New Call for Cross-Genre Travel Writing!

13 October 2014

Here is a little blurb about our journal:

This is not so much a journal as a collaborative literary geography of the places we’ve read about, and subsequently visited.
We live thousands of lives through the pages of our beloved books, and sometimes we are blessed with the luck of being able to physically visit the spaces occupied by our fictional friends (or foes). This is a place to discover those spaces; and perhaps find a new one or two near you.
If you know of a destination or landmark that can be found in a book, or you have a sneaking suspicion of one, please, submit to us your encounter. Give us your thoughts, feelings, even pictures. The strange, funny, sad, and silly are all welcome here.

And here is a description of what we are looking for specifically:

Any piece published on this site must contain two things:
1. It must contain a physical place.
2. It must contain a specific geographical point from an actual book, author, genre, or period of writing.
I am looking for engaging, touching, funny, soulful, sad, silly, enchanting, and interesting pieces about the interactions between the fictional books we love (and the people that wrote them) and the places they wrote about, the places they wrote in, or the places they wished existed which now exist.
The only exception to this is literary landmarks that stand on their own such as libraries.
Preferably posts would come with pictures, but it is not necessary.

Call for Submissions: The Multiple eXposure Project Zine 1.0

13 October 2014

Attention writers, researchers, photographers, visual artists, and image-makers!

The Multiple eXposure Project is a multimedia, multi/trans/inter-disciplinary artistic practice and research-based initiative that explores the many layers of image-making, participatory photography, visual ethnography, and performative encounter(s) between the image and the spectator.

We are happy to announce that we will be publishing the very first issue of our collaborative zine and we are now accepting submissions until December 31, 2014.

The theme of our upcoming zine is “Self-as-Subject”, an exploration of the “self” and its manifold permutations – its presence, identity, representation, liminality, and (dis)embodiment – in this day and age of digital madness, hyperreality and mobility.

The zine is multimedia so we are accepting text and image-based submissions related to the theme in any format imaginable such as: articles, essays, reviews, short stories, poetry, interviews, photographs (film or analogue), visual narratives, videos, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, mixed media, collages, experimental pieces, etc. Collaborative projects are very much welcome. Multiple entries are also accepted. Digital and printed copies of the zine will be released.

Some notes to remember:

–   Please include your name, short profile, country of origin, and blog/website (if applicable) in your email.

–   Photo submissions in jpeg format must include a title and description.

–   When necessary, please follow the proper citations (MLA style) in article submissions.

Please email your submissions to themultipleexposureproject@gmail.com.

For more information on The Multiple eXposure Project, check out our website: http://www.themultipleexposureproject.co.nr

Writing Guest Blogging: Daily (w)rite A Daily Ritual of Writing

12 October 2014

Guest Post Guidelines

The guidelines might change with time, but so far this is what I request. I realize the list is long, but it is essential in order to avoid misunderstandings and time-wasting down the road. I respect your time and effort, and this is a good way to ensure neither is wasted. The following requirements are also valid for guest interviews.
General Guidelines:
•  Your post must be original and must not have been published before on the web.
•  You agree to not publish the post anywhere else for 3 months after it is published on this blog, to maintain its uniqueness.
•  The guest posts need to be related to reading, writing, publishing, inspirational, or self-improvement/ lifestyle topics, as that is what this blog is about.
•  You may include two links in the byline, which will be displayed at the bottom of the post, and one link inside the post linking back to your blog/ content.
•  Please include a bio, so readers can get to know you better, and add your Twitter handle, if you have one. Your own picture would be nice, but it is optional. These would help me feature you on my Guest Blogger page, dedicated to all the writers who have guested on my blogs.
•  Please send in an accompanying image that is relevant to the post, and is not so heavy that I have to resize it.
•  Please ensure that the post is well-edited, readable, and written in good English.

Promotion Guidelines
•  Talk about the guest post at your blog and on Twitter or any other social media, so the post you write gets comments from your regular readers. I’ll do the same, but I’ll notice if you do not make any effort to promote your own post.
•  Stick to a word count of up to 400 words to ensure that you hold the readers’ attention. A well-thought-out title would attract more visitors, which is after all what this is all about: providing you more exposure.
•  Ensure that you’re available to interact with readers who comment on your post.
Formatting Guidelines
•  Make sure to include the author byline at the bottom, with the link to your website, twitter links etc. already formatted.
•  Make sure the paragraphs are short, for easy reading. Bullet points welcome.
Submission Guidelines
·      Before you submit a guest post, please check with me about the topic etc so I can tell you if it has been covered recently, or is not relevant to the blog. This should be done at least a month before you want the post to appear.
·      I do not support overt advertisements, unless it is to promote an author’s book: fiction, or related to publishing fiction in some way.
·      You can send the post to me on the email atozstories at gmail dot com. Please include the post in the body of the email itself, or as a .doc attachment. It is helpful if you add the link to your site/blog on all your mails, so I can easily find what to promote.
·      Usually within 2-3 days of receiving it, I’ll reply stating what date the post will be up.
·      The guest post should be with me at least four days before the date of publication, so I can schedule it correctly, and in some cases, run it by you, to check everything looks right.
·      I would mostly feature regular followers of my blog or authors I have interacted with before, so any outside blog tours must discuss a possible guest post or interview with me about two months in advance.

I’ll make exceptions to some of these guidelines as and when necessary, but that depends entirely on the circumstances. Any questions, tweet me up@damyantig, or mail me at atozstories at gmail dot com.
Visit http://damyantiwrites.wordpress.com/guest-bloggers-on-amlokiblogs/  the Guest Bloggers page for examples of acceptable writing submission. No spam or commercial advertisement whatsoever!
Visit the website:  http://damyantiwrites.wordpress.com/

About the writer:

Damyanti is an established freelance writer who wants to try out an experiment. She has an ambition of writing something everyday, something that could be long or short, on any topic whatsoever, but always imaginative and meaningful.

She is also trying to figure out a way to step into fiction: a field she has touched before, but never professionally. She has been published in QLRS, and her stories have been included in different anthologies by Twelve Winters Press, USA , Monsoon Press Singapore, Marshall Cavendish Singapore , MPH Malaysia and others.

‘At War’ Poetry Competition

11 October 2014
‘At War’ Poetry Competition (Free entry)
Arts Award Voice is an online magazine created by young people, for young people interested in the arts (artsawardvoice.com). As nations across the globe mark one hundred years since the beginning of the First World War, Arts Award Voice are excited to have launched a poetry-writing competition that will encourage writers to engage with the centenary in a creative way.
We are asking young people aged 11-22 to submit original poems on the theme ‘At War’. The competition deadline is November 11th 2014 – Remembrance Day.
The competition is open to two age categories, 11-16 and 17-22, and the judges are looking forward to reading poems from a wide range of young people. The prize includes a National Art Pass, and feedback from the judges for the winning poems – an invaluable opportunity for any budding writers. We will also publish a selection of poems in an e-book which will have a small print run, and winners will each receive a copy.
Arts Award Voice is delighted that Joelle Taylor, Kat Francois and Caroline Bray have agreed to judge the competition.
Joelle Taylor is a spoken word artist and poet, and Founder and Artistic Director of SLAMbassadors UK, the Poetry Society’s national youth slam championship. She worked alongside Caroline Bray (Arts Award Museums, Heritage and Libraries Associate) with Bronze Arts Award students recently on a project which saw them writing poetry inspired by First World War objects and stories from The British Postal Museum and Archive, before performing their work at the Roundhouse in Camden.
Kat Francois is a performance poet. She is the 2005 World Slam Champion and a resident poet at Theatre Royal, Stratford East. She has also written and performed a one-woman play called Raising Lazarus, charting the journey of West Indian soldiers who came to fight for Britain during the First World War.
The potential of this poetry competition is far reaching; as Joelle Taylor notes, reading the poetry of young people it “like listening to thoughts from the future. I believe that poetry can affect positive change in the world, and even that these poems can help us erase war and find peaceful ways to end conflict. I can’t wait to read them.”
Entries should be sent to voice@artsaward.org.uk, along with name, age and email address. All questions and queries regarding this competition can also be sent to voice@artsaward.org.uk.

2104 Walker Percy Prize in Short Fiction

11 October 2014

The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. —Walker Percy

We are looking for well-crafted, dynamic writing that demonstrates attention to the language, writing that engages, surprises, and moves us. We subscribe to the belief that in order to truly write well, one must master the basics: grammar and syntax, punctuation, diction, the sentence, the paragraph. Beyond that, we are looking for writing that has something honest to say about human experience—writing that, in the spirit of Walker Percy, is onto something.

Winner receives $1,000 and publication in New Orleans Review. All finalists considered for publication.

Enter previously unpublished original stories up to 7,500 words. The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript. Entries may be simultaneous submissions but the entry fee is nonrefundable if the story is accepted elsewhere. Please notify us immediately to withdraw a story that is taken elsewhere. There is no limit on the number of entries you may submit.

Contest open to all writers in English with the exception of current students or employees or others affiliated with New Orleans Review or Loyola University New Orleans. Writers who have a strong personal or professional relationship with the editorial staff or with the final judge are asked to abstain from entering the contest in order to prevent a conflict of interest. We comply with the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) Code of Ethics. The final judge is now Tim Parrish (http://timparrishauthor.com/index.php/about/about-the-author)

Entry fee: $15.00

Extended Deadline December 31, 2014. Winner announced and published in 2015.

theNewerYork Department of Forms and Records Contest

11 October 2014

theNewerYork Department of Forms and Records

is a large, desolate building

You can hear the wind whistling through our empty filing cabinets. The dazed bureaucrats in our skyscrapers have no one to direct. They have each other sign documents in triplicate out of boredom. We need your help to make our government real, because we’ll never be a real fictional city-state without halls of paperwork.

Fill our coffers with your weirdness

We need you to take the dull bureaucracy of paperwork, legal documents, laws, and forms and tell some stories, make some art. We’re looking for stories that looks like or are inspired by the drudgery of paperwork, straight faced legal forms, the sub-clauses found in laws, or the elaborate and confusing Terms and Conditions we lie about having read almost every day. Think fictional contracts, procedural documents, policy summations, court transcripts, and so on. We want to see how much drama, excitement, satire, and pathos you can infuse into the barren wordscape of legal mumbojumbo.

Entry fee: $11.15

Entry fee + judge’s response (critique/review): $26.15

1st Place: $511.10

Also:

  • Story will be featured on the website (and social media)
  • You’ll receive a framed and designed poster/printed version of the story
  • Free copies of all (5) of theNewerYork’s print books
  • “Stay Horny for Art” tote bag

2nd Place: $103.34

Also:

Runners-Up:

Several pieces will be chosen and put together to be printed into standardized-test-style pamphlets and printed on demand from the website, with royalties given. Depending on final numbers, we will probably send free copies to all included writers.

Announcing a Bibliophilia writing contest:

11 October 2014

“What does your avatar say about you?”

Ah, the avatar–as forum communities grow, new and creative ways of self-expression flourish. One such way is through the use of avatars, an image that reflects some aspect of the user’s personality. An avatar can either chip away at the bland anonymity of cyberspace or it can symbolize something private to the user–or both at the same time. It can deceive, invent, re-invent, encapsulate, magnify, or downplay. An avatar can relate to a forum member’s username, but it doesn’t have to. It may or may not be obvious to other members of the same forum what that avatar symbolizes.

Bibliophilia is running a contest to challenge our members to answer the question “What does your avatar say about you?” Write a fiction or non-fiction piece, or even a poem, that works with the visual component of your avatar and guides us in interpreting your avatar.

Entry is free. If you are not already a member of Bibliophilia, you can register for free, upload an avatar, and enter the contest before the November 1, 2014 deadline.

General Guidelines:

Entrants must be registered members of Bibliophorum.org by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1; registration is free.
Entrants must have posted an avatar to their user profile by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1, 2014 (see “Avatar guidelines” below).
Entrants must write 500 words of prose or less (exclusive of the title) or 40 lines or less of poetry (exclusive of the title) to answer the question “What does your avatar say about you?” Entries may be non-fiction or fiction prose or a poem, and must not be published elsewhere either in print or in any digital form (including online).
Entries must have a title.
Entries must include a cover letter with the entrant’s username, legal name, pen name (if applicable), mailing address, and email address, as well as a brief (2-3 sentence) bio that will be posted online with the winning entries.
Individuals may enter only once, regardless of how many user profiles they have at the forum. In the event that an individual is found to have entered the contest more than once, all entries from that individual will be deemed invalid.
Entries must be submitted by email to:
bibliophorum1 (at) gmail.com
with the required information and the text of the entry pasted into the body of the email. The administrator of Bibliophilia.org and Bibliophorum.org is not responsible for lost entries.
Judge’s decisions are final. Judge will not enter into any correspondence with the entrants.
No amendments, additions, or changes to an entry are allowed once the entry has been submitted to the above email address. You may withdraw your entry from the contest at any time by emailing us at:
bibliophorum1 (at) gmail.com
Simultaneous submissions are discouraged; please do not submit a work to this contest that is under consideration for publication elsewhere, and please do not submit your entry to this contest for consideration for publication elsewhere until the winners of this contest are announced.
Avatar guidelines:

Entrant’s avatar may not be a copyrighted image and must not be previously published in print or in digital form (including online).
Entrant’s avatar may not be blank, i.e. the entrant must upload an avatar to their user profile by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1, 2014.
The avatar must be no larger than 120 x 120 pixels and no smaller than 100 x 100 pixels.
The avatar which is the basis of an individual’s entry must remain part of their user profile until a winner is announced.
Prizes

The top three entries will be published on Bibliophilia.org and archived on the site with unrestricted public access. By entering this contest, entrants are thereby agreeing to have their entry published on the site.
First prize: five books authored by Bibliophilia members to be delivered to the prizewinner’s mailing address by regular post. Books will represent various genres, including poetry and non-fiction.

Second prize: four books authored by Bibliophilia members to be delivered to the prizewinner’s mailing address by regular post. Books will represent various genres, including poetry and non-fiction.

Third prize: three books authored by Bibliophilia members to be delivered to the prizewinner’s mailing address by regular post. Books will represent various genres, including poetry and non-fiction.
Prizewinners will not receive copies of their own book.
Judging

The judge for this competition will be Victor Martinez (*read a note from the judge below).
Entries will be judged on the basis of expressiveness, writing skill, creativity in answering the focus question, and the degree of congruence between the entrant’s avatar and written entry.
The administrator of Bibliophilia.org and Bibliophorum.org reserves the right not to award any or all of the prizes in the event that none of the entries are judged to be of sufficient merit.
The administrator of Bibliophilia.org and Bibliophorum.org reserves the right to extend the deadline in the event that none of the entries submitted by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1, 2014 are judged to be of sufficient merit.
Response time for the announcement of the winners will depend on the number of entries received.

If you have any questions, please email the forum administrator (bintarab) at:

bibliophorum1 (at) gmail.com
*A Note From the Judge, Victor Martinez

My name is Victor Martinez, and I have been asked to judge the Bibliophilia Avatar Writing Contest. You know how judging a literary contest can be, it all depends on how the judge feels on that particular day. I can tell you that most nights, I don’t sleep well, so I promise to take the appropriate dosage of pills the night before I get into judging mode.

As for my experience, I have written one novel, two plays, countless short stories, and a bunch of poetry. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and as a result I spent 16 years as an English teacher always with a ton of papers to grade, developing rubrics that would be fair to all students. So, all I can hope is that I will be a fair judge to all you writers out there. I look forward to reading your entries, and most of all, to your enthusiasm.

Green Lady Award for Fiction

11 October 2014

Green Lady Press is offering up-and-coming writers from around the world the chance to be published. We will award prizes for outstanding fiction, plus feature selected works in an online anthology for our launch. The theme is ‘resistance’ and we will be looking for innovative interpretations. Deadline is November 30th, midnight GMT. Winners and shortlisted entries will be announced in January 2015. The anthology will be made available free for all entrants and their families.

1st Place: £50

2nd Place: £25

During the competition process, exceptional entries may be singled out for ‘Author Highlight’ features which may involve a brief excerpt, Q and A, and link to the author’s website.

10th Sept update: we’ve had some wonderful entries so far! Should the quality of the anthology be high enough, we will invest in a small print run for The Book of Resistance; a beautiful book for sale in UK gift shops.

18th Sept update: please note that ‘resistance’ does not always have to be overt. We appreciate subtlety too, and the many ways in which the word can be interpreted!

Guidelines:

* The work must be your own, and previously unpublished in print or online.

* Word limit: 3000 words. We prefer shorter, highly compact stories.

* The entry fee is £5. A maximum of 3 stories may be submitted.

Sentinel Literary Quarterly – Call for Submissions

11 October 2014

Publishing Cycle & General Information

Sentinel Literary Quarterly is currently published on 31st January, 30th April, 31st July, and 31st October. The magazine appears in print, online and eBook formats. Due to space constraints, some items accepted for publication may only appear in the online version, while some may appear both online and in print. There will be some that will appear in print only. All items accepted for publication always appear in the eBook. What appears where is at the discretion of the editors and publisher. Please bear these options in mind while submitting to SLQ.

General Submissions Guidelines

Deadlines:

December 31st for January 31st publication.

March 31st for April 30th publication.

June 30th for July 31 publication.

September 30th for October 31st Publication.

Please note that if you submit your work within the window for a particular quarter and we like your work but may not be able to use it that quarter, we will write to let you know when your work will get published.

Poems: Submit up to 6 poems on any subject of 60 lines or less, or a long poem up to 200 lines plus 2 shorter poems. We generally like to see a range of poems from a poet to help us choose the very best from that author.

Fiction: Submit Short Stories, or Excerpts from Novels on any subject or theme up to 5000 words long. It is probably best to keep your story around the 3000 word mark. However a story needs to be as long or as short as it needs to be. If it has to get to 5000 words, so be it, but not a word more.

Essays: May be up to 10,000 words long.

Plays: Short plays or excerpts from longer plays no longer than 6,000 words. Plays may be on any subject.

Reviews and Interviews: These may be up to 3000 words long.

All materials submitted must be in English Language. We encourage poems written in other languages as long as they are sent together with appropriate translations.

The name of the author as he/she would like to be credited must appear on the materials.

Please send a photograph of yourself in Jpeg format to go on your page.

Copyright: Remains with the authors at all times.

Simultaneous Submissions: We discourage simultaneous submissions. The turnaround time is 8 weeks. Hopefully that is not too long for you.

Previously Published Work:

We discourage submissions of previously published work. If we feel strongly about a previously published work we may solicit it. If your work has been published elsewhere and you feel it has not been given the exposure it deserves, and you feel strongly about it, by all means submit it, but please mention where and when it was first published.

Payment: Sentinel Literary Quarterly does not currently pay authors any money for work accepted and published. Every author published in print will receive a complimentary contributor’s copy.

Important: Please submit only materials that are your original work. Bear in mind that Sentinel Literary Quarterly is a magazine and not a blog or discussion forum. Therefore the form and content of any work published in the magazine is final and any aspect of the work, or its authorship, may not be modified after publication. We may alter the content of your work if requested only if the work has been published online. Requests for modification of content, authorship or deletion will not be entertained.

Featured Country

From time to time we will have a section called Featured Country in which we will present a supplement on that country’s literature. If you would like to submit your work specifically for the Featured Country Supplement, please indicate that in your submission. For instance if you are submitting to the issue that will have Argentina as a featured country, in your submission subject, type: ‘Poetry Submission (Argentina Supplement)’ To be included in the Supplement, your poem, essay, short story, or interview will have relevance to the featured country. If we will feature a country in any quarterly we will make a call for submissions on this page.
