There will only be one prize and the winning writer will receive 80% of the entry fee received. The Minimum prize however will not be less than R 1000.00

Caregiver Village – A new community

As you may be aware, the number of unpaid family caregivers in North America is 50 million and growing every day.

THE RULES of Submission:-

1.) Poetic Entries can be up to 40 lines long and in any poetic format.  Prose entries must be a minimum of 400 words and a maximum of 2000 words.

2.) Entrance fee – £2.50 for up to 3 entries to be paid on our fee page.  Please email if the name on the billing information is different to the name on the entry.

3.) Contestants must be aged 18 or over.

4.) There is a maximum submission of 5 pieces of prose and 5 pieces of poetry per month.

5.) In submitting you must guarantee that a.) you are an amateur writer and b.) that you will not vote for yourself in the contest.

6.) You retain the full usage rights of your work but we ask you not to submit work that has earned money elsewhere on the web.

7.) No PLAGARISM of any kind will be tolerated.  Anyone in violation of these rules will be banned from applying for future competitions.

8.) You agree that the judges and then the public’s votes are final.

We want this project to remain fun and encourage a love and passion for writing.  Please do not spoil this experience for everyone.

The Institute welcomes submissions for Volume II of a new series dedicated to socially engaged fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry by women.

What is socially engaged literature?

Socially engaged literature is defined by a creative work’s critical interaction with ideas and concepts of social, political, and cultural significance. For example, an author might choose to write a story that demonstrates the experience of war or human trafficking; that challenges prevailing conversations about the environment; or that highlights the challenges faced by immigrants in the world today. We look for strong narratives that engage with readers in a personal way, making difficult topics accessible through human stories.

Karen Connelly is the author of nine books of best-selling nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, the most recent being Burmese Lessons, a love story, a memoir about her experiences in Burma and on the Thai-Burma border.,She has won the Pat Lowther Award for her poetry, the Governor General’s Award for her non-fiction, and Britain’s Orange Broadband Prize for New Fiction for her first novel The Lizard Cage. Published in 2005, The Lizard Cage was compared in the New York Times Book Review to the works of Orwell, Solzhenitsyn, and Mandela, and hailed in the Globe and Mail as “one of the best modern Canadian novels.”

Her other books include Grace and Poison, One Room in a Castle, This Brighter Prison, The Disorder of Love, and The Small Words in My Body. Married with a young child, she divides her time between a home in rural Greece and a home in Toronto.

What to submit: Socially engaged works of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry that interact with and challenge social injustices of our time.

Length: 5,000 word maximum for fiction and creative non-fiction; poetry up to 5 pages.

Fees: We do not charge reading fees.

Compensation and copyright: Each successful submission will receive 2 paperback copies of the anthology as payment. The Institute of Arts & Social Engagement (IASE) requests Non-exclusive Anthology and Electronic rights. IASE retains the right to continue selling back issues of the journal in print and electronic format.

How to submit: Send your manuscript as an attachment (.doc or .rtf only, please do not submit .DOCX files) to magnoliajournal@theiase.org. Submissions must be typed, double spaced, using standard Arial or Times 12pt. font. Include your last name and title of the work in the email subject line (EX. Smith – Title of the work).

AWARD-WINING AUTHORS, EDITORS, PUBLICISTS AND PUBLISHERS TO BE SPEAKERS AT THE VENTURA COUNTY BOOK & AUTHOR FAIR NOVEMBER 5

(Ventura, CA – September 27, 2011) The Ventura County Book & Author Fair has announced speakers and sessions for its first four seminars to be held November 5th at the Pleasant Valley Community Park Auditorium in Camarillo, CA.  Speakers are top literary professionals from Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties. The Fair is produced by the Pacific Institute for Professional Writing, a CA nonprofit, and co-sponsored by the Ventura County Writers Club, Small Publisher, Artist and Writer Network (SPAWN), and the Book Publicists of Southern California.  The event is open to the public.

“We are pleased with the high caliber of speakers joining us this year,” states Kate Sexton, Festival Coordinator. “The educational sessions will cover a broad spectrum of subjects that are of interest to both the reading and writing communities. We will have extensive autograph areas for people to purchase the speakers’ book and have them signed in our Book Expo.”

        The Book Expo is free but for those who register online, they will receive a coupon worth 20% their first book purchase at the Expo. There is a $25 fee per session for attending the educational seminars. Seminars will run between sixty to ninety minutes. Several will have one instructor/speaker and others will be comprised of panel discussions. The fee for sessions will offset costs and proceeds will benefit PIPW’s youth writing programs, workshops, and other projects. There will be eight sessions in total. A full list of speakers and sessions will be available on the event’s website as of October first. A growing list of Book Expo exhibitors is available on the website.

AracaWorks ARACAWORKS WINTER 2011 PLAYWRITING CONTEST

The Araca Group, a Broadway theatrical producing company, is once again seeking “The Best Play” from playwrights in post-collegiate universities and professional study programs.  The style, subject and length of the submissions are entirely up to you.  However, this year, we are opening the contest up to emerging writers nationwide.

The selected playwright will have the opportunity for his/her play to be performed in a free and public reading to be held in December in New York City, directed by and acted in by a New York City creative team. The Araca Group will assume all travel expenses to and from your university.

The deadline for submissions is October 21, 2011. The winning play will be read in December 2011.  A release needed to accompany the  submission materials will be available on araca.com next week.
