About Love Festival of Short Plays

About Love festival of short plays that is held in June/July of each year and is open to all plays. 

The 2016 festival will be June 14 to June 18 at Vancouver’s storied Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, BC.

The goal of the festival is to provide encouragement for emerging playwrights and an opportunity for Vancouver area actors and directors to engage in new works on stage.

International submissions are accepted. Submissions must be in English.

There is a 10.00 Canadian dollars fee for submission of one script and 15.00 dollars for two scripts. There will be a 150.00 dollar prize to the winning playwright.

Submission Guidelines:

• The play should be approximately eight to twenty-minutes in length.

• The play must have no more than four on-stage characters.

• You may submit only up to two plays, so send us your best! If sending two. Please submit both in the same email.

• The play should be in a “play format” making it easy for the readers.

• The play must be unpublished and not have a professional production. (Professional production is one where actors, and all staff are paid. We accept Fringe as being non-professional)

• Submitting your play to our contest grants Tomo Suru Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.

• Does your play need to be about Love? As long as we can see a connection of love, romantic, familial, friendly, we can accept it.

About the fee:

• The fee covers the costs involved in the competition. We are hopeful we can return to a free contest in the future. If any writer wishes to submit a script, and feels the fee is a challenge to meet, please follow the submission guidelines below and put ATTN: Gerald Williams in the body of your email. He will be in touch.

• The play should have simple technical requirements.  Simple set, simple lighting and sound requirements.

• Surprise us, excite us! We are a diverse group and we are open to a variety of genre’s and styles.

What happens after you submit your play?

• Each play will be read by a reader, who will compile their own short list. A long list will then be compiled and a members committee will compile a short list.

• The short list scripts will be read in a long and joyful afternoon by all members of Tomo Suru, who will then choose the finalists.

• Directors will be assigned, there are open casting calls for actors, and your play will be produced.

• Finalists will receive 5 productions during our festival week. Audience votes will be collected during each performance and a final winner will be announced here by July 31st, 2016.

OUR WINTER CONTEST is open to all fiction and nonfiction writers. We’re looking for short shorts, short stories, essays, memoirs, photo essays, graphic stories, all forms of literary nonfiction, and excerpts from longer works of both fiction and nonfiction. Entries must be previously unpublished, no longer than 15,000 words, and must not have been previously chosen as a winner, finalist, or honorable mention in another contest.

Narrative winners and finalists have gone on to win the Pushcart Prize,the Whiting Writers’ Award, and the Atlantic prize, and have appeared in The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, and others. View all the recent awards won byNarrative authors.

As always, we are looking for works with a strong narrative drive, with characters we can respond to as human beings, and with effects of language, situation, and insight that are intense and total. We look for works that have the ambition of enlarging our view of ourselves and the world.

Last call! Creative Nonfiction Seeks Essays on “Learning from Nature”

For an upcoming issue, Creative Nonfiction is seeking new essays about LEARNING FROM NATURE.

The natural world has long been a source of inspiration. We’re interested in stories about how we learn from nature—whether it’s airlines developing boarding methods based on movement in ant colonies or aviation engineers studying eagles’ wings in order to build more aerodynamic planes; new-age fabric inspired by pine cones or energy-efficient skyscrapers modeled after termite mounds. We’re looking for well-crafted narratives that will illuminate the relationship between humans and the environment, particularly as we face the challenges of climate change.

Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with an informative or reflective element and reach beyond a strictly personal experience for some universal or deeper meaning. We’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice; all essays must tell true stories and be factually accurate.

The Biomimicry Center at Arizona State University will award $5,000 for best essay, and Creative Nonfiction editors will award $1,000 for runner-up. All essays will be considered for publication in a special “Learning from Nature” issue of the magazine to be published in fall 2016.

Guidelines:  Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,000 words. Multiple submissions are welcome, as are entries from outside the United States.

A note about fact-checking: Essays accepted for publication in Creative Nonfiction undergo a rigorous fact-checking process. To the extent your essay draws on research and/or reportage (and it should, at least to some degree), CNF editors will ask you to send documentation of your sources and to help with the fact-checking process. We do not require that citations be submitted with essays, but you may find it helpful to keep a file of your essay that includes footnotes and/or a bibliography.

Grants of up to $5,000 each are given in alternating years to Mississippi poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. This year the fellowships will be offered in poetry and fiction. Applicants must be permanent residents of Mississippi at the time of application and through the duration of the grant. Students enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program are ineligible. Using the online submission system, submit 15 to 20 pages of poetry or fiction, a résumé, a brief biography, and a writer’s statement by March 1. There is no entry fee. Project grants of up to $2,500 each are given twice yearly by the Leeway Foundation to women and transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, or otherwise gender-nonconforming poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers in the Delaware Valley region to fund art for social change projects. Writers living in Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia counties who are at least 18 years old and who are not full-time students in a degree-granting arts program are eligible. Applicants must identify a person, an organization, or a business as a partner for the project. Submit a project description and budget with the required entry form by March 1. There is no entry fee.
