Hard Times Writing Contest

Deadline: Postmarked by May 30, 2016.

  •  Write about a difficult experience in your life, how you overcame this obstacle, and how you were changed by it. Winning stories will be chosen for originality and creative writing style. Stories should be previously unpublished, and should not exceed 5,000 words (double-spaced, 12 point font).
  • Your name, address, email and title of work should appear on a separate cover sheet. The entry fee per submission is $25 ($20 for Workshop members).
  • Multiple entries are accepted.
  • Enclose legal size self-sealing SASE for critique and list of winners. Do not use Fedex, certified mail, etc.
  • Make check or money order payable to The Writers’ Workshop, and mail to:  Hard Times Contest, 387 Beaucatcher Road, Asheville, NC  28805.
  • Emailed submission may be sent to, with “Hard Times Contest” in the subject. Entry fee is payable online.

SUBMISSION SIZE: Up to 4 poems per submission, totaling no more than 10 pages.

One piece per submission, up to 7,500 words. Novel excerpts will
not be accepted. Prizes: $1,000 and publication.

Harpur Palate Prize for Creative Nonfiction

The brand-new Harpur Palate Prize for Creative Nonfiction is open to all writers who submit unpublished creative nonfiction short story submissions under 8000 words. You may enter as many stories as you wish. No more than one piece per entry. The small $15 entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Harpur Palate. The winner receives a $500 prize, publication in the winter issue of Harpur Palate, and two copies of the issue in which the winning piece appears. Winners are also featured on our blog and highlighted in the journal. We encourage emerging as well as established writers to submit to our contests.

Postmark Deadline: November 15

Contest Guidelines:
All creative nonfiction submissions entered will be considered for publication, and all entrants will receive a copy of the issue in which the winning story appears.  Please include a cover letter with your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and story’s title.  Entrant’s name should only appear on the cover letter and should not appear anywhere on the manuscript. Manuscripts cannot be returned. Please be advised that we do not accept entrants who have any affiliation with Binghamton University.
