The Writers’ Workshop of Asheville 2015 Writing Competitions

The Writers’ Workshop of Asheville is sponsoring two writing competitions, open to any writer regardless of residence. The awards for both contests are:

1st Place: Your choice of a 2 night stay at our Mountain Muse B&B, 2 free workshops (in person or on-line), or 50 pages line-edited and revised by our editorial staff.

2nd Place: Two free workshops, in person or on-line; or 50 pages line-edited.

      3rd Place: One free workshop; or 25 pages line-edited.

Hard Times Essay Contest   

Deadline: Postmarked by May 30, 2015.

 Write about a difficult experience in your life, how you overcame this obstacle, and how you were changed by it. Winning stories will be chosen for originality and creative writing style. Stories should be previously unpublished, and should not exceed 5,000 words (double-spaced, 12 point font).

Your name, address, email and title of work should appear on a separate cover sheet. The entry fee per submission is $25.

Announcing the Rothstein Diversity Prize: an Essay Contest for Teachers on Diversity in the Classroom

The Rothstein Diversity Prize is open to teachers of any grade, from private or public school, child care through four-year universities. Retired teachers are also eligible to enter. Entries may be on any subject related to diversity, but winning essays will be grounded in storytelling that brings the topic and the people involved to life.

The deadline for entries is 11:59 PM on June 1, 2015.

The Prize has no entry fee.

The winner will receive $300 and a copy of Irving Rothstein’s memoir It Couldn’t Have Been the Pay. 

Three runners-up will receive a copy of Rothstein’s memoir.

Essays by the winner and four runners-up will be featured on the Rocín website along with other selected submissions. Meaningful excerpts that share poignant ideas or perspectives on teaching and diversity may be showcased on social media.

Essays have no requirements for length or form. The essay’s content is most important.

Excerpts from all submissions may be featured on Rocín social media accounts, including Facebook and Twitter.

Entries must be submitted through the form at the bottom of this page, and must include a bio that includes a brief overview of their teaching career.

Winners will be announced on June 6, 2015 at Irving Rothstein’s book launch celebration in San Francisco. Winners do not need to attend, but selected excerpts will be read at the event.

Eden Mills Literary Festival: 2015 Literary Contest

Submission Deadline: July 31, 2015

Open internationally to aspiring or and modestly published writers, over the age of 16. 

Contest categories:

  • Short story (2500 words max.)
  • Poetry collection ( of 5 poems or less), or
  • one-act play

The best entry in each category will win a $250 prize. Winners will be invited to read a short selection of one to two minutes from their work at the Eden Mills Writers Festival on Sunday Sept. 13, 2015.

Entry Requirements:

  • Include four copies of each submission*
  • On a cover page, include title, with your name address, phone number, and email. Name and contact info should not appear on the copies of your manuscript.
  • Email entries will not be accepted.
  • Manuscripts will not be returned.

Submission Fee:

$15.00 (CDN) per entry. Cheques to be made payable to Eden Mills Writers’ Festival.

*A combination of entries may be sent in one envelope with one payment for each entry (e.g. a short story and a poetry collection, and $30.00).

Salamander 2015 Fiction Prize $1,500 Honorarium and Publication

Submissions run from May 1 – June 1, 2015

Salamander magazine will award a cash prize of $1,500 plus publication for the best fiction story. All entries will be considered for publication. Send no more than one story per entry. Each story must not exceed 30 double-spaced pages in 12 point font. Multiple entries are acceptable, provided that a separate reading fee is included with each entry. Contest reading fee: $15, includes a one-year subscription. 

Judge: Andre Dubus III
Andre Dubus III, author of six books, has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, The National Magazine Award for Fiction, and a 2012 Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. His novel House of Sand and Fog was a National Book Award finalist, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, and an Academy Award-nominated film. His book Dirty Love, published in 2013, was a New York Times “Notable Book” and a New York Times “Editors’ Choice” selection. His novel The Garden of Last Days is soon to be a major motion picture.
