“We shall arrive soon” near-future science fiction contest

As part of True North 2018, we are inviting submissions of original near-future fiction of 1,000 words or less on the theme “We shall arrive soon”.

We invite authors to imagine how technology will affect our lives in the coming decades. We want you to explore how technology may be used to improve human well-being, contribute to healthier and safer communities and bring about innovations that benefit us all. We also want you to examine how technology could be misused, or applied in ways that have negative impacts on individuals, groups or wider communities. We are looking for stories that depict a complex reality and fit the theme of True North’s vision of tech for good.

The winner will be selected by Erin Bow, physicist turned poet turned science fiction and fantasy author.

What to submit: Original, unpublished fiction of 1,000 words or less

Due date: 25 April 2018

Prizes: First place prize of $1,000, with two runners-up prizes of $250 each (Canadian dollars)

Who can enter: Anyone, anywhere in the world
