and conference proceedings are not eligible.
  • Self-published books are not eligible.
  • Ghostwritten books are not eligible.
  • No more than 20% of the manuscript can have previously been published in book form.
  • Books whose author was deceased at the time of publication are not eligible.
  • Publishers should note that the prize is for literary excellence; they should only submit books deemed outstanding in this regard.

The schedule for submissions is tied to publication dates as follows:

Deadline 1: Wednesday, March 23, 2016 
For books published between September 18, 2015 and March 22, 2016

Deadline 2: Wednesday, May 25, 2016 
For books published between March 23, 2016 and May 24, 2016

Publishers are strongly encouraged to submit books prior to the deadlines. Submissions upon release of titles are appreciated. If a publisher, for any reason whatsoever, feels they cannot submit titles in accordance with the above schedule it is requested that they contact the Program Manager to discuss the possibility of an extension.

Number of Submissions

All Canadian-based publishers of original manuscripts may enter two books; companies publishing more than ten eligible nonfiction titles may add one book for every additional ten eligible books (or fraction thereof) on their nonfiction list, up to a maximum of five. See the chart below for reference.

Required Materials

The following must be submitted by the final deadline on July 27, 2016:

  • Five copies of each eligible title in book form; or three bound galleys, with at least two copies of the finished book to be received by the Writers’ Trust upon publication
  • A Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction submission form listing all submitted titles and planned submissions sent with the first shipment of books (do not send multiple copies unless you make changes to your submission plans)
  • Publishers submitting more than two titles must provide a list of all titles published during the calendar year on which that publisher’s eligibility is based. This list should include authors, titles, and dates of publication.
  • Electronic images of the author and book cover suitable for reproduction in print materials – please name each file as follows: “Nonfiction_AuthorLastName_FirstName” and “Nonfiction_AuthorLastName_BookTitle”. Contact the Program Manager for instructions on sending large images.

 

Jury Composition

The finalists of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction are chosen by a three-person jury. Each juror may request an unlimited number of additional titles from a publisher’s list. Such titles are on equal footing with all other submissions, provided that their publishers agree to abide by the conditions laid out in this document. The jury acts independently of the Writers’ Trust and is charged with interpreting the mandate and eligibility criteria of the prize, as well as determining which of the submissions best reflect the prize mandate. In evaluating the writing, literary merit is the sole criteria. The judgment of the jury in selecting the winners, determining eligibility, and interpreting these rules is final.

Announcement of Nominees & Winners

The list of finalist authors will be announced in September 2016 and the award will be presented in November 2016 at an event in Toronto.

Publisher Obligations

If an author is a finalist the publisher will agree to:

  • Supply the Writers’ Trust with 18 additional copies of the shortlisted book for publicity.
  • Affix stickers provided by the Writers’ Trust to all outgoing copies of the current edition of the finalist and winning books and include prize sticker artwork on any subsequent editions.
  • Participate in promotion and publicity efforts undertaken by the Writers’ Trust and stress the importance of this with their authors.

The press was founded in 2012 to offer a publishing opportunity for writers seeking a home for shorter manuscripts.

How It Works

As always, we take great pride in reading every word and giving each manuscript its due attention and thorough consideration. We consider manuscripts of all types, styles, and genres and aren’t looking for a particular aesthetic; we’re wiling to give anything a fair chance. Please send your best fiction, poetry, nonfiction, graphic narrative, or hybrid. Manuscripts should be roughly 35-50 pages, but we’re flexible with this in either direction. THE $4,000 NARRATIVE PRIZE is awarded annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, one-act play, graphic story, or work of literary nonfiction published by a new or emerging writer in Narrative.

The deadline for entries for each year’s award is June 15, 2016.

How to Send Us Your Work: We accept submissions only through our electronic submission system. We do not accept submissions through postal services or email. You may send us manuscripts for the following submission categories: General Submissions, Story of the Week, Readers’ Narrative, or a specific Contest. Your manuscript must be in one of the following file forms: .doc, .docx, .rtf, .pdf, .txt, .odf, .mp3, .mp4, .mov, and .flv.

Formatting Your Manuscript: All manuscripts should be in 12-point type, with at least one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages. Fiction and nonfiction should be double-spaced. Poetry should be single-spaced. The author’s name, address, telephone number, and email address should be typed at the top of the first page. Contributors are asked to include a brief biographical note with their submissions.

Timing: Submissions may be sent to us at any time, year-round.

Simultaneous Submissions: We accept multiple submissions, since we feel that it’s unreasonable to expect writers to give a magazine an exclusive look at a work unless the magazine can respond within two to three weeks. We want writers to have every possible opportunity for success, so we’re willing to risk losing a story we want when someone at another magazine may have done their reading before we have, and in that case we’ll be sorry to lose the piece but happy for the writer.

Response Time: Our response time varies from four to twelve weeks, with the slowest times usually being August/September and December/January.

Submission Fees: Narrative is a nonprofit organization with the ambition of encouraging good literary work. We do not charge readers for the magazine. However, for unsolicited submissions, we do charge a nominal fee, which helps cover the basic administrative costs related to receiving, reading, and responding to submissions. Also, a portion of the reading fee helps fund our annual Narrative Prize. Our desire is to connect readers and writers, and we strongly encourage anyone interested in submitting work to read the magazine before submitting. You may read the magazine for free. If you enjoy reading it and wish to submit, we hope you will feel that the reading fee, which is lower than most literary magazine subscription fees, is more than justified by the quality of the work the magazine offers. We are strongly committed to publishing debut and emerging writers, and those writers account for a third of the three to four hundred works we publish each year.

Open Reading Periods: During the first two weeks of April, we do not require a reading fee for general submissions made specifically to the Open Reading category via our submissions page. However, manuscripts submitted during this period are not eligible for the Narrative Prize.

Payment to Authors: Narrative is strongly committed to supporting our authors’ work. Our current rates for work are as follows:

—$150 for a Story of the Week, with $400 each for the annual Top Five Stories of the Week.
—$150 to $350 for 500 to 2,000 word manuscripts.
—$350 to $1,000 for 2,000 to 15,000 word manuscripts.
—Rates for book-length works vary, depending on the length and nature of the work.
—$50 minimum for each accepted poem and audio piece. ($25 for poetry reprints.)
—$200 each for the annual Top Five Poems of the Week.
—$100 for Readers’ Narratives.

$4,000 Narrative Prize: The Narrative Prize is awarded annually for the best short story, novel excerpt, poem, or work of literary nonfiction published by a new or emerging writer in Narrative. The deadline for entries for each year’s award is June 15. The winner is announced each September, and the prize is awarded in October. The winner is widely publicized and is cited in an ongoing listing in Narrative. The prize is judged by the magazine’s editors and, in some years, may be divided between winners, when more than one work merits the award.

Word Count Guidelines:

SHORT SHORT STORY manuscripts must be between two and five pages in length, and no less than 500 and no more than 2,000 words.

MANUSCRIPTS OF 2,000 to 15,000 WORDS can include short stories, essays, one-act plays, and other complete short works of nonfiction, and excerpts from longer works of fiction and nonfiction.

NOVELLAS and other long works that are less than book length may run between 15,000 and 40,000 words. For works of this length, please submit the first 15,000 words with a synposis. (Based on our reading of the first 15,000 words, we will ask to see the complete manuscript if we think the work is suitable for Narrative.)

SERIALIZATION OF BOOK-LENGTH WORKS. For consideration for serialization, please send the first chapter and a one-page synopsis of the book. POETRY submissions may contain up to five poems. The poems should be contained in a single file. Your submission should give a strong sense of your style and range. We accept submissions of all poetic forms and genres but do not accept translations.

ONE-ACT PLAYS: We are particularly interested in finding dramas whose impact can be experienced as much on the page as in production. We are open to plays that have been previously published but are out of print, to plays that have been produced, and to ones that have never been produced or published. Length can run up to 15,000 words.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD AUDIO PROSE submissions may be fiction or nonfiction but should take a storytelling form. Audio prose submissions must be in MP3 format and may be up to ten minutes long.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD AUDIO POETRY submissions must be in MP3 format and may be up to ten minutes long.

NARRATIVE OUTLOUD VIDEO submissions may be short films and documentaries of up to 15 minutes. Submissions must be in .mp4 or .mov format.

Guidelines:

  • Blind Judging by the Final Judge A.E. Stallings.
  • Initial screening will be done by readers from our contest selection committee—consisting of accomplished and award-winning poets, with members renewed yearly—who will also be reading the entries blind. Thus, judging of the contest will be completely anonymous from start to finish!
  • Entries may not be previously published, but individual poems and chapbook-length sections may have been if the previous publisher gives reprint permission. (Still, more than half of the manuscript may not have been previously published as a collection.)
  • Entries consisting in part or whole of translations into English are also welcome, provided that the original-language poems are in the public domain, or where the original-language poems are still under copyright protection, written permission from the rights holder to translate into English is provided.
  • Simultaneous submissions accepted as long as we’re immediately notified if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Unlimited entries per person—if you wish to enter more than once, then a separate entry fee and submission form must be completed for each entry.
  • All poetry styles are welcome (metrical or free verse).
  • A poetry manuscript of 50 to 120 pages.
  • Acknowledgments may be included in the manuscript but are not required.
  • We prefer online entries, however, paper/snail mail entry is available for those who insist on the traditional submission method.
  • If you’re entering by paper/snail mail, the manuscripts cannot be returned so, do not send us your only copies.
  • For paper/snail mail entries, include an SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) to receive the announcement of the winner.
  • The contests will be judged blind by the final judge, so:
    • Author’s name should only appear on cover page/cover letter and nowhere else.
    • Initial screening will be done by the editors of Able Muse.
      1. The final judge will received anonymized manuscripts (five to ten depending and the number of total entries and their quality).
      2. The final judge will be instructed to disqualify any work that he recognizes. The entry fee the work thus disqualified will be refunded.
    • Include on your cover page ONLY:
      1. the title of your manuscript
      2. a brief bio
      3. the poet’s/writer’s name
      4. address
      5. phone number, and
      6. email address.

The Impress Prize for New Writers

Winner gets a publishing contract, and their book is published with the following year in ebook and paperback forms. Runners up also considered for publishing potential.

Description:

The prize was created to discover and publish new writing talent. Entries are assessed by the Impress team and a shortlist produced from which a panel chooses the winner. The panel is comprised of representatives from the publishing industry and the writing community.

The winner of the prize is offered a publishing contract with Impress Books with the aim of publishing the book in the year following the award. The Impress team also looks at all entries, whether on the shortlist or not, with a view to publication by Impress Books. Numerous entries from previous years have gone on to be published by Impress Books and other publishers, and many authors who have entered the prize have also gone on to be represented by agents.

It is our firm belief that the prize is not just about the winner but should also encourage emerging authors to write and to provide them with a focus and forum for their talent.
