Southampton Review: Stony Brook Undergraduate Short Fiction Prize

Cash Prize: $1,000

A prize of $1,000 will be given annually for a short story by a college student. The winner will also receive a full scholarship to attend the Southampton Writers Conference in July 2018. Using the online submission system, submit a story of up to 7,500 words by June 1, 2018. There is no entry fee.

2018 Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest

The 14th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest officially began in April, as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month. The theme for this year’s contest is “The Magic of ‘If . . .’ Through the Power of Poetry.” There are five new categories: “If I Could See The Future,” “If I Could Travel Back In Time,” “If I Had A Robot That Knew Everything,” “If I Believed Anything Was Possible,” “If Money Grew On Trees.”  Poets may submit a maximum of three poems, no more than one in each of three of the five contest categories.

Everyone is encouraged to enter the contest. Poets do not have to live in Lincoln to be eligible. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category. Last year the contest attracted 182 poets from 56 cities in eight (8) states and five (5) countries—the US, England, India, the Philippines, and Singapore. Poets submitted 454 poems. Ninety-six (96) young poets submitted 233 poems. The number of entrants and poems received greatly exceeded the number of poems submitted and poets entering the contest in any previous year.

Guidelines:

1. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners selected in each contest category
2.  Five (5) categories include: If I Could See The Future, If I Could Travel Back InTime, If I Had A Robot That Knew Everything, If I Believed Anything Was Possible, If Money Grew On Trees.
3.  Poets may submit a maximum of three (3) poems. Select three (3) of the contest categories and submit one poem from each.
4.  Poems may be in rhyme, free verse, Haiku, or other accepted poetry forms and of any length, up to a maximum of 60 lines.
5. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category.
6. Entry Forms and Contest Rules are available in the rack next to Front Desk at the Lincoln Public Library at Contest Deadline: Poems must be received no later than Saturday, July 21, 2018. Early submissions are appreciated.

Global Ethics Day is a global teach-in and an opportunity for institutions to explore the role of ethics in a globalized world.

Inspired by Earth Day and founded by Carnegie Council as part of its Centennial activities in 2014, it provides an opportunity for organizations around the world to hold events on or around this day.

We encourage institutions everywhere to use Global Ethics Day to hold programs focusing on ethics, such as lectures, film screenings, debates, panel discussions, or activities to help the environment. In the tradition of a “teach-in” model, these events will be run by each institution as it sees fit while being part of a worldwide Global Ethics Day.

Writers of the Future Contest 2018

WELCOME TO THE WRITERS OF THE FUTURE

The most enduring and influential contest in the history of SF and Fantasy

L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest is an opportunity for new writers of science fiction and fantasy to have their work judged by some of the masters in the field and discovered by a wide audience.

CURRENT CONTEST DEADLINE: JULY 1, 2018

No entry fee is required and entrants retain all publication rights.

Entries in the Writers of the Future Contest are adjudicated only by professional writers. Prizes of $1000, $750 and $500 are awarded every three months. From the four quarterly 1st Place winners each year, a panel of judges select one story as the grand prize winner. The writer of the grand-prize-winning story receives the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Pen Award and an additional $5000 cash prize.

1. No entry fee is required, and all rights in the story remain the property of the author. All types of science fiction, fantasy and dark fantasy are welcome.
2. By submitting to the Contest, the entrant agrees to abide by all Contest rules.
3. All entries must be original works by the entrant, in English. Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-party poetry, song lyrics, characters or another person’s universe, without written permission, will result in disqualification. Excessive violence or sex, determined by the judges, will result in disqualification. Entries may not have been previously published in professional media.
4. To be eligible, entries must be works of prose, up to 17,000 words in length. We regret we cannot consider poetry, or works intended for children.
5. The Contest is open only to those who have not professionally published a novel or short novel, or more than one novelette, or more than three short stories, in any medium. Professional publication is deemed to be payment of at least six cents per word, and at least 5,000 copies, or 5,000 hits.
6. Entries submitted in hard copy must be typewritten or a computer printout in black ink on white paper, printed only on the front of the paper, double-spaced, with numbered pages. All other formats will be disqualified. Each entry must have a cover page with the title of the work, the author’s legal name, a pen name if applicable, address, telephone number, e-mail address and an approximate word count. Every subsequent page must carry the title and a page number, but the author’s name must be deleted to facilitate fair, anonymous judging. Entries submitted electronically must be double-spaced and must include the title and page number on each page, but not the author’s name. Electronic submissions will separately include the author’s legal name, pen name if applicable, address, telephone number, e-mail address and approximate word count.
7. Manuscripts will be returned after judging only if the author has provided return postage on a self-addressed envelope.
8. We accept only entries that do not require a delivery signature for us to receive them.
9. There shall be three cash prizes in each quarter: a First Prize of $1,000, a Second Prize of $750, and a Third Prize of $500, in US dollars. In addition, at the end of the year the first place winners will have their entries judged by a panel of judges, and a Grand Prize winner shall be determined and receive an additional $5,000. All winners will also receive trophies.
10. The Contest has four quarters, beginning on October 1, January 1, April 1 and July 1. The year will end on September 30. To be eligible for judging in its quarter, an entry must be postmarked or received electronically no later than midnight on the last day of the quarter. Late entries will be included in the following quarter and the Contest Administration will so notify the entrant.
11. Each entrant may submit only one manuscript per quarter. Winners are ineligible to make further entries in the Contest.
12. All entries for each quarter are final. No revisions are accepted.
13. Entries will be judged by professional authors. The decisions of the judges are entirely their own and are final and binding.
14. Winners in each quarter will be individually notified of the results by phone, mail or e-mail.
15. This Contest is void where prohibited by law.
