Screencraft: Comedy Screenplay Contest 2018

Whether you have a romantic comedy or an action-comedy blockbuster, we want to read your script!

We’re thrilled to announce our 2018 Comedy Screenplay Contest. Big or small, our jury is looking for smart feature film screenplays with a strong command of the craft, lots of heart and unique comedic voices. All entries are eligible for optional feedback from a studio-trained professional reader.

1st Place: Feature GRAND PRIZE $ 1,000 Cash

  • phone consultations with top Hollywood literary managers and agents
  • personal introduction to studio executives and producers

2nd Place: $ 200 Cash

  • will receive a in-depth development and career strategy with the ScreenCraft team
  • personal introductions to managers, agents, producers and development executives

Top 3 Finalists:

  • written feedback from one of our professional Hollywood readers
  • Free license to Final Draft 10 screenwriting software.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • All writers at least 18 years of age are eligible. However, a writer who has earned more than $50,000 (or equivalent currency) from professional writing services for film or TV in the preceding year is not. (Contest winnings not included.)
  • All persons from anywhere in the world are eligible; however the material submitted must be in English.
  • All material submitted to other competitions or contests are eligible.
  • There are no requirements as to when the material was written.
  • The material submitted must not be encumbered by any obligation to, or option held by, a third party prior to entering the competition.
  • Any submitted work that becomes optioned, published, produced or purchased between the time of submission and the end of the judging period will no longer be eligible.
  • Material should be submitted in standard screenplay format, font, spacing and margin.
  • We have no preferences regarding title page content. Title and name of writer would suffice.
  • Adaptations are ineligible unless the underlying rights are owned by the writer or the work is in the public domain.
  • Feature screenplays longer than 140 pages will not be eligible.
  • All material must be submitted electronically as a PDF or it will not be eligible.

RULES:

  • Submissions are accepted via electronic submission only, between March 15, 2018 and June 1, 2018.
  • Entry fee for each screenplay is $49 until the early deadline on April 16th, and then $69 until final deadline on June 1st.
  • There is no limit to the number of projects you may submit.
  • Entries must be received on or before the deadlines and submission fee payment must be made in full at time of the submission. All entry fees are non-refundable.
  • Please proofread your script carefully before submitting.
  • Substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts of the submitted material will be allowed for a limited time with a $5 reentry fee via Coverfly (instructions will be provided in your submission confirmation email).
  • All submitted material must be original, and all rights must be wholly owned by the writer(s).
  • Material must be submitted by the writer. Material written by writing teams must be submitted by one of the writers, with consent of the other(s).  All writers must be credited on title page.
  • If a writing team is chosen as a winner, prizes will be given to the person who submits the project. Each team is responsible for dividing or sharing the prize money.
  • It is recommended that original material be registered with the WGA or The Library of Congress before submitting to any competition, however we do not require registration.
  • All ownership and rights to the scripts submitted to this contest remains with the original rights holders.

Here at BlueCat Screenplay Competition we provide written analysis for every script submitted. Our group of readers issue detailed notes with the goal of helping every entrant improve their screenplay. This process affords our entrants the option to rework, and then re-submit their scripts based on the feedback they receive. This is just one example of BlueCat’s main objective—to support and develop all screenwriters at every stage of the writing process.

Recent achievements by BlueCat Alumni include:

  • Young Il Kim’s script, “Rodham,” a 2012 Blacklist Script, recently attached director James Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now”). Young recently won the 2013 Alfred P. Sloan Commissioning Grant from Sundance, where he will write a biopic on Stephen Hawking.
  • Ana Lily Amipour’s debut feature, “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night,” premiered at 2014 Sundance.
  • Ashleigh Powell sold her script, “SomaCell,” to Warner Brothers, with David Goyer attached to produce.

2015 BlueCat Screenplay Competition – SHORT SCRIPTS WANTED – EARLY DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 1ST

The BlueCat Screenplay Competition awards the world’s largest cash prize for best short screenplay: $10,000, with three finalists each receiving a cash prize of $1,500.      

In keeping with our longstanding tradition, every screenplay will receive one written analysis. All submissions entered by September 1st, 2014 will receive their written analysis by October 1st, 2014.

If you enter during our next submission period (September 2nd – October 15th), you will not receive your analysis until November 10th.

 

ENTRY FEES: $40 for short screenplays, $60 for feature length screenplays. Students will be eligible to submit their short screenplay at a discounted $35 rate for the duration of the competition.   

 

  • All screenplays submitted early, by September 1st, 2014 will receive their written analysis by October 1st, 2014. ($60 Features, $40 Shorts)

Since 1998, the BlueCat Screenplay Competition has provided a community for the unknown screenwriter to develop their work, giving undiscovered talent a path to professional success.
