Call for submissions: Christopher Fielden’s Writing Challenges

24 January 2017

Adverb Challenge:
We sold 101 copies of Adverbially Challenged Volume 1 on the run up to Christmas, so we donated £101 to First Story at the beginning of January. The charity asked me to say a big thank you to everyone involved. If you haven’t purchased your copy yet, you can do so here.
We’ve almost reached the next milestone – 200 submitted stories. This means Adverbially Challenged Volume 2 will go into production soon. If you want to be in the book, you can submit your stories here. Be quick – there are only a few spaces left.

Nonsense Challenge
We’re also over halfway to our goal of 100 stories for the first nonsense challenge anthology. There have been some amazing submissions so far. You can read them and submit your own stories on the nonsense challenge page.

Sensory Overload Challenge
This is a new challenge, conceived by Allen Ashley. We’ll be launching it in March 2017. You can learn a bit more about it (and see a wonderful photo of me and Allen that definitely hasn’t been anywhere near Photoshop) on the main writing challenges page.

Preposition Challenge
This is another new challenge, conceived by Ville Nummenpää. We’ll be launching that one later in the year. Again, see the main writing challenges page for details.

42 Miles Press Poetry Award

24 January 2017

42 Miles Press Poetry Award

David Dodd Lee

Deadline: March 1, 2017

Judge: David Dodd Lee, Series Editor

The 42 Miles Press Poetry Award was created in an effort to bring fresh and original voices to the poetry reading public. The prize is offered annually to any poet writing in English, including poets who have never published a full-length book as well as poets who have published several. New and Selected collections of poems are also welcome.

Manuscripts submitted for the 42 Miles Press Poetry Award should exhibit an awareness of the contemporary “voice” in American poetry, an awareness of our moment in time as poets. We are excited to receive poetry that is experimental as well as work of a more formalist bent, as long as it reflects a complexity and sophistication of thought and language.

Urgency, yes; melodrama, not so much.

The winning poet will receive $1,000, publication of his or her book, and 50 author copies. The winner will also be invited to give a reading at Indiana University South Bend as part of the release of the book. The final selection will be made by the Series Editor. Current or former students or employees of Indiana University South Bend, as well as friends of the Series Editor, are not eligible for the prize.

Winners will be announced via our website in the summer of 2017. We will also announce the winner in major magazines such as Poets & Writers. The winning book will be published in September 2018 and be available to purchase on SPD and Amazon. Previous 42 Miles Press publications include books by Allan Peterson, Betsy Andrews, Bill Rasmovicz, Carrie Oeding, Erica Bernheim, Kimberly Lambright, Nate Pritts, Tracey Knapp, and Christine Garren.

See the complete guidelines and submit by mail or email.

Dangerous Creations: Real-life Frankenstein Stories

12 January 2017

Deadline: March 20, 2017

In the summer of 1816, in response to a challenge from friends to write the most terrifying possible ghost story, the young Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley dreamed up the story of a young scientist and his monstrous creation. The “Frankenstein monster” has fascinated the imagination ever since.

In conjunction with the ASU Frankenstein Bicentennial Project, Creative Nonfiction magazine is daring writers (as Mary Shelley was dared in Geneva) to write original and groundbreaking stories in the spirit of Frankenstein—but nonfiction. That is to say, we’re looking for true stories that explore humans’ efforts to control and redirect nature, the evolving relationships between humanity and science/technology, and contemporary interpretations of monstrosity.

Essays must be vivid and dramatic; they should combine a strong and compelling narrative with an informative or reflective element and reach beyond a strictly personal experience for some universal or deeper meaning. We’re open to a broad range of interpretations of the “Frankenstein” theme, with the understanding that all works submitted must tell true stories and be factually accurate. Above all, we’re looking for well-written prose, rich with detail and a distinctive voice.

Creative Nonfiction editors and a judge (to be announced) will award $10,000 and publication for Best Essay and two $2,500 prizes and publication for runners-up. All essays will be considered for publication in the winter 2018 issue of the magazine.

Guidelines:  Essays must be previously unpublished and no longer than 4,000 words. There is a $20 reading fee, waived for current subscribers. You can also submit and become a subscriber, extend your subscription, or give a gift subscription by submitting $25 to include a 4-issue subscription to Creative Nonfiction (US addresses only). Multiple entries are welcome ($20/essay) as are entries from outside the United States (though due to shipping costs we cannot offer the subscription deal).

A note about fact-checking: Essays accepted for publication in Creative Nonfiction undergo a rigorous fact-checking process. To the extent your essay draws on research and/or reportage (and it should, at least to some degree), editors will ask you to send documentation of your sources and to help with the fact-checking process. We do not require that citations be submitted with essays, but you may find it helpful to keep a file of your essay that includes footnotes and/or a bibliography.

You may submit essays online or by regular mail:

By regular mail:

Postmark deadline March 20, 2017

Please send manuscript, accompanied by cover letter with complete contact information including the title of the essay and word count; SASE or email for response; and payment to:

TheNextBigWriter – Locked Room Mystery Writing Contest

12 January 2017

The challenge of this contest is to write a locked room mystery that takes place somewhere other than earth, where one of the main characters is either deaf, dumb, or blind.

Don’t know what a locked room mystery is?  A locked room mystery is one in which the perpetrator commits a crime, usually a murder, under circumstances which seem impossible. For instance, a murder is committed in a room that is locked with no windows. How did the perpetrator get into the room? How could the crime be committed? In locked room mysteries there is usually a crime scene with no indication of how the perpetrator could have entered or exited, or committed the crime. For more of an explanation, as well as examples, please visit the following links:

The Writer: “YOUR TURN” Essay Writing Contest

3 January 2017

To celebrate our 130th year in print, we’re opening up our pages to our readers. Our “Your Turn” essay contests asks readers to write a 2,000-word essay about any aspect of the writing life. Any topic is fair game, so long as it pertains to some aspect of writing.  You only have until February 25th, 2016 to enter!

Deadline: February 25th, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. EST

Grand prize: $1,000 and publication in our magazine. However, every essay we receive will be considered for paid publication in The Writer.

Word count: 2,000 words or less

Not the writing contest for you? Sign up for our newsletter to be the first to hear when we launch a new one.

Guidelines:

The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. eastern time on February 25th, 2017. Please note that the deadline is eastern standard time. If you are unsure when that would be in your time zone, we recommend using an online time zone converter, such as thetimezoneconverter.com. Every year, we receive emails from writers who waited until the last minute to enter and experienced a technical glitch or another emergency. To be safe, we recommend submitting before the final deadline to account for any problems, especially since our staff is out of the office on weekends. If you do experience a technical problem, contact customerservice@madavor.com and we will do our very best to help you.

• The entry fee is $25 (including processing fees). All entries MUST be submitted through Submittable to be considered. We cannot accept mailed or emailed submissions.

• We encourage you to submit multiple essays – for a discounted entry fee of $15. All entries must be submitted on the same transaction in order to get the discounted rate. The first submission will be $25 and each additional submission (up to 5 per transaction) will be $15.

• While we enjoy good writing in all forms, our magazine is strictly about writing and publishing, as either a career, a passion, a craft, or a lifestyle. No matter how strong an essay may be, if it does not somehow tie into some aspect of writing, we most likely will not be able to find a place for it in our magazine. For examples of the types of essays we accept, look to essays we’ve published in our magazine and on writermag.com.

• You may enter simultaneously submitted work.

• This is an essay (nonfiction) contest. Do not submit short stories, poetry, or other works of fiction. Do not submit any work over 2000 words or it will be disqualified.

Please remove your name, bio and any contact info from the file that you submit – including title page, header and footer. This is a blind contest and your confidentiality is essential. Once we close the contest and determine our winners, Submittable will allow us to contact you via your account information. There is no need whatsoever to include your personal information in your document.

• A blind reading of all entries will be conducted by the editorial staff of The Writer.

• $1,000 and publication in the June 2017 issue will be awarded to the winner.

• Close friends and colleagues (current & former) of the The Writer staff and Madavor Media are not eligible to compete.

• All submissions must be submitted and paid for via our online submission form manager. Again, we will not accept mail or email submissions.

• We prefer Word documents, but we do accept some other file types (such as PDFs).

• All submissions must be previously unpublished.

• Entry fees are non-refundable.

• International (non-US) writers are welcome to submit.

• Must be 18 years or older to enter.
