CONSTANCE ROKE CREATIVE NONFICTION CONTEST

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine,

The First Annual Authors First Writing Contest

For the novel contest, entrants can submit a work of 40,000 words or longer. There is no limit on the genre – the author just has to show a passion for writing on the page. The work cannot have been previously published anywhere. The winner will receive a publishing contract from The Story Plant, $5000, and an iPad mini loaded with a year’s worth of Story Plant books. Five runners-up will receive an iPad mini loaded with a year’s worth of Story Plant books.

ON THE SAME PAGE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES OPENING OF 2014 WRITER’S COMPETITION

West Jefferson, NC – Ashe County’s On the Same Page Literary Festival, now in its seventh year, is opening the Festival’s annual writing competition. In association with the 2014 Festival, which will take place September 16-20 in Ashe County, NC, the Page Crafter’s Prize recognizes writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry with cash awards. Winning writers will have the opportunity to read their work during the On the Same Page Literary Festival.
The Page Crafter’s competition is designed to encourage and acknowledge emerging writers and to reinforce the On the Same Page Literary Festival’s commitment of celebrating the creation of new work.
Page Crafter’s Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Prize money totaling $900 will be presented: $200 for first place, $100 for second place, in each category.
Deadline for submissions is July 17, 2014, (postmarked snail mail or email submissions) and winners will be notified by August 21, 2014. Prose entries are limited to 1,000-words; no more than 50 lines of poetry will be accepted. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 (U.S.) per submission is required. There is no limit to the number of entries per person.

Announcing The Hal Prize Creative Contest Open to All

The Peninsula Pulse, a news, art and entertainment publication based in Door County, WI, proudly presents the 2014 Hal Prize.
The Hal Prize is open to writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and to photographers throughout the United States. Judges for each category include prestigious and professional authors and photographers including authors Heid Erdrich, Michael Perry, and Lesley Kagen and photographers Len Villano and Kelly Avenson.
The Hal Prize offers publication in the Peninsula Pulse’s annual Literary Issue, reading a readership of 17,000. Cash awards of up to $150, a week stay at Write On, Door County (a literary retreat located in the heart of the Door Peninsula), a class at Peninsula School of Art (a nationally recognized year-round destination for artists and art appreciators), and other prizes will be awarded.
Judging this year’s poetry contest is Heid Erdrich, author of four poetry collections, most recently Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems. Her collection National Monuments received the 2009 Minnesota Book Award for Poetry. She is the author of Original Local: Indigenous Food Stories and Recipes from the Upper Midwest and teaches in the MFA creative writing program at Augsburg College.
Juding this year’s nonfiction contest is Michael Perry, whose bestselling memoirs include Population 485, Truck: A Love Story, Coop, and Visiting Tom. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an amateur pig farmer. He hosts the nationally-syndicated “Tent Show Radio,” performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band the Long Beds (currently recording their third album for Amble Down Records). He has recorded three live humor albums including Never Stand Behind A Sneezing Cow and The Clodhopper Monologues and is currently finishing his first young adult novel.
Judging this year’s fiction contest is New York Times bestselling author Lesley Kagen, a Milwaukee native whose novels include Whistling in the Dark (which appeared on the American Booksellers list, Midwest Booksellers list, and won the Midwest Booksellers Book of the Year), Land of a Hundred Wonders, Tomorrow River, Good Graces, and Mare’s Nest.
The judges for this year’s photography contest include Len Villano and Kelly Avenson.
Photography Director for the Peninsula Pulse and Door County Living Villano is also an artist, musician, recording engineer and producer, who left a promising career in architecture years ago to devote his life to capturing the beauty of nature on film.
Kelly Avenson, owner and photographer at Avenson Photography (located on Third Avenue in downtown Sturgeon Bay), specializes in real life and portraiture photography. Her work can be found in the pages of the Door County Advocate, the walls of Greco Gallery “an artistic boutique,” and many homes throughout the county, state and country. She was honored to be chosen for the Art of Photography Show in San Diego in 2010 along with being published in Budget Travel Magazine, National Geographic Kids and other publications throughout the country.
The Hal Prize is presented in collaboration with Write On, Door County, a nonprofit organization promoting writing and reading to year-round and seasonal residents in the county.
The Hal Prize is held in the spirit of the late Hal Grutzmacher, a professor and Door County bookstore owner, by offering commentary and encouragement to promising writers and photographers.

Arch Street Press’ Annual Prize for America’s Best College Writer

Arch Street Press is pleased to announce its annual prize chosen from America’s top undergraduate and graduate student writers in the nonfiction category. The Arch Street Prize is designed to stimulate interest in writing across the country and to promote today’s extraordinary young writers. Arch Street Press offers each winner a standard contract, together with a mentoring program and $1,000 cash prize.

ELIGIBILITY 

Any writer between the ages of 18 and 30 who has not previously published a volume of nonfiction prose is eligible to enter the competition. Writers must submit proof of enrollment (a transcript or letter from a school official confirming his/her status as an undergraduate/graduate student) from an accredited U.S. institution. Writers are still eligible if they are living abroad while enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in the U.S. 

 MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS 

The manuscript must be a word-processed work of nonfiction that does not exceed 5,000 words. We accept both email (preferred) and postal mail submissions. Please include a cover sheet with your name, address, phone number and the title of your manuscript. Put your name on the cover sheet only; to ensure that every manuscript finalist is evaluated with the utmost fairness, all manuscripts are submitted to the judges without any identifying material. Enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for mail submissions, for notification of the title and author of the winning manuscript, and for the return of your submitted manuscript. There is no reading fee; please do not include checks or cash with your manuscript submission. Reasonable care will be taken, but Arch Street Press cannot be held responsible for manuscripts lost in the mail, or for the return of those unaccompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Description

Currently accepting short stories of any genre ranging from 2,000 to 7,500 words. TBL strives to publish writers with engaging stories, vivid characters, and fresh perspectives and styles. All winners will be published in Tethered By Letters’ Spring Quarterly Journal and finalists will be considered for later publication, after working with a senior editor. International submissions welcome.

YA Novel Discovery Contest

Serendipity Literary Agency in conjunction with Sourcebooks Inc. is hosting their fifth annual 

YOUNG ADULT DISCOVERY COMPETITION

No query? No pitch? No problem!

Have a young adult novel—or a YA novel idea—tucked away for a rainy day? Are you putting off pitching your idea simply because you’re not sure how to pitch an agent? No problem! All you have to do is submit the first 250 words of your novel and you can win exposure to editors and a review of your manuscript from one of New York’s TOP young adult literary agents, Regina Brooks.?

NOVEMBER IS NaNoWriMo

In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.org)—an international event where aspiring novelists are encouraged to write an entire novel in 30 days—this contest is meant to encourage the aspiring YA author to get started on that novel by offering an incentive for completing the first 250 words.

The contest opens November 1st and closes November 30th, 2013 at 11:59PM.

GREAT PRIZES

The Grand Prize Winner will have the opportunity to submit an entire manuscript to YA literary agent Regina Brooks AND receive a free, 10-week writing course, courtesy of Gotham Writers’ Workshop, plus a collection of gourmet teas from Possibiliteas.co!

The Top Five Entrants (including the Grand Prize winner) will receive a 15-minute, one-on-one pitch session with Regina Brooks, one of New York’s premier literary agents for young adult books. They will also receive commentary on their submissions with editors from Scholastic, Feiwel and Friends, Random House/Penguin, Kensington, Kimani Tru, Candlewick, Bloomsbury, Simon and Schuster, and Sourcebooks. In addition, they will receive a year’s subscription to The Writer magazine!

First 50 Entrants will receive a copy of Writing Great Books for Young Adults by Regina Brooks.

YA literary agent Regina Brooks and her team will read all of the entries and determine the top 20 submissions. These submissions will then be read by Deidre Jones Little Brown, Nicole Raymond Candlewick, Aubrey Poole Sourcebooks, Kendra Levin Viking Penguin, Mercedes Fernandez Kensington, Annie Nybo Simon and Schuster, Erica Finkel Abrams Books, Monica Jean Random House/Penguin , Catherine Laudone Simon and Schuster, Stacey Friedberg Penguin Group, Laura Whitaker Bloomsbury, Anna Roberts Feiwel and Friends.

These judges will whittle the top 20 down to five, and each of the five winners will be provided commentary on their submissions.

One entry per person; anyone age 14+ can apply. Open to the U.S. & Canada (void where prohibited). Entries for the YA Novel Discovery Contest will be accepted from 12:01am (ET) November 1st, 2013 until 11:59pm November 30th, 2013 (ET). There is a $15 entry fee.”

What are the judges looking for in a submission? 
Entries will be judged based upon creativity, word usage, and the ability to instantly draw a reader into a story. Since the contest is limited to a title and 250 words, each word must be carefully chosen to have the most impact. This simulates the browsing experience of the average book buyer, who reads the title and first paragraph of a book before making a purchasing decision.
