The CutBank Chapbook Contest

21 January 2015

Submissions Open
: January 1 – March 31, 2015

Award
: Publication, $1000 cash prize, and 25 contributor copies.

Eligibility
: This competition is open to original English language manuscripts in the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. While previously published stand-alone pieces or excerpts may be included in a manuscript, the manuscript as a whole must be an unpublished work. Translations and previously self-published collections are ineligible. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable; please note that reading fees are non-refundable, and you must withdraw the manuscript immediately via Submittable if it is accepted elsewhere. Please do not include cover artwork with your submission; black and white illustrations are acceptable so long as you’ve obtained the rights. The author must not have a close personal or professional relationship with any current or previous CutBank staff members. Reading Fee:
$20; includes consideration and a copy of CutBank 83 upon its release in summer 2015. International applicants must send a SASE to receive a copy of the issue, or email editor.cutbank[at]gmail[dot]com to coordinate shipping as we are no longer able to ship internationally.

What We’re Looking For:
Startling, compelling, and beautiful original work. We’re looking for a fresh, powerful manuscript. Maybe it will overtake us quietly; gracefully defy genres; satisfyingly subvert our expectations; punch us in the mouth page in and page out. We’re interested in both prose and poetry – and particularly work that straddles the lines between genres. Manuscripts should be cohesive and coherent; in other words, your manuscript should resonate and make sense as a book.

Guidelines for Electronic Submissions: We only accept submissions electronically. Entries must be received no later than midnight MST on March 31, 2015. Please submit 25 to 40 pages of typed poetry or prose in either DOC/DOCX/RTF/PDF format. For poetry and short prose, please include no more than one piece per page. Images are acceptable, but only in black and white; you must obtain reprint rights for any included images. Include page numbers, table of contents, and, if applicable, an acknowledgments page addressing where sections have been previous published. Submissions should include two cover pages as the first two pages of the document: one with the manuscript’s title, the other with the title, author’s name, address, and e-mail address. The author’s name should not appear anywhere else in the manuscript. Results will be announced via e-mail and posted at www.cutbankonline.com in late May 2015.

The Long and Short of It
: The CutBank Chapbook Contest honors a book of original poetry, fiction or creative nonfiction by a single author; translations are not eligible for this award. The winning author receives a $1000 honorarium plus 25 copies of the published book. The winner will be announced by CutBank, the winning book will be featured on the CutBank website, and we’ll do our best to distribute it to regional independent bookstores. The contest will be judged by the CutBank editorial staff. Entries must be submitted between January 1 and March 31, 2015. All entries must be made through our submission manager. Manuscripts should be 25-40 pages in length of poetry (a cohesive poetry manuscript), fiction (either a short fiction collection or novella), or creative nonfiction (one long essay or a short collection of essays). Please indicate in the acknowledgements if any sections of the manuscript have been previously published, and where; the manuscript as a whole must be an unpublished work. Manuscript revisions are not permitted during the contest. Multiple entries are fine as long as each is accompanied by a submission fee (in which case you will receive an additional copy of CutBank). The author must not have a close personal or professional relationship with any current or previous CutBank staff members.

The CLMP Code of Ethics:
CLMP’s community of independent literary publishers believes that ethical contests serve our shared goal: to connect writers and readers by publishing exceptional writing. We believe that intent to act ethically, clarity of guidelines, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end, we agree to 1) conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers, judges, or editors; 2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines — defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and 3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This Code recognizes that different contest models produce different results, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this Code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage.

It is truly an honor to read your work. We wish you the best of luck!

Zoetic Press Calls for Submissions

21 January 2015

Zoetic Press wants art and literature that tiptoes the tightrope between now and then—we are actively reading submissions for both NonBinary Review & Unbound Octavo.

We want language that makes us reach for a dictionary, a tissue, or both. Words in combinations and patterns that leave the faint of heart a little dizzy. We want insight, deep diving, broad connections, literary conspiracies, personal revelations, or anything you want to tell us about the themes we’ve chosen. Literary forms are changing as we use technology and typography to find new ways to tell stories—for work that doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre, we’ve created a separate category to properly evaluate submissions of a hybrid or experimental nature.

Each issue of NonBinary Review is focused on a single theme:

Issue #5 (reading period closes April 1, publication June 2015): Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow

https://nonbinaryreview.submittable.com/submit/36219

Issue #6 (reading period closes June 1; publication August 2015): 1001 Arabian Nights

https://nonbinaryreview.submittable.com/submit/37890

We are a paying market–1 cent per word for prose/hybrid work, $10 flat fee per poem, and $25 flat fee for art.

Please note that at present, the Zoetic app is accessible through iPad & iPhone only, with future updates to include Android versions. When submitting your work, please note that if selected for publication, your work will appear in electronic form only. Please download our free app to familiarize yourself with our content and unique publishing model!  http://ow.ly/xj6fa

For more detailed guidelines, please expand the guidelines box of the genre you’re submitting to on our Submittable page.

Unbound Octavo is a collaborative publication, with each issue featuring a set of “interlocking” stories created by authors who may never have otherwise “met”—we are reading stories which interlock into the current story published on the website—every six weeks, a new story will post online and we’ll be reading stories related to the new posted story. UO’s word limit is 1,000 words for interlocking stories.

To read the current story we’re looking for which we’re seeking interlocking stories, please visit www.unboundoctavo.com

To submit a story (up to 1000 words) to Unbound Octavo, visit:

https://nonbinaryreview.submittable.com/submit/35982

Unbound Octavo is a paying market, $25 flat fee per piece of art or flash fiction!

Zoetic Press is always looking to publish reviews—though this is the only category for which we do not pay authors, we definitely work hard to promote authors through our social media networks. Unlike our imprints NonBinary Review & Unbound Octavo, book reviews are published online.  To submit a review, visit:

https://nonbinaryreview.submittable.com/submit/36181

Zoetic Press is seeking associate editors! This position is a volunteer position & will require no more than a 4-hour weekly time commitment. We are looking for associate editors with a background in the arts, who can give articulate feedback on fiction, poetry & visual art. The duties for this position are light, and include reading submissions, voting on submissions, and basic copy editing duties. “FIVES” New Play Festival seeking submissions

21 January 2015

BLACK BOX Playwriting Competition: FIVES

Five plays. Five actors. Five winners. $500 in prize money!

BLACK BOX is pleased to announce our second annual new theatre festival, FIVES. We are seeking submissions of unpublished, original work (works that have received previous staged readings or productions will also be considered), between 10-20 minutes in length. Contest is open to playwrights ages 16 and up.

Plays should be of a strong ensemble nature with emphasis on character rather than spectacle. Successful entries will have a five-member cast, and be crafted specifically to exploit our intimate performance space (30′ x 15′ stage). Changes in scenery or setting should be achievable quickly and with few major set moves. Our focus is on fundamental dramaturgy: plot, character and theme. All types of work will be reviewed – comedy, drama, fantasy, etc; however, musicals and children’s scripts are not being solicited at this time.

All work must be compatible with the BLACK BOX mission to produce “theatre with integrity.”

*Entries must be submitted as hard copies (3 copies) by MARCH 5, 2015. (We are not accepting electronic submissions at this time.)

Up to two entries may be submitted by an author. Each entry must be submitted separately, and include a different pseudonym. A $10.00 entry fee (check or money order) must accompany each script.
