Call for Submissions: 5th Annual Free 6-Month Fellowship to theOffice

Looking for a writer’s sanctuary? A place where you can leave the distractions of life behind and just sit down in peace to put words on the page? That’s what we offer here at theOffice – a quiet, communal workspace on the westside of Los Angeles. We have a roster filled with A-list screenwriters, novelists and more, but sometimes the cost of membership can be too much for up-and-coming writers. That’s why five years ago we started our free fellowship to theOffice. And we’re happy once again to offer it to you.

Announcing our 5th Annual Free 6-Month Fellowship to theOffice.

It works like this:

You send us an example of your best piece of writing along with a paragraph or two explaining why this fellowship would help you. We select one winner who will receive 6 months of free 24/7* access to the space. This is equivalent to a Premium Membership, the highest level of membership we offer, worth upwards of $2500. Winner gets his/her own door code to the space with the ability to come and go even when staff isn’t here. You wanna write at 2AM on a Wednesday night? The space is all yours. You also get all the other perks of membership including unlimited, free coffee & tea, wifi, ergonomic workstations with Aeron chairs, a small reference library and all the peace and quiet you can handle.

The fellowship starts May 1st and goes through October 31st, 2015. It is completely free to enter. Winner will be announced the last week of April. Contest is open to all new/aspiring/struggling writers who are looking to kick their productivity into overdrive.

Think of this as your very own writer’s retreat right here in the city.

Here’s what we need from you:

• An email with your contact information: Full name, phone, and email address. We will contact the winner via email.
• In the body of the email, please explain why you need this fellowship and what you hope to gain from it. (200 words or less, please)
• A 10 page .pdf writing sample of your work. Attach this to the email. Your best 10 pages. Do not submit pages that need to be set up or explained. Send 10 pages that stand alone. Only pdf submissions. All other attachments will be deleted.

Some important points to remember:

• Do your research on theOffice. Don’t submit if you’re not local, if you’re not sure you’ll be available, if you don’t like writing in a room with others. Be honest, if you live in Pasadena and won’t want to drive across town to write every day, then this fellowship isn’t for you. If you don’t flourish in a quiet space, skip it. We want this to be of major value to the winner.Serious submissions only please.

• If you’ve never been to theOffice and would like to try it out before submitting, please do! You’re welcome to do the FREE WEEK. Just be sure to call first for availability. Contact info here. More photos of the space here.

• The field is open to ALL new writers. Submit 10 pages of your screenplay, play, short story, novel, memoir, poem, article etc. We’ll read it all.

• By “new writers” we mean you can have no feature film credits as a writer on IMDb (short films are okay) and no more than 1 hour of television credit as a writer on IMDb. For fiction writers, we just want to make sure you’re not someone with a three book deal and money to spare. Key words here are new/aspiring/struggling.

• DEADLINE to enter is April 15th, 2015. No submissions accepted past midnight PST.

• You must have sole writing credit for the sample pages you submit. This fellowship is for one (1) free membership and is non-transferrable.

Our 14th annual Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest welcomes your entry through April 1, 2015. There’s no fee to enter. Jendi Reiter will judge, assisted by Lauren Singer. We’ll award $2,000 in prizes, including a top prize of $1,000. Winners are published on our website.

After screening last year’s 4,484 entries, Lauren has advice for this year’s contestants:

Parodies based on Poe, “The Night Before Christmas”, Yeats, and Frost: If you are going to have a “With Apologies To…” poem, it needs to be clever enough to back up the fact that it is based on a famous original. So many of these poets jumped ship somewhere in the middle and did not utilize any clever parodying qualities, and merely wrote poems that were completely separate from the originals. Just stealing the voice of a dead poet does not a good poem make!

Poems that I found particularly arduous to read: Poems about pooping, farting, vomiting, getting fat, having saggy boobs, tricking your husband so that he would stay with you, tricking your wife so that she would leave you, wrinkles, chocolate addiction, unoriginal limericks that began “There once was a man from Nantucket” that ended with “f*** it!”, poems that invented their own language without a glossary and just translated as wan gibberish.

Poems that were offensive: Ones that embraced a pro-rape culture (there were more of these than you might think, and it was quite disheartening); poems that described women as objects; poems that led the reader to believe they were about women and then turned into poems about an object (odes to a car, boat, La-Z-Boy, golf club, burger, guitar, etc.); homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, racist poems, of which there were many; poems that mock a lifestyle in attempts to undermine it (making light of stay-at-home moms/dads, that sort of thing); poems that made light of mental illness, addiction, and recovery, in an offensive way as opposed to a self-deprecatingly humorous way.

“I’m getting so old” poems: These were by far the highest number of poems submitted in 2014. These have the ability to be funny, but more often than not there is SO much overlap. “I used to be so attractive, thin, energetic. Now I’m fat, wrinkly, and don’t have sex. I can’t bend over anymore, I can’t sit up without grunting, I can’t eat fried foods, I can’t enjoy life because I’m over 60.” These become tiring and disheartening after a while. There were a few that embraced an original voice and those made the cut, but the vast majority of poems about aging were nearly indistinguishable from each other.

Feeling squirrelly: There were well over a hundred poems solely about squirrels. This is merely a side note, as some of them were quite funny, but out of sheer curiosity, what the hell was it about squirrels this year? What is this obsession? Why are squirrels so dang poetic? Any squirrel poems that ended in a pun about nuts generally didn’t make the cut.

Eduardo C. Corral is a CantoMundo fellow. He holds degrees from Arizona State University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His poems have appeared in Best American Poetry 2012, Beloit Poetry Journal, Huizache, Jubilat, New England Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, Poetry Northwest, and Quarterly West. His work has been honored with a “Discovery”/The Nation Award, the J. Howard and Barbara M. J. Wood Prize from Poetry, and writing residencies to the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. He has served as the Olive B. O’Connor Fellow in Creative Writing at Colgate University and as the Philip Roth Resident in Creative Writing at Bucknell University. Slow Lightning, his first book of poems, was selected by Carl Phillips as the 2011 winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. The recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, he currently lives in New York City.

The Radiant Peace Education Awards program gives students an opportunity to express themselves about Radiant Peace in their own lives in essays, art, videos and projects.

What to Enter

Adult, young adult (YA) and middle grade (MG) novels, novellas, and short story collections are accepted. Minimum word count: 22,000. Individual stories in a collection may have been published in journals. Books that have been self-published will be considered “:unpublished” if fewer than about 200 copies were printed.

We look for literary fiction and mainstream fiction, including science fiction. Generally we are less interested in strict genre fiction, but if a manuscript is good and grabs our attention, we don’t care what the genre is.

How to Enter

All entries must be submitted by email to fictioncontest@leapfrogpress.com . Subject line: “Contest entry Book Title–adult novel.” Use your actual manuscript title or part of it, and indicate whether it is a novel, story collection, novella, YA novel, or MG novel. If you are unsure whether it is for adults or young adults, or should be called a novel or a novella, just take a guess. We are not picky about category.

In the body of your email message, please include your name, complete manuscript title, mailing address, and email address. Please do not include any biographical information. Indicate whether your entry fee will be coming by check or via PayPal/credit card. This helps us match PayPal payments to manuscripts.

Attach your complete manuscript to your message as a Word or PDF file. Please REMOVE any identifying information from the file before sending: no author name or address should be included. This includes information in page headers/footers, title pages, and so forth. If you forget, don’t worry: we’ll remove the information before the manuscript reaches the judges.

We ask that you do not attach a file greater than bout 1.5 MB. If this is a problem, please contact us. You may send larger files by Hightail or some other file-sharing system, but we need to know in advance if you are doing so. However, there is no reason for any manuscript file to exceed a couple of MB at the most. If yours does, it has illustrations that need to be removed or made smaller (lower resolution).

Ploughshares Emerging Writer’s Contest

In the spirit of the journal’s founding mission,

the Ploughshares Emerging Writer’s Contest recognizes

work by an emerging writer in each of three genres:

fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

One winner in each genre per year will receive $1,000

and publication in the literary journal. 

We consider writers “emerging” if they have not published

or self-published a book.

The London Magazine’s Poetry Competition 2015

The London Magazine has been home to the likes of Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Christopher Reid, Helen Dunmore and many more. We are on the hunt for new talent – unpublished poems from across the world. 

This is a fantastic opportunity for writers across the world to get published in the most prestigious literary journal in the UK plus winning a cash prize. First prize wins £200 and publication the magazine, whilst second and third prize win £150 and £100 respectively, with all three poems being published on our website. Poems will be judged by Holly Howitt-Dring and Tristam Fay Saunders.

Legendary Women Literary Contest 2015

The Citron Review Poetry Contest

We are excited to announce The Citron Review 2015 Poetry Contest!
 
The contest calls for poems in the spirit of Carl Sandburg. There is an entry fee of $10. Send us three to five poems that you feel channel his spirit. Our normal line limits (30 lines per poem) still apply. The winner will receive $250, publication and mention in The Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara newsletter. Three other finalists will receive publication alongside the winning poem.
