The Dream Quest One Poetry & Writing Contest is open to anyone who enjoys expressing innermost thoughts and feelings into the beautiful literary art of poetry or writing a story that is worth telling everyone! And welcome to all, having the ability to dream… Write a poem or short story for a chance to win cash prizes totaling $1275.00! All works must be original.

Guidelines:

Write a poem, thirty lines or fewer on any subject, style, or form, typed or neatly hand printed.

And/or write a short story, five pages maximum length, on any subject or theme, fiction, nonfiction or creative nonfiction (including essay compositions, diary, journal entries and screenwriting). Also, all entries must be typed or legibly hand-printed.

Multiple and simultaneous poetry and short story entries are accepted.

Prizes:

Writing First Prize is $500. Second: $250. Third: $100.

Poetry First Prize is $250. Second: $125. Third: $50.

Entry fees: $5 per poem, $10 per story

Description

The Jacobs/Jones African-American Literary Prize honors Harriet Jacobs and Thomas Jones, two pioneering African-American writers from North Carolina, and seeks to convey the rich and varied existence of Black North Carolinians. The contest, sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network, is administered by the Creative Writing Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. Entries may be fiction or creative nonfiction, but must be unpublished, no more than 3,000 words, and concerned with the lives and experiences of North Carolina African-Americans. Entries may be excerpts from longer works, but must be self-contained. Entries will be judged on literary merit.

5th Annual Stephen A. DiBiase International Poetry Contest

Description:

$500 first prize, $400 second, $300 third, $200 fourth, honorable mention prizes. One poem limit. No limits on the type or size of the poem.

Open to all ages.

Poems are written in English.

Submission gives your consent for us to print or read your poem at our May 2020 reading to which finalists will be invited.

Fall 2019 Travel Writing Contest

Award-winning literary travel magazine Nowhere is accepting submissions for our Fall 2019 Travel Writing Contest.

We are looking for young, old, novice and veteran writers to send us stories that possess a powerful sense of place. Stories can be fiction, nonfiction, poetry or essay, but please indicate which genre at the top of your manuscript. Entries should be between eight hundred and five thousand words (poetry may be any length and several poems, themed together, may be submitted as one entry), written in English and must not have been previously chosen as a winner in another contest. Previously published work and simultaneous submissions are accepted, but again, please indicate this. Multiple entries from a single author, submitted individually, are welcome. Every submission will be read blind, so anyone can win…

The winner will receive $1,000, with publication in Nowhere granted under First North American Serial Rights (FNASR). Up to ten finalists also will be published. Brush off your manuscripts or write something new and send it to the only literary travel magazine going.

2020 Amazing Women’s Edition Contest student book competition

Tell us about an amazing woman. The National Youth Foundation is pleased to announce the 2020 Amazing Women’s Edition Contest student book competition. Students are tasked to get to know women in their communities and tell us about the heroines. The contest is open to students in grades K-8. Prizes include $500 for the student(s), $250 for the teacher or parent advisor and the book is published and donated to schools and libraries across the country.

• Each entry must incorporate the theme of Local Heroines.
• From the time of submission, entries become the property of the National Youth Foundation and will not be returned.
• All students must be in grades K to 8 and live in the United States.
• Both the text and art must be solely created by the students.  Typed text is preferred, but not required.
• One book entry per person.
• Each submission must include one page of art for each page of text, except for the cover, back and dedication pages.  The back and dedication pages are optional.
• Each book must be between 20 and 30 pages. The cover, dedication and back pages do not count towards this number

• The book entry must be postmarked by January 6, 2020.
• An entry form must be submitted with each book entry (Click here to download form)
• Individual entry forms must be signed by each student participant and their parent or legal guardian.
• Students can work individually or in teams (maximum of 22 students).
• The book must be submitted in the order of publication.
• The pages should be numbered on the back in light pencil.
• All pages must be submitted on 8 ½” x 11″ or 9″ x 12″ paper.

2019 ACCENTI WRITING CONTEST

Topic
The topic is open. Any type of entry that meets the submission criteria below is eligible. Multiple entries welcome.

Submission Criteria
• The contest is open to prose works.
• Entries can be fiction, non-fiction or creative non-fiction.
• Entries must be previously unpublished and not under consideration by any other publication.
• Entries must be original and not a translation of a previously published work.
• Maximum length: 2000 words.

IMPORTANT
• No poetry, plays, reviews, and scholarly essays. No footnotes and endnotes. No pseudonyms.
• Submissions must be in Word or txt format.
• No email or fax submissions.

Language
• Submissions must be in English.
• Submissions can be an English translation of the author’s unpublished original work in another language.

Participants
The contest is open to all writers, established and emerging, worldwide.

Judging
Winners are chosen by blind judging. Four finalists make the shortlist, from which the judges choose the winner. The judges’ names are announced with the winners.

Winners’ names, bios and submissions will be posted on Accenti in May and reported in the Accenti Newsletter.

THE 84TH ANNUAL ANISFIELD-WOLF BOOK AWARDS

Submission Guidelines

The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recognizes outstanding works that contribute to our understanding of racism and our appreciation of cultural diversity.  Awards are given for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Submissions will be accepted beginning September 1. The submission deadline is December 31, 2019. The winners are announced in the spring.
