2017 San Francisco Writing Contest

The San Francisco Writers Conference is pleased to announce the 2017 San Francisco Writing Contest. The contest is open to all writers everywhere, including those attending the 2017 San Francisco Writers Conference. The entry fee is $35 per item.

Your entry must fit into one of the following categories:
* Adult Fiction
* Adult Nonfiction (including memoir)
* Children’s/YA Books

Entries may have been self-published or not-yet published, but not traditionally published. Entries can be up to 1500 words in length (or less, but not more).

Please use the contest registration form on this web site SFWriters.org/contest-registration to upload your entry/entries and pay. It’s easy! If you prefer to send your fee by check, mail both the entry and check to SF Writing Contest, PO Box 326, Oakley, CA 94561.

All fees and entries must be received by 5:00 pm Pacific Time on January 13, 2017.

Finalists will be announced on the website on February 3, 2017.

Winners will be announced during lunch on Friday, February 17, 2017, at the Conference.

The Grand Prize winner will receive $250 and a 15-minute in-person meeting at the conference or a 15-minute scheduled telephone call with a literary agent who represents work like yours. First place winners in each category will receive checks for $100.

Shelf Unbound Best Indie/Self-Published Book Competition

Deadline: October 1, 2016

Shelf Unbound book review magazine announces the Shelf Unbound Best Indie/Self-Published Book Competition. Any independently published book in any genre is eligible for entry. Entry fee is $50 per book. The winning entry will be selected by the editors of Shelf Unbound magazine.

“Independently Published” books include self-published books and e-books (such as those published through CreateSpace, Lulu.com, iUniverse, etc.) and/or books and e-books published through small presses releasing less than five titles per year. Books entered in last year’s competition are eligible for re-submission in this year’s competition. There is no limit to the number of books an individual can enter; each book is a separate entry. The competition is open to authors worldwide; books must be in English. Any length book is eligible. The competition also includes the Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book, open to fiction and non-fiction sports-related books, in honor of Pete Delohery, author of the novel Lamb to the Slaughter.

More than 100 books deemed by the editors as “notable” entries in the competition will also be featured in the December/January 2017 issue of Shelf Unbound.

The winner of the Pete Delohery Award for Best Sports Book will receive $1,000.

WOW! hosts a (quarterly) writing contest every three months. The mission of this contest is to inspire creativity, communication, and well-rewarded recognition to contestants. Mike’s Not-Entirely-Serious Wantonly-Rule-Breaking Adverb Writing Challenge

Greetings from Bristol,

In the last couple of emails I’ve mentioned the rather fun and not particularly serious Adverb Writing Challenge. I’m pleased to say we have received over 20 stories, so the challenge now has a dedicated page on my website.

I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all the writers that have submitted their stores and supported this rather crazy project. Special mentions go to Mike Scott Thomson, for co-creating the challenge with me, and Allen Ashley, who has spread the word like a madman and encouraged many of the entries.

Because everyone is giving their time for free, Mike and I thought it would be nice if the challenge were to support a charity. So, this is how it will work…

How the Adverb Challenge Works

• 100 words max
• Cram your story with as many adverbs as you can
• Entry is FREE
• EVERY story is published
• If we receive over 100 stories, we’ll produce an anthology

If we do get to 100 stories, the anthology will be released in print and eBook formats.

Any profit made from book sales will be donated to First Story, a charity that supports and inspires creativity, literacy and confidence in UK secondary schools where over 50% of the pupils are considered deprived.

First Edition Children’s Book Writing Contest

Southwest Human Development is seeking children’s book manuscripts

in the First Edition Children’s Book Writing Contest. The manuscript should

be 600 words or less and suitable for children birth to five years old.

Poems, which must be in English, can be on any subject and presented in any form or style . 

There are no restrictions on content. Though if there is any doubt the poet might be asked to justify how their poem engages the theme.

All poem must be the unpublished work of the person entering them into the competition.

The actual given name of the entrant must be given, even if the poem is to be published under a pen name.

Poems should not have any indication within them to allow for the identification of the poet.

There is no length or content restrictions and a short poem is just as likely to win as a longer one.

THE 2016 GULF COAST PRIZE IN TRANSLATION (POETRY)

Deadline: August 31st, 2016

Gulf Coast is now accepting entries for the Gulf Coast Prize in Translation for an extra three weeks. In 2016, the contest is open to poetry in translation. The winner receives $1,000 and publication in the journal. Two honorable mentions will each receive $250. All entries will be considered for paid publication on our website as Online Exclusives.

Entry to the contest also includes a one-year subscription to Gulf Coast, beginning with the issue in which the corresponding prize winners are published.

This year’s contest will be judged by Idra Novey. She is the author of the novel Ways to Disappear, selected as a New York Times‘ Editors’ Choice. Her most recent poetry collection,Exit Civilian, was chosen by Patricia Smith for the 2011 National Poetry Series. Her translations include Clarice Lispector’s The Passion According to G.H. and Birds for a Demolition, the Selected Poems of Manoel de Barros.

Guidelines

Poetry: Send up to ten pages of poetry translated into English. Excerpts from longer works are welcome and preference will be given to contemporary work published within the last fifty years. As part of your submission, include the text in its original language, provide a brief synopsis (no more than 200 words) of the work and the author you are translating, and indicate whether you have, and can grant us, permission to publish the original work and the translation.

Demonstrations of Permission

We will not consider submissions without permissions. In your submission, please provide the following:

• A note (from the translator) in the Comments section of our Online Submission Manager stating that permissions are granted.
• In the event that the piece makes it to the final judging round: Written permission from the copyright holder granting you right to translate the work in your contest submission. Permission should name the work being translated, date consent was given, and identify the copyright holder.

2016 Barthelme Prize Judge Jim Shepard has written seven novels, including The Book of Aron, published in 2015, which won the Sophie Brody Medal for Excellence in Jewish Literature and the PEN/New England Award for Fiction, and four story collections, includingLike You’d Understand, Anyway, a finalist for the National Book Award and Story Prize winner. His previous novel, Project X, won the Library of Congress/Massachusetts Book Award for Fiction as well as the ALEX Award from the American Library Association. His short fiction has appeared in, among other magazines,Harper’s, McSweeney’s, The Paris Review, The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, The New Yorker, Granta, Zoetrope: All-Story,Playboy, and Electric Literature. He’s won a Guggenheim Fellowship, five of his stories have been chosen for The Best American Short Stories, two for The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, and one for a Pushcart Prize. He teaches creative writing and film at Williams College.

Since 1978, Musicworks has been dedicated to the development of new and passionate audiences for experimental music.
