First place is publication, $1,000 prize, and 25 contributor copies.

Three finalists will be announced, and all previously unpublished work

will be considered for publication as a general submission to the journal.

Submit 15 to 30 pages of poetry.

Deadline November 7, 2020. The poetry can be of any type, length, or content, but it must be your own. The poetry can be serious or whimsical, fact or fiction, but it should strike a chord that makes us sit up and take notice. Grand prize winner (Booksie Gold Poet Laureate) – $1,000, gold winner badge, writing featured across the site, $20 in books chosen by winner from the Booksie Bookstore, and two runners-up (Booksie Silver Poet Laureates). Runner-up $150, silver winner badge, writing featured across the site, $20 in books chosen by winner from the Booksie Bookstore. $7.95 ENTRY FEE.

Our competition is for poems based on a painting (this can be broadly interpreted). There are no style or length restrictions, but it should be stressed that a short poem is just as likely to be selected as a longer one.
1st prize is £75  –   2nd prize is £50  –  3rd prize is £25

all entries must be received before midnight THURSDAY 24th SEPTEMBER 2020
Entries received after this time will be discarded. All entries are judged anonymously so please do not put any identifying features on the poems.

Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest

Welcome to the 18th annual Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest.

Submit published or unpublished work. $8,000 in prizes.

Deadline: September 30, 2020


  • TOM HOWARD PRIZE: $3,000 for a poem in any style or genre
  • MARGARET REID PRIZE: $3,000 for a poem that rhymes or has a traditional style

Length limit: 250 lines maximum per poem. No restriction on age of author. Authors from all countries eligible except Syria, Iran, North Korea, and Crimea (due to US government restrictions).
