New Works Festival

Two categories

One-Act Scripts and Ten-Minute Plays

Winners will receive a staged reading by professional actors

during Festival 56, Illinois’ largest summer theatre festival.

The New Works Festival will also include a playwrights’ reception

and opportunities to receive feedback of the winning works.

No entry fee — No cash prizes

Timetable

• Submission deadline: 1 March 2017
• Winners will be notified by 1 May 2017
• Production dates: August 4 and 5 2017

Competition Rules

• Only complete scripts will be considered; no excerpts from longer works.
• Scripts must be original, unpublished, and not previously produced.
• Each playwright may submit only one script per category. It is possible for a playwright to win in both categories.
• Competition is open to adult playwrights around the English-speaking world. No juvenile writers.
• Target audience: adults, including young adults.
• Genre: comedy, drama, tragedy, farce, hybrid; theatrical storytelling. No monologues, children’s plays, adaptations, or musicals.
• Cast may contain any number of characters of any race, ethnicity, or gender.
• Theme and subject matter are open; however, excessively strong language is discouraged.
• Winners will grant Festival 56 and Princeton Theatre Group first production rights. Playwrights retain copyright.
• At least one One-Act and up to six Ten-Minute scripts will be selected for staged readings. Total number of winners will depend upon the number and range of submissions.
• The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not provide any written or verbal critiques.
• Winning playwrights are strongly encouraged to attend their readings, although attendance is not a requirement for winning. If the playwright is present, a talkback with the audience and actors will immediately follow the reading of each script.

Criteria for selection

• Well developed storyline within a short work
• Natural and creative dialogue
• Quality of writing and dramatic structure
• Ability of script to connect with an audience

Submission Guidelines

• Type script with 1-inch margins on all four edges, using a 12-point serif type such as Times New Roman, Palatino, or Courier.
• Use standard script format including cast of characters, setting, etc.
• Do NOT put your real name on your script! On the first page of the script, under the title, put a pen name of your choice.
  Use the script title as the name of this document.
• Create a separate document giving your real name, address, email, phone, the title of your script, and either your real age or the statement “I am over 18.”
  Use your pen name as the name of this document.
  This document will not be opened until after winners have been selected.
• Attach both the script document and the identifying document to an email as a Word doc, Pages doc, or PDF.
• Send One-Act entries to Festival56oneact@gmail.com by 1 March 2017.
  Send Ten-Minute entries to Festival56tenmin@gmail.com by 1 March 2017.

Black Caucus of the American Library Association Literary Awards

Deadline December 16, 2016 (must be received by this date). Recommended free contest awards four prizes of $500 for books of fiction, nonfiction, first novel, and poetry written by an African-American and published in the US during the current year. The awards honor books that depict the “cultural, historical, or sociopolitical aspects of the African Diaspora”. Must be nominated by the publisher. BCALA presents four monetary awards: one for adult fiction, one for nonfiction, one for a first novel, and one for poetry. These awards acknowledge outstanding achievement in the presentation of the cultural, historical, and sociopolitical aspects of the Black Diaspora.

– The Fiction Award recognizes depictions of sensitive and authentic personal experience either within the framework of contemporary literary standards and themes or which explore innovative literary formats.

The winner’s face will appear on the front cover of the To Hull & Back Anthology. They will be depicted riding a flaming motorcycle and holding a quill of wrath. The covers from previous competitions can be seen below. Each year, the cover will be unique and created by a different artist.

But it doesn’t end there.

The winner will also receive a printed copy of the anthology. Before being sent to them, their book will be strapped to the handlebars of a two-wheeled chariot of delight (otherwise known as a Harley Davidson FLSTFi Fatboy 1584cc V-Twin motorcycle) and filmed being ridden to Hull and back.

Entry fee:

• There is an ‘early bird’ entry fee from 1st August to 30th April. It is a £7 (seven pounds GBP) entry fee for 1 (one) entry, a £12 (twelve pounds GBP) entry fee for 2 (two) entries and a £15 (fifteen pounds GBP) entry fee for 3 (three) entries.
• The ‘early bird’ entry fee closes at 11.59pm GMT on 30th April. From 1st May the entry fee will be £9 (nine pounds GBP) entry fee for 1 (one) entry, £15 (fifteen pounds GBP) entry fee for 2 (two) entries and a £18 (eighteen pounds GBP) entry fee for 3 (three) entries.
• Please pay BEFORE sending your entry.

Key Dates

Entries will be accepted from the 1st August 2016 to the 31st of July 2017!

There is an ‘early bird’ entry fee in place until 30th April 2017: £7 for 1 story, £12 for 2 stories, £15 for 3 stories.

From 1st May 2017 to 31st July 2017, the entry fee increases to: £9 for 1 story, £15 for 2 stories, £18 for 3 stories. I’ve put the ‘early bird’ fee in place because in 2016 I received approximately 60% of the entries in the final month. As the number of entries goes up every year, I hope the ‘early bird’ fee will encourage people to enter earlier so reading all the stories and preparing the shortlist is more manageable.

The competition closes to entries at 11.59pm GMT (Greenwich meantime, the time in London, UK) on 31st July 2017. The competition is run annually, so stories received after this deadline will be entered into next year’s competition, which opens immediately after the current contest closes.

The shortlist will be announced on this website by 20th September 2017.

Winners will be contacted by email or telephone by 30th September 2017 and announced on this website, celebrated and generally adored by 1st October 2017.

Prize money will be paid to winners via PayPal in October 2017.

The fourth ‘To Hull and Back Anthology’ will be released on 31st October 2017. ‘Hulloween’ seems like an appropriate launch date…

The winner’s book will be taken to Hull and back during spring 2018 (usually around March/April), weather permitting. Shortly afterwards the winner’s copy of the anthology will be delivered to them and the video of the book’s journey will be made available on YouTube, Facebook and this website.

Description

At the confluence of the West and the East, Hourglass Literary Magazine proudly announces its second international writing competition for – Best Short Story, Best Poem, Best Essay.

– Jury/Judges: Sibelan Forrester, Jelena Lengold and John K. Cox.
– The competition is international and is open to all authors writing in English or any of the BCMS languages (comprising Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin.)
– There are no theme, or genre limitations and boundaries.
– Short stories, essays and poems by writers who write in English will be translated in one of the BCMS languages and vice versa.
– Participants retain the copyright of their works.
– Work must be original and unpublished.

THE FICTION DESK GHOST STORY COMPETITION

Most of the stories we publish at The Fiction Desk are more or less realistic, but we try to stray outside that from time to time: Some genre fiction should be part of any balanced reading diet. One genre that we particularly like to feature is the ghost story. This year, there is a first prize of £500, a second prize of £250, and a third prize of £100.

The deadline is Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

All stories must be written in English, and be entirely the author’s own work. All entrants must be aged 16 or over at the time of entry; there is no upper age limit. Entries must be between 1,000 and 7,000 words in length.

Be it historical or contemporary, a grand love story or the gripping tale of a torrid affair,

2017 Past-Year Memoir Contest

Gotham invites you to look back at 2016 and write about it. 

Specifically, we want you to tell us a true story from your life in 2016…in only 16 words. (You can use a title, but that will count toward your word limit.)

We want a personal story from your life, which can be hilarious, heartbreaking, puzzling, uplifting, or just plain strange. Look for something intriguing, perhaps something with emotional or intellectual resonance. It’s fine if you want to include current events from the year, as long as it’s mostly about you, or how you feel about it.
