Guidelines:

Write a poem, 30 lines or fewer on any subject, style, or form, typed or neatly hand printed.

And/or write a short story, 5 pages maximum length, on any subject or theme. Genres: fiction, nonfiction or creative nonfiction (including essay compositions, diary, journal entries and screenwriting). Also, all entries must be either typed or neatly hand printed.

C&R Press is open for full length manuscripts

C&R Press is open for full length manuscripts in all categories for our 2017-18 catalog. Novels, poetry, short story collections, creative non-fiction, memoir, experimental and hybrid work. 

C&R Press submissions are open for our Winter Soup Bowl Chapbook and New York reading series. 

C&R Press is engaging more than ever in our community, seeking diverse and submerged voices, hosting readings and events at festivals from the Brooklyn Book Festival and the Miami Book Festival, to Sewanee and the Texas Book Festival, to off-site gatherings at AWP. (Next Spontaneous Literary Mixer is 9/16/17 in NYC – Concrete&Water). 

C&R has never held a formal reading period. We accept work that will hold people’s attention for years to come. It’s true that not all submitted work can be taken for publication, but please know each contribution helps support our cause (we’re poets and writers, too!)—which is to celebrate and promote literature. The funds created by the reading period go toward one goal: the creation of author-friendly contract models and opportunities to market and promote essential literature.

Entries to our Summer “Tide Pool” Chapbook Series are open from the Summer Solstice (June 21) to the Autumnal Equinox (Sept 22). 

In Spring 2018 C&R Press will publish 1-3 chapbooks of poetry, short stories, or other types of literary or mixed work. Summer Tide Pool Chapbooks of poetry are between 20-40 pages, and chapbooks of fiction, creative nonfiction, essays and mixed work are between 25-60 pages not including front matter. There are entry fees. Manuscript authors selected for publication receive ten copies of the book, $100 dollars and a reading in New York City. 

We are looking for work that is developed, polished, and has a strong singular voice. We encourage emerging and established authors in the manuscript process to submit their best work.

THE NEW GUARD CONTESTS IN FICTION & POETRY

TNG Volume VII contests in fiction & poetry are in full swing. The New Guard Vol VII Machigonne Fiction Contest Judge is the Edgar Prize-winning Chris Abani and our Vol VII Knightville Poetry Contest Judge is the National Book Award-winning poet, Mark Doty.

KNIGHTVILLE POETRY CONTEST: $1,500 and publication for an exceptional poem in any form. Up to three poems per entry. Up to 150 lines per poem. Please submit all three poems in a single document. TNG Vol VII Judge: MARK DOTY. $20 entry fee.

MACHIGONNE FICTION CONTEST: $1,500 and publication for an exceptional work of fiction in any genre. Submit up to 5,000 words: anything from flash to the long story. TNG Vol VII Judge: CHRIS ABANI.  $20 entry fee.

THE NEW GUARD CONTEST GUIDELINES

Please submit a word document or PDF. International entries are welcome.  Simultaneous submissions are accepted, provided we’re notified upon publication elsewhere. Entrants have no submission entry limit. Each submission is carefully considered for publication. Please include your name on the first page of your contest entry. We will remove your name in the final stages of judging. Final judging is done blind, by that volume’s appointed judges.

We do pay strict attention to word and line count. Please submit previously unpublished work only. Any size print run or online publication (including blogs and/or social networking or video readings) disqualify an entry. Please note that we do not publish illustrations. We no longer accept entries via postal mail.

Finalists and semi-finalists receive one free copy of The New Guard; winners receive two copies. Winners and selected finalists and semi-finalists will be published in our print publication. TNG is not published online.

ABOUT THE NEW GUARD 

The New Guard is a contest-centered, independent literary review, publishing 35+ emerging writers each year. We proudly publish in print, with the exception of our online feature, BANG!, a page on this site that publishes three short works by a single writer for a full month at a time. Our Volume VII contests in Fiction & Poetry, judged by Chris Abani and Mark Doty, are open until August 31, 2017 (midnight in your country).

The New Guard is here to showcase newcomers alongside established writers, and to juxtapose tradition with experiment to create a new dialogue. We publish all finalists and semi-finalists of our contests in our print-only journals, and we strive to feature at least forty debut writers in each issue. The Writer’s Hotel and MFA in A Day make up the editorial arm of The New Guard literary review. Via The Writer’s Hotel, we host a conference in NYC each June, The Writer’s Hotel NYC Writers Conference and we also work with writers to develop their writing via our online component, Private Study. We are writers for writers’ sake.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 2017 FELLOWSHIP TO THEOFFICE

It works like this:

You send us a sample of your best piece of writing along with a short email explaining why this fellowship is right for you. Our judges select one winner who will receive 6 months of free 24/7* access to the space. This is equivalent to a Premium Membership, the highest level of membership we offer, worth upwards of $2700. The winner gets a private door code to access the space even when staff isn’t here. You wanna write at 2AM on a Wednesday night? The space is all yours. You also get all the other perks of membership including free coffee/tea, Wifi, Aeron workstations and all the peace and quiet you need to get the job done.

This year’s fellowship starts September 1st and goes through February 28th, 2018. It is completely free to enter. The winner will be announced the last week of August. Mark Cullen
A Hollywood vet and longtime member here at theOffice, Mark is the creator of numerous TV shows including Mr. Robinson (with Craig Robinson), Back in the Game (James Caan), Heist, Gary the Rat(Kelsey Grammer) and Lucky (John Corbett). He also co-wrote the feature Cop Out (with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan).

Nicole LaPorte
Nicole is a contributing writer for Fast Company magazine, where she writes about entertainment business and technology. She was formerly a Senior West Coast reporter for Newsweek/The Daily Beast, and a monthly columnist for the New York Times Sunday Business section. She’s also the author of The Men Who Would Be King: Moguls, Movies and a Company called DreamWorks.

David Scarpa
David’s screenplay All the Money in the World made the 2015 Blacklist and is currently filming with Ridley Scott at the helm, starring Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Spacey and Michelle Williams. Other screenwriting credits include The Day the Earth Stood Still (Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates) and The Last Castle (Robert Redford, James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo).

Pretty cool, right? Okay, so here’s what we need from you…

2. In the body of the email, please briefly explain why you want this fellowship and what you hope to gain from it.

Some important points to remember:

• Do your research on theOffice. Don’t submit if you’re not local, if you’re not sure you’ll be available, if you don’t like writing in a room with others. If you live across town and hate the commute, this isn’t right for you. If you don’t flourish in a quiet space, skip it. For authors, we just want to make sure you’re not someone with a three book deal and money to spare. This is for new/aspiring/struggling writers only.

Ruminate Magazine announces the 2018 VanderMey Nonfiction Prize

Deadline: November 15, 2017

First place winner will receive a $1500 cash prize along with publication. Runner-up recipient will receive $200 cash prize and publication. The prize is open to all forms of nonfiction; no geographical restrictions. $20 Entry fee also includes a complimentary copy of the prize issue.
