SEE THE VOICE: Visible Verse 2008 call for videopoems

Pacific Cinémathèque and curator Heather Haley are seeking videopoem submissions from around the world for the annual Visible Verse screening and performance poetry celebration, Nov. 6, 2008 Visible Verse is North America’s sustaining venue for the presentation of new and artistically significant videopoetry.

Official guidelines:

* Visible Verse seeks videopoems, with a 15 minutes maximum duration.
* Either official language of Canada is acceptable, though if the video is in French, an English-dubbed or-subtitled version is required for consideration. Videos may originate in any part of the world, however.
* Pieces will be judged on true literary merit. The ideal videopoem is a wedding of word and image, the voice seen as well as heard.
* Please, do not send documentaries, as they are outside the featured genre.
* Videopoem producers should provide a brief bio, full name, and contact information in a cover letter. There is no official application form nor entry fee.
* Submission deadline is 1 September, 2008.

Three Candles Press Open Book Award

three candles press is pleased to announce the second Three Candles Press Open Book Award for the best book of poems by a poet in any stage of his or her career. The contest will be judged by Deborah Keenan, whose most recent book is Willow Room, Green Door (New and Selected Poems), winner of the Minnesota Book Award.

Award: Winner receives $500.00 and 25 copies of the winning book. Deadline Oct. 15th (post-mark date). The winner will be notified at the end of December. Runners up and two alternates will be posted on the website by January 15th, 2009. The book will be available on the three candles website, through online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and at fine booksellers in America and Europe. The winner will receive a standard royalty contract.

Guidelines: Manuscripts of 60 – 95 pages should have one cover page containing the poet’s name, address, phone number, email address and title of manuscript, and another with only the name of the manuscript. Please include only one acknowledgements page.

How the Contest Works: Three Candles Journal editor-in-chief Steve Mueske will read all submitted manuscripts and forward the finalists to the judge (around 12 manuscripts). The final round of materials will be judged anonymously (without coversheet or acknowledgements page). To avoid conflicts of interest, the following manuscripts will be ineligible: those from former students of the judge or from family members or friends of the judge; those who have workshopped with Steve Mueske or received comments from any poems contained in the manuscript; and those who have worked with the editor in some business capacity prior to the opening of the competition.

Manuscripts should be printed on one side only and bound with a sturdy clip. Contest entry fee is $22.00. Make checks payable to “three candles press”.

Rules of Eligibility

The Bakeless Prizes require that poetry manuscripts contain at least 50 pages of text; fiction, which includes novels and short-fiction collections, 150-450; creative nonfiction, 150-300.

The competition welcomes manuscripts from all authors, including non-US citizens, writing in English who have not yet published a book in their entry’s genre. Scholarly, critical, and historical works will not be considered in the creative nonfiction category. Manuscripts may contain stories, poems, chapters, and essays that have already been published individually in magazines, anthologies, and periodicals, but the manuscript itself cannot have been published previously as a whole, commercially or privately. Multiple submissions of manuscripts are allowed but contestants are asked to notify the contest coordinator immediately if a manuscript has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
Guidelines for Manuscripts

Please observe the following standards when submitting manuscripts:
# Typed and double-spaced pages on letter-size (8 1/2 x 11) paper
# Poetry manuscripts may be single-spaced
# Good-quality photocopied or letter-quality printed manuscripts are acceptable.
# Include 2 cover pages: one containing the author’s name, address, Phone number, manuscript title, and genre, the other containing only title and genre.
# The author’s name must not appear on any page of the manuscript, except for memoir.
# Do not include an author’s note or biographical information.
# Do not include a publication acknowledgments page.
# Revisions and additions will not be accepted once manuscripts have been received.

The above guidelines will help to insure efficient handling of the manuscripts as well as the process of judging them anonymously. In the case of a manuscript not conforming with the above guidelines, the manuscript becomes ineligible for consideration and the entry fee will be returned.

2008 Juked Fiction and Poetry Prizes

We are now accepting entries for our 2008 Fiction and Poetry Prizes.

Submission Guidelines:

First prize for each genre: $500 and publication in our upcoming print issue, Juked #6.
Final judges: Mark Winegardner (fiction) and Angela Ball (poetry).
Current and former students of the final judges are not eligible to compete.

Fiction: send one story per entry. There is no length requirement.

Poetry: send up to five poems (no more than ten pages total) per entry.

Entries must be unpublished.

Simultaneous submissions are just fine, but please notify us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

Fee is $10 per entry, by cash or check or money order, payable to Juked; there is no limit on the number of entries you may submit.

Include a cover sheet with your name, address, e-mail, telephone number and the title(s) of your story or poems. Please do not put your name anywhere else on the manuscript. Every entry will be read blind.

Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for notification.

Manuscripts will not be returned; instead they will be gently placed in the recycling bin.

The Ledge 2008 Poetry Chapbook Competition

PRIZE: Winning poet will receive a $1,000 cash award and 25 copies of the published chapbook.

SUBMIT: 16-28 pages of original poetry with title page, biographical note and acknowledgements, if any. Please include your name, mailing address, email address, and phone number (optional). The Cathy Washington Prize

The Sacramento Poetry Center (established 1979) presents The Cathy Washington Prize, its annual poetry book contest.
—Submit a manuscript of 48-70 numbered pages of original poetry in any style in English. The manuscript must not have been published previously in book form, although individual poems appearing in print or on the web are permitted. Simultaneous submissions OK, but please let us know ASAP if your manuscript has been placed with another publisher.
—Entries will be judged blind. Submitted manuscript must contain 2 title pages: Name and contact information (including email address, if possible) should appear on first title page only. Name should not appear anywhere else in the manuscript.

2008 Holland Prize Guidelines

Logan House announces the fourth annual Holland Prize for unpublished poetry manuscripts (48-80 pages). The winning manuscript will be published in 2009, and the winner will receive $500. Submit manuscript, $25 reading fee, and SASE to Logan House, Rte. 1, Box 154, Winside, NE 68790, before August 1.

Everyone who submits to the Holland Prize will receive a copy of Disciples of an Uncertain Season by Larry Holland and will also receive the winning book.

Friends and close associates of the press are not eligible for the contest. We are interested in publishing the best manuscript that comes across our desks. We are looking for anything specifically regional, Great Plains, Midwest or Western related. We will award the Holland Prize to the best manuscript we read no matter what region you write from. The Gatewood Prize (women only)

The Gatewood Prize is Switchback Books’ annual competition for a first full-length (48-80 pp.) collection of poems by a woman writing in English between the ages of 18 and 39. It is named after Emma Gatewood, the first woman to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.

General Terms:

Poet must be a woman between the ages of 18 and 39. Our definition of “woman” is broad and includes transsexual, transgender, genderqueer, and female-identified individuals.

Multiple submissions are acceptable, but each manuscript must be entered under separate cover and fee.

A first book of poems will be selected for publication from an open competition of manuscripts POSTMARKED MAY 15, 2008 through JULY 1, 2008. (Since this is a postmark deadline, there is no need to send Express Mail, Fedex, or UPS. First Class or Priority Mail are preferred.) Manuscripts should be 50-75 pages of original poetry, in English, by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has neither published, nor committed to publish, a volume of poetry 48 pages or more in length in an edition of over 500 copies* (individual poems may have been previously published). “Connecting Online: Hookups, Reunions and Chance Encounters”

Writer and editor April Thompson is seeking first-person stories for an upcoming anthology of stories about connections made online.

“Connecting Online: Hookups, Reunions and Chance Encounters” will feature essays of NO MORE than 2,500 words about interpersonal connections made through the Internet. Submissions can be comical or irreverent, tear-jerking or thought-provoking: the caliber of writing is more important than the mood of the piece. Please note that essays should center on a particular encounter or relationship cultivated online, rather than expounding on the topic in general.

Stories accepted into the anthology will receive compensation upon publication of up to $150 depending on the length of the piece.

“Adventures in Hostelling” Writing Contest

“ADVENTURES IN HOSTELLING” WRITING CONTEST SEEKS SHORT PERSONAL STORIES

The “Adventures in Hostelling” Writing Contest seeks very short (150-250 words) stories recounting a personal experience that either took place at a hostel or was made possible through a hostel stay.

Organized in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA, the contest seeks real-life anecdotes that help to illustrate the range of broadening experiences made possible through hostelling. Travelers are invited to share tales of meeting memorable people, encountering new cultures or fresh perspectives, embarking on unforeseen adventures, making a life-altering decision, or any other hostel experience that had an impact on their lives.

Winners will be chosen by a jury including professional travel writers, other travel industry professionals, and Council staff and alumni. All winning stories will be printed in a special 50th anniversary commemorative publication, and prizes will be awarded as follows:

One Grand Prize winner will receive a voucher for round-trip, international travel on American Airlines. Three Jury Prize winners will each receive a Flip Video camera. Honorable Mention winners will each receive a one-year Hostelling International membership.

Founded in 1958, the Golden Gate Council of Hostelling International USA is a nonprofit network of 10 hostels in Northern California, providing quality, affordable accommodations at historic properties in both urban centers and in State and National Parks. In addition to offering accommodations for people of all ages, the Council runs outdoor and intercultural educational programs for underserved youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. An affiliate of Hostelling International USA and the International Youth Hostel Federation, the Council’s mission is “to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.”

Parlor Submission Guidelines

We are currently reading for Issue 5 – Summer 2008. The reading period will be open until August 15, 2008.

All submissions must be previously unpublished works of poetry, prose, and drama. Please review the appropriate section below for specific submission requirements.

Author may submit a maximum of five (5) works per submission period in any combination of the following:
– up to five (5) works of poetry
– up to three (3) works of prose and drama

Please email your submission to submissions@parlorjournal.com. In the subject line, please list your genre and full name. (Example: POETRY – John Doe)

Send a single Word document attachment with all your submissions in the file. All submissions must include one cover sheet with author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, title list of all submissions within the package, and which genre (poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, or drama) the author wishes each piece to be considered. Aside from the cover letter, author may not include his/her name on any page of the submission. This is to ensure that each submission is blind-edited by our staff.

Poetry

Poetry submissions must be visually formatted as intended for publication. Please use 12-point Times New Roman unless absolutely necessary.

Prose

(includes fiction, creative non-fiction, short-shorts, and novel excerpts)
Prose submissions must be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman. Each piece should be a maximum of 5,000 words.

Drama

(includes one-act plays, scenes from full-length plays, and screenplay excerpts)
Drama submissions should have appropriate formatting. We prefer 12-point Courier. Each piece should be a maximum of fifteen (15) pages.

New Southerner Literary Contest

$200 prizes for poetry, fiction and nonfiction

Three prizes of $200 each and publication in New Southerner will be awarded for works of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction.

* 5,000 word limit for prose
* 50 line limit for poetry
* Entry Fee: $10 per entry
* Multiple entries accepted
* Postmark deadline: October 1, 2008

Final judges will include:
Nonfiction — Kathryn Eastburn (author of A Sacred Feast and Simon Says)
Poetry — Erin Keane (author of The Gravity Soundtrack and The One-Hit Wonders)
and Cecilia Woloch (author of Tsigan and Late)
Fiction — Silas House (author of Clay’s Quilt and The Coal Tatoo)

All work must be typed on standard-sized paper. No manuscript will be returned; for acknowledgement of receipt, include self-addressed, stamped postcard with submission.

Send two copies—one with the author’s name, address, phone number and optional e-mail address in the upper right-hand corrner, the other with no author information. Include separate title page for each entry indicating title of work, category, author’s name, address and phone number.

Entries must be the author’s original, unpublished work and should be appropriate for publication in New Southerner. The magazine’s mission is to promote self-sufficient living, environmental stewardship and support for local economies. Minnesota Writers Fiction Contest

mnartists.org seeks new short-short fiction for the summer round of this literary competition and publication series for Minnesota writers. Submission deadline is June 30, 2008.

CALL FOR MINNESOTA WRITERS
The deadline for submissions for the second round in this short fiction contest is JUNE 30, 2008.

mnartists.org is launching miniStories, a quarterly short-short fiction competition coordinated by Electric Arc Radio’s Geoff Herbach (author of The Miracle Letters of T. Rimburg,Three Rivers Press). This new literary series showcases previously unpublished short stories by Minnesota writers which are selected by authors, editors, and publishing industry veterans from across the country. Winning stories are then published on mnartists.org and in the e-magazine access+ENGAGE. One grand-prize winning author will be selected from each quarter’s miniStories winners by series coordinator Geoff Herbach to receive a paid commission for a longer-form short story which will be published on mnartists.org.

There are readings at the Ritz Theater in Minneapolis at the end of each quarter’s contest cycle, at which miniStories winners and judges will read their fiction. An anthology collecting the inaugural year’s miniStories winning fiction will be published in April 2009 and available for sale at area bookstores.

June 2008 scribophile Contest

Our June contest is about mysteries. We want authors to submit the first chapter to an original mystery novel (the whole thing doesn’t have to be written yet, we just want the first chapter!). We’re looking for a first chapter that’ll set up some colorful characters, present an intriguing case, maybe include a little action, and in the end leave us wanting to read more! Minimum length is 2000 words, maximum is 5000 words. Entry is free to everybody. First prize is a $50 gift card to Amazon.com, 2nd prize is a $25 gift card. The contest runs from June 1, 2008 to June 30, 2008, and winners will be announced by July 7, 2008.
