Vol 3, Issue 1 2015 – Thought Notebook Journal

The space and time continuum that we live in produces many instances of cycles. Our breathing continues on in a cyclical nature, as does many processes in science, and society. These rhythmic events are observed all around us, some unconsciously and others controlled.

Be challenged and consider submitting your Cycles themed literary and visual art for our next journal issue. Think deeper about your work and provide a thematic connection with your submission.

Description:

“Nivalis”, the theme of the contest, represents the winter season. Interpretation of the theme is left to the writer’s fancy – the story may have winter as the backdrop, or may convey a sense of chill. It may be a gloomy tale up in the north, or a pleasant story away from the tropical heat. We are not too choosy about the genre either – we love what is known as literary fiction, but your story could as easily belong to the crime / mystery genre, or it may be a tale of horror if you have Edgar Poe in you. In other words, so long as there is a commonly accepted or acceptable interpretation of the theme embedded in the plot, it works for us. However, this contest is not for children’s stories, science fiction, fantasy, young adult, chick lit or similar such.

The contest will be judged by four independent judges, including Clare Wallace, Literary Agent for Darley Anderson.

Doris Betts Fiction Prize

The Doris Betts Fiction Prize awards the first-prize winner $250 and publication in the North Carolina Literary Review. Finalists will also be considered for publication in the NCLR.

Eligibility and Guidelines:

The competition is open to any writer who is a legal resident of North Carolina or a member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network. North Carolina Literary Review subscribers with North Carolina connections (lives or has lived in NC) are also eligible.

The competition is for previously unpublished short stories up to 6,000 words. One entry per writer. No novel excerpts. Stories do NOT have to relate to NCLR’s annual special feature topic.

Submit previously unpublished stories online at https://nclr.submittable.com/submit . Submittable will collect your entry fee via credit card ($10 NCWN members or NCLR subscribers / $20 for non-members/non-subscribers).

The Poetry Super Highway: Send a Book and Get a Book

The 14th Annual Poetry Super Highway
Great Poetry Exchange

The mission of the Poetry Super Highway
is to expose as many people to as many
other people’s poetry as possible.

What? – Send a book – Get a book

In February 2015, the Poetry Super Highway will coordinate a great free exchange of poetry publications amongst poets worldwide.

It’s not a contest. There are no judges, entry fees, winners, or losers.

Last year, 71 poets participated both sending their book and receiving another poet’s book from another randomly selected participant

By agreeing to participate, someone will be exposed to your poetry, and you will be exposed to someone else’s poetry.

How?

To participate you must volunteer to mail one copy of one poetry book that you have written to one other person participating. Just one book. In exchange, you will receive in the mail one copy of one poetry book written by another participating poet.

E-books are not eligible for the Great Poetry Exchange. Your book must be physical entity. Even if it’s self published, or one of one that you printed from your computer and stapled together…but please no e-books. (Though we will be repeating our annual Great E-Book Free For All later in the year!)

Please note, as the Great Poetry Exchange is open to everyone on planet Earth, it’s possible that you will be required to send your book to someone outside of your own country which will, of course cost you more in postage than it would to send it domestically.

Also, we’ll ask that you send us an e-mail in March once your book has actually been sent so we can keep track and make sure that all participants who send a book also get one.

You also must agree to send out your book within 2 weeks of being notified of who to send your book to.

Please note, it’s a circular exchange: You will be sending a book to a different person than you will be receiving one from.
