Here is a little blurb about our journal:

This is not so much a journal as a collaborative literary geography of the places we’ve read about, and subsequently visited.
We live thousands of lives through the pages of our beloved books, and sometimes we are blessed with the luck of being able to physically visit the spaces occupied by our fictional friends (or foes). This is a place to discover those spaces; and perhaps find a new one or two near you.
If you know of a destination or landmark that can be found in a book, or you have a sneaking suspicion of one, please, submit to us your encounter. Give us your thoughts, feelings, even pictures. The strange, funny, sad, and silly are all welcome here.

And here is a description of what we are looking for specifically:

Any piece published on this site must contain two things:
1. It must contain a physical place.
2. It must contain a specific geographical point from an actual book, author, genre, or period of writing.
I am looking for engaging, touching, funny, soulful, sad, silly, enchanting, and interesting pieces about the interactions between the fictional books we love (and the people that wrote them) and the places they wrote about, the places they wrote in, or the places they wished existed which now exist.
The only exception to this is literary landmarks that stand on their own such as libraries.
Preferably posts would come with pictures, but it is not necessary.

Call for Submissions: The Multiple eXposure Project Zine 1.0

Attention writers, researchers, photographers, visual artists, and image-makers!

The Multiple eXposure Project is a multimedia, multi/trans/inter-disciplinary artistic practice and research-based initiative that explores the many layers of image-making, participatory photography, visual ethnography, and performative encounter(s) between the image and the spectator.

We are happy to announce that we will be publishing the very first issue of our collaborative zine and we are now accepting submissions until December 31, 2014.

The theme of our upcoming zine is “Self-as-Subject”, an exploration of the “self” and its manifold permutations – its presence, identity, representation, liminality, and (dis)embodiment – in this day and age of digital madness, hyperreality and mobility.

The zine is multimedia so we are accepting text and image-based submissions related to the theme in any format imaginable such as: articles, essays, reviews, short stories, poetry, interviews, photographs (film or analogue), visual narratives, videos, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, mixed media, collages, experimental pieces, etc. Collaborative projects are very much welcome. Multiple entries are also accepted. Digital and printed copies of the zine will be released.

Some notes to remember:

–   Please include your name, short profile, country of origin, and blog/website (if applicable) in your email.

–   Photo submissions in jpeg format must include a title and description.

–   When necessary, please follow the proper citations (MLA style) in article submissions.

Announcing a Bibliophilia writing contest:

“What does your avatar say about you?”

Ah, the avatar–as forum communities grow, new and creative ways of self-expression flourish. One such way is through the use of avatars, an image that reflects some aspect of the user’s personality. An avatar can either chip away at the bland anonymity of cyberspace or it can symbolize something private to the user–or both at the same time. It can deceive, invent, re-invent, encapsulate, magnify, or downplay. An avatar can relate to a forum member’s username, but it doesn’t have to. It may or may not be obvious to other members of the same forum what that avatar symbolizes.

Bibliophilia is running a contest to challenge our members to answer the question “What does your avatar say about you?” Write a fiction or non-fiction piece, or even a poem, that works with the visual component of your avatar and guides us in interpreting your avatar.

Entry is free. If you are not already a member of Bibliophilia, you can register for free, upload an avatar, and enter the contest before the November 1, 2014 deadline.

General Guidelines:

Entrants must be registered members of Bibliophorum.org by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1; registration is free.
Entrants must have posted an avatar to their user profile by the deadline of midnight GMT, November 1, 2014 (see “Avatar guidelines” below).
Entrants must write 500 words of prose or less (exclusive of the title) or 40 lines or less of poetry (exclusive of the title) to answer the question “What does your avatar say about you?” Entries may be non-fiction or fiction prose or a poem, and must not be published elsewhere either in print or in any digital form (including online).
Entries must have a title.

My name is Victor Martinez, and I have been asked to judge the Bibliophilia Avatar Writing Contest. You know how judging a literary contest can be, it all depends on how the judge feels on that particular day. I can tell you that most nights, I don’t sleep well, so I promise to take the appropriate dosage of pills the night before I get into judging mode.

As for my experience, I have written one novel, two plays, countless short stories, and a bunch of poetry. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and as a result I spent 16 years as an English teacher always with a ton of papers to grade, developing rubrics that would be fair to all students. So, all I can hope is that I will be a fair judge to all you writers out there. I look forward to reading your entries, and most of all, to your enthusiasm.

Our Topic for 2014 – “Lincoln and the Hard Hand of War”

In 1864 the American Civil War became even more savage. Casualties rose and prisoner exchanges stopped. During William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea and Phil Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley campaign, civilian property was deliberately targeted. Was Lincoln in part responsible for this hardening and brutalization of war in 1864, or was it an unpreventable development–a consequence of war’s inertia? Should he have tried to mitigate it? Was this more brutal war and its hundreds of thousands of casualties and endless destruction justified in the effort to save the Union and destroy slavery – or was it not acceptable for any reason?

Contest Rules

• Please examine the rules below closely before contacting The Lincoln Forum or the contest coordinator with eligibility questions.
• The scholarship essay contest is designed for students who are FULL TIME, undergraduate students in an AMERICAN COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY during the Spring 2014 semester. The July 31, 2014 deadline is designed to give these students time to finish their essays, if need be, after final exams.
• You do not have to be an American citizen, but you do need to be attending an AMERICAN COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY during the eligibility period.
• It is NOT open to high school students. Key question to consider; when we contact your college or university registrar will they be able to confirm that you were enrolled as a full-time college student during the spring 2014 semester? If the answer is no, you are not eligible.

Call for submissions: A Letter To My Mom book project

I work at a small production company in Los Angeles, and our next book, A Letter to My Mom, honors the powerful, loving, complicated, one-of-a-kind relationships we all have with our mothers. It’s a collection of personally-crafted letters to moms written by individuals from all walks of life including celebrities, influencers, everyday people and kids.

We are trying to include letters from all over the country, which is why I am reaching out to you.  We want to get as many letters as possible – and provide the letter-writers a chance to be published in our book.

Here is a little more info on the books we’ve done: 

A Letter to My Mom will be published by Crown Archetype, a division of Random House, and is the third book in the “A Letter to…” series created by Lisa Erspamer, former co-EP of The Oprah Winfrey Show and Chief Creative Officer and Executive Vice President of the OWN network. The publication date is May 2015.

 

The first book, A Letter To My Dog, and the highly anticipated follow-up, A Letter To My Cat, feature letters from celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Tony Bennett, Kristin Chenoweth, Dr. Oz, Hilary Duff, Chelsea Handler, Dita Von Teese, Amy Smart, Mariel Hemingway, Tyler Perry, Cynthia McFadden, Robin Roberts and more.

 

A portion of the proceeds from every book in the series goes to charity, and for A Letter To My Mom, we are teaming up with Baby2Baby.  Baby2Baby supplies Los Angeles families in need with essential baby gear and clothing for their children up to age 12. By distributing new and gently used items to over 50 non-profit organizations including homeless and domestic violence shelters, Head Start programs and hospitals, Baby2Baby serves over 67,000 children each year.

 

Again – we would love your help getting members from your organization to submit letters and join us in this special project honoring our moms!

If they are willing to participate, they’ll need to write a letter with a maximum of 700 words, and provide a couple of favorite photos of his/her mom, as well as a couple of shots of them together, from various stages of their lives.

The 10th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest

The 10th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest officially began in April, as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month, with five new categories: “Once Upon A Time,” “Ten Years From Now,” “It’s A Miracle,” “A Journey Worth Taking” and “People Are Funny.”

Poets may submit a maximum of three poems, no more than one in each of three of the five contest categories.

Everyone is encouraged to enter the contest. Poets do not have to live in Lincoln, CA to be eligible. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category. Last year was the best year in the history of the contest. One hundred thirty-three (133) poets submitted 272 poems. We had 56 entrants submit 81 poems in the “Young Poets” category. The 2013 contest had entries from 34 California cities and 10 out-of-state cities from five (5) states. In addition, the Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest went international again last year. One entry came from Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. 

As such, again we are trying to get the word out about the contest to the largest number of people possible.

The Rules and Entry Form and the Contest Flyer, which may be posted, can be downloaded from the following website: www.libraryatlincoln.org under “Programs and Events.” All poems must be received no later than Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the address on the Entry Form. Early submissions are appreciated.

Call for Submissions: Holocaust Remembrance Day

The mission of the Poetry Super Highway
is to expose as many people to as many other
people’s poetry as possible.

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) is this Monday, April 28th. We’re looking for submissions of poetry written in response to the Holocaust for next week’s annual Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) issue.

• Please read and follow these guidelines carefully. Because of the tight turnaround of this submission period, we will not be able to consider any submissions that do not follow the submission guidelines, and there will be no time to resubmit.

• Submission deadline is this Friday, April 25th (midnight pacific) to be considered for this special issue.
• Send no more than 3 poems in the body of an email (No Attachments)
• Include a short bio which includes what city you live in.
• Poems submitted or published for previous PSH Holocaust Remembrance Day issues (regardless of whether we publishd them) are not eligible for re-submission. We welcome your previously unpublished on Poetry Super Highway submissions.

International Children’s Story Competition 2014 Are you the next star of children’s literature?

Find out by entering this year’s international children’s story competition run by Inclusive Works, Kazdu and Clavis Publishers! The theme of the 2014 competition is “Grandad, grandma and I in our multicultural society”. Submit your story for children aged 1-3 years or 4-6 years no later than 31 August 2014.
The two winning stories will be published as illustrated children’s books in both Dutch and English by Clavis Publishers.

Who can participate?
Everyone! Amateurs, professional writers – in fact any individual who likes to write children’s stories, regardless of age, ability, background, education, language, nationality, country of residence, etc. Individuals of 50 years and older are especially encouraged to submit a story!

How to submit a story?
Upload the final version of your story in either English or Dutch using the online form available at www.inclusiveworks.eu no later than 31 August 2014.

Background and objectives of the competition
Inclusive Works and partners organised their first international children’s story competition in 2012. More than 350 stories were submitted from 33 countries. The competition resulted in the publication of the following books:

For this year’s competition we are looking for children’s stories inspired by the interaction between elderly people and children in today’s multicultural societies. Entries should show, in a fun, playful and appropriate way, the important role(s) played by grandparents and (other) elderly people in the lives of the children in these societies.

The theme
Grandparents and other elderly people often play an important, valuable and fun role in children’s lives. This role can be very diverse, and can involve reading books, playing games, baking, gardening, visiting public places, recounting family anecdotes, passing on traditions, teaching children valuable lessons, etc. This interaction often takes place in a multicultural setting or happens between people with multicultural backgrounds. For this reason, we ask that the diversity in our society is positively represented in the stories submitted.
The prize!
The jury will select one winner for each age category: 1-3 years and 4-6 years. The two winning stories will be published as illustrated children’s books in both Dutch and English by Clavis Publishers.

The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony to be held in November 2014, at which the winning stories will be presented to the public and read by the authors.

Competition guidelines
The story:
– will take the multicultural society into account (for instance in the characters, their names, the composition of the characters, the place where the story occurs, the activities, etc.);
– must be written for children aged either 1-3 years or 4-6 years;
– may be realistic or have elements of fantasy;
– must be submitted in either English or Dutch;
– must not exceed the maximum word count for that age category: 600 words (age category 1-3 years) and 900 words (age category 4-6 years);
– should include no further text (description of the context, back cover copy, etc.) nor illustrations;
– must not have been published before, either by a professional publisher or privately.

MASON’S ROAD LITERARY PRIZE

MASON’S ROAD LITERARY PRIZE  — $15 ENTRY FEE. Submissions for Issue 9 are open until May 15, 2014, and we are looking for creative and unique interpretations of our theme: TRUTH. ?Please submit only one document in a genre for each issue, and limit prose and screenplay/drama to 5,000 words (double-spaced), poetry to 3 poems (up to 3 poems in a single document). Our submissions period runs for three months: February 15 – May 15, 2014. There are two ways to submit to Mason’s Road. You can submit for free any time during our submissions period, and your work will be given thorough consideration for publication. Or, you can submit with a $10 fee, and your work will also be considered for our Mason’s Road Literary Prize, which includes publication and a $500 prize to the best entry we receive.

Rhys Davies Short Story Competition 2014

Rhys Davies Short Story Competition 2014 has been revamped for 2014 with the inclusion of a brand new Under 21 Prize, and an increased total prize fund of £5,000 now on offer. Literature Wales is delighted to announce that the 2014 competition will be judged by Cynan Jones and Deborah Kay Davies with Gee Williams acting as Filter Judge.

The winner of the first prize will receive an impressive £2,000. The second prize winner will receive £800, the third prize is £400 and six runners-up will receive £100 each.

Under 21 Prize
New for 2014, children and young people can enter the Under 21 Prize for the chance to win a first prize of £1,000 – one of the largest awards for a youth competition of its kind. One runner-up will also receive a prize of £200. This competition will be judged independently by Rachel Trezise.

This could be your chance to make your mark on the Welsh literary scene. You have until Friday 16 May 2014 to enter your prize-winning story. Entry fee is £7.00 or £4.00 for Under 21 Prize.

Note: Both Competitions are open to all writers born in or currently living in Wales. Under 21 Prize entrants must be aged 21 years or younger at the closing date.
