Room Magazine’s Annual Contest

Calling all women writers: Sharpen your pencils or fire up your laptop and send us your fiction, poetry, or creative non-fiction contest entries.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked or submitted online no later than July 15, 2013.

Entry Fee: $30 per entry. Non-Canadian entries: $42 Canadian dollars.

Each submission includes a complimentary one-year subscription to Room. Writers who submit more than one entry will get a multiple year subscription.

Prizes: 1st prize in each category – $500, 2nd prize – $250. Winners will be published in a 2014 issue of Room. Honourable mentions will be featured on Room’s website.

Valentine’s Day Ideas Romantic Story Writing Content, an international contest on love and friendship. The competition is open to authors worldwide. is specially designed for all those people who are in love or are searching for their soul mate.  Since Valentine’s Day is here so we are starting a writing competition where people can share their special moments in form of a story. Love is a special feeling which brings in lots of emotion and all of us at one time or the other has experienced it. So this writing competition will give an opportunity to all the love birds to pen down their story and share with the others.  Those who fall short of words while expressing themselves, sending pictures and drawings of their special moments will also work great.

Details Pen down your love story which is special and interesting. The story should be original and of 3000 words. If words are not your friends then you can also send in your romantic drawings or photographs to enter the contest. Complete details regarding the rules, eligibility and others are present on the site.


Prizes The judges will select 10 best stories. First prize $1000. Nine authors will get one of nine $100 Amazon Gift Cards. Moreover the best stories will be published on the site and will be given a space in an e-Book.

The X.J. Kennendy Award for Nonfiction – 7th Biennial Contest

Four runners-up will receive $100 and publication. 3,500 words more or less.

The Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security is pleased to announce its 6th Annual Essay Competition.

ESSAY THEME: What is a dangerous idea you have about homeland security, and why is it dangerous? Your response may be general or focus on a specific aspect (organizational, policy, strategy, practice, technological innovation, social impact, etc.) or discipline/field, (emergency management, public health, law enforcement, critical infrastructure, intelligence, etc.). Essays may be written from any perspective – e.g. government, private sector, cultural, local community, or citizen. The competition is open to everyone with an interest in homeland defense and security. The essay should be no more than five pages, single spaced, in twelve point type.

Deadline: February 15, 2013.

The winner will receive a $500 cash award. Additionally, the winning and four top finalist essays will be considered for publication by Homeland Security Affairs, the online journal published by the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for the Homeland Defense and Security.
