This is a call for entries to the contest in every issue of Big Pond Rumours, the International Literary E-Zine. We have two issues a year with the deadline for the Summer issue being June 30^th and deadline for the Winter issue is November 30^th. BPR strives to have two independent Judges for each issue and delivers publication and $350 in prizes to the contest winners. We have no particular preference for genre and the primary requirement is that all submissions be previously unpublished.

Dream World Defenders Call-To-Write Challenge

Award-Winning Author Kathleen J. Shields is proud to announce her highly anticipated “Dream World Defenders” chapter book for ages 8 and up. At the end of the book she included a ‘Call to Write’ for all children in hopes that they would use their highly active imaginations to end the story. She had hoped this would be an excellent creative writing assignment for classrooms, but Erin Go Bragh Publishing Company has taken that dream a step further.

We call it the Dream World Defenders Call to Write Challenge – and we are encouraging readers ages 8-15 to finish the story and submit it to us for publication.

Step 1: Read Dream World Defenders (paperback or ebook)

Step 2: Write Your Own Ending (short story no more than 1500 words)

Step 3: Submit it and your signed release with parent’s permission to Erin Go Bragh Publishing

At the end of the year, Erin Go Bragh Publishing will combine the best stories into a collaboration book via ebook and print so every child can see their name and story published. Each author will receive a link to download their free e-book. Print books must be purchased. There is no entry fee or charge for publication. Author retains all rights to their story. Last Call! Children’s Writer-in-Residence Fellowship

The Associates of the Boston Public Library is currently accepting applications for its twelfth Children’s Writer-in-Residence. The program was created to provide an emerging children’s author with the financial support and quiet space needed to complete one literary work. Eligible projects include fiction, nonfiction, a script, or poetry intended for children or young adults. The fellowship provides a $20,000 stipend and an office at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square from September 2015 through May 2016.

Crooked Lane Books is a publisher of original mystery and crime fiction. We are looking for talented writers who are interested in writing to our specifications. These writers will receive a”bible,” outline or other “concept piece” that will lay out the settings, characters and sample plot kernels so that manuscripts can be written within our guidelines. This is the equivalent of writing for an existing series where characters and setting have been established and writers are fulfilling story ideas and turning them into finished manuscripts.

All About My Mother: Poetry & Creative Writing Contest

Mother’s Day is a not just a day to connect and celebrate your mother – but a day to honor her and show her how much you care. We are celebrating motherhood the entire month of May, through our All About My Mother Writing Contest.

Write an original essay, poem, prose poem or short story – no more than 400-500 words – by: May 1, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. PDT, to win flowers on Mother’s Day (or choose to send flowers to your loved one).

Here are some things to consider when honoring your mom:

1. Write about what your mom means to you.
2. Visualize a time when your mother was laughing. Recall a time when you two shared a good laugh over something.
3. Write a physical description of your mother. Write as if you were looking at a movie rather than a photograph.
4. Concentrate on a particular habit that your mother has and write about it.
5. Write about a moment when you discovered something new about your mother (maybe seeing her in a fresh way).

The 2015 Winter Tangerine Awards

The Awards will honor new and emerging poets and prose writers. Our two judges are Ocean Vuong, in poetry, and Jaquira Diaz, in prose. Like other Winter Tangerine ventures, the Awards will be judged blindly, so the focus is on the merit of the work rather than the prestige of the writer’s name.

We will be accepting free submissions of unpublished poetry and prose from April 1st to June 1st, 2015. 

We want to use this award to give writers the opportunity for recognition without imposing (sometimes restrictive) reading or contest fees on them – we want to make the WT Awards as inclusive of a competition as possible. We are very much interested in recognizing emerging writers specifically, so we will only accept submissions from writers who have not yet published a chapbook, collection of short stories, or a novel.

After going through an initial screening by WTR readers, the top 10 pieces in each category will be forwarded to the judges by June 5th for the final call of one winner and four finalists. The winners will be announced on July 1st. The winner in poetry and the winner in prose will receive a cash prize of $250 each, as well as a small box of (gently used) books and (never used) cookies.

The Weather Contest for Creative Nonfiction Magazine

For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about THE WEATHER. We’re not just making idle chit-chat; the weather affects us all, and talking about the weather is a fundamental human experience. Now, as we confront our changing climate, talking about the weather may be more important than ever.

Send us your true stories—personal, historical, reported—about fog, drought, flooding, tornado-chasing, blizzards, hurricanes, hail the size of golf balls, or whatever’s happening where you are. We’re looking for well-crafted essays that will change the way we see the world around us.

Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with an informative or reflective element and reach beyond a strictly personal experience for some universal or deeper meaning. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice; all essays must tell true stories and be factually accurate.

A note about fact-checking: Essays accepted for publication in Creative Nonfiction undergo a rigorous fact-checking process. To the extent your essay draws on research and/or reportage (and it should, at least to some degree), CNF editors will ask you to send documentation of your sources and to help with the fact-checking process. We do not require that citations be submitted with essays, but you may find it helpful to keep a file of your essay that includes footnotes and/or a bibliography.

Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1,000 for Best Essay and $500 for runner-up. All essays will be considered for publication in a special “Weather” issue of the magazine.

Guidelines: Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,000 words. There is a $20 reading fee, or $25 to include a 4-issue subscription to Creative Nonfiction (US addresses only). If you’re already a subscriber, you may use this option to extend your current subscription or give your new subscription as a gift. Multiple entries are welcome ($20/essay) as are entries from outside the United States (though due to shipping costs we cannot offer the subscription deal). $1600 top prize for short fiction in Writers’ Village Contest summer 2015

$1600 is the top prize on offer for short fiction in the Writers’ Village International Short Fiction Award summer 2015, with cash prizes totaling $3200. The second prize is $800, third prize $400 and there are five runner up prizes of $80. Ten further Highly Commended entrants will have their stories acknowledged at the site.

Everyone wins because every contestant, win or lose, gains feedback on how their stories were graded – plus tips for improvement.

Winners will be awarded the title ‘Winner, the Writers’ Village International Short Fiction Award summer 2015’ and see their work showcased online.

May 7-10, 2015: WRITERS’ RETREAT at FOLLY BEACH, SC

The Writers’ Workshop 15^th Annual Writers’ Retreat will be held May 7-10 (Thurs.-Sun.) at Folly Beach, SC. It is open to a small group of beginning or experienced writers, and is an ideal place to relax, write and review participant’s work.

Twice-daily sessions in fiction, creative non-fiction and memoirs will be led by The Writers’ Workshop instructors. Participants stay at a beach house near the ocean.

2015 Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize

We at Spider Road Press are celebrating excellent, unpublished flash fiction featuring a female protagonist. Enter your compelling flash fiction about complex women to win the 2015 Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize!

First Prize:  $100 and publication in the print and e-book editions of the next Spider Road Press anthology.

Second Prize: $25, publication on the Spider Road Press website, and a free copy of any Spider Road Press title.

Honorable Mention: Publication on the Spider Road Press website and a certificate.

Entries accepted March 1-May 1, 2015.

Fiction will be judged “blind” by a panel that includes authors Lani Longshore, Pamela Mooman, and Patricia Flaherty Pagan. Winners will be contacted in June, 2015. Enter your fiction today!

Submissions criteria:

•  Unpublished flash fiction featuring a female protagonist.

•  750 word limit per piece.

•  $12 entry fee per piece. (A $5 entry fee is available for graduate/undergraduate students, qualifying Texas writers, & Goddard College alumni. Students must state the name of their university in their cover email.)

•  No more than three submissions per writer.

•  Standard formatting. Please include your home address in your cover email.

•  Excerpts from longer works are not eligible.

•  No children’s fiction, romance, erotica, extreme horror or gore, young adult fiction, vampire or werewolf fiction, dark fantasy, erotic horror, or fan fiction.

•  No explicit scenes of sexual violence or child abuse.

•  Writers who enter simultaneous submissions must contact us should their work be published before June, 2015.

•  We regret that we cannot accept any submissions from writers under the age of 18.

•  We regret that, due to our small staff, it may take us four months to get back to writers about non-winning entries.

·  In recognition of their contribution to the writing community, members of the Houston Writers Guild, Writers’ League of Texas, and Goddard College alumni community may pay a reduced submission fee of $5. The willingness to provide us with a copy of your membership information (upon request) or Goddard graduation date are required.

 Musicworks’ 2015 contests are now open to receive entries from anywhere in the world! Musicworks is Canada’s only magazine that explores experimental music. Its two annual juried contests spotlight new literary and musical talent, offering cash prizes and opportunities to be published and heard.

 

“Sonic Geography” Writing Contest

Echoes in a Lisbon square. Waterdrops from an Iceland glacier. Birds in a Buenos Aires barrio. These are some of the sounds that have inspired contributors to “Sonic Geography,” our regular essay column. Choose any location—urban or rural, indoors or outside, cacophonous or mysteriously quiet. You have 500 words to describe how sound shapes your experience. So open your ears, and pick up your pencils.

Accepted file types: PDF only. $30 entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Musicworks; $5 each additional entry (unlimited).

 

First Prize: $500 cash AND your work published in Musicworks and on musicworks.ca
