Fabula Press’ Nivalis 2022 Short Story Competition

Deadline: Midnight, April 14, 2022

There is no theme for the contest; also, barring a few exceptions, we are flexible about genre. So while we are heavy on ‘literary fiction’, we would welcome a Poesque tale of horror, an enchanting work of historical fiction, or even light science fiction.

Word Count: Minimum 2000, maximum 6000 words. Slightly longer stories may be considered on merit.

Format: Stories must be in English, in a readable (Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, etc.), 12 point font. Format should be as .doc, .docx, or .pdf document. The contest will be blind judged, so the submitted document should only contain the name of the story, and no other information about the author.

Key Dates: The winter contest window opened will close at midnight, April 14, 2022.

Results will be announced in July 2022.

Simultaneous submission: Allowed, but authors must let us know if the story is accepted elsewhere before our results are announced.  

Prior publishing: Submitted stories must not have been previously published either online or offline. However, stories published in local journals, book club publications, etc. with a circulation of no more than 1000 will be exempted from this requirement.

Entry fee: US$ 10. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit, but every entry must be accompanied by the entry fee.

Judges: The panel of judges includes literary agents, authors, and essayists.

Third Prize: US$150

All other longlisted authors selected for publication in the contest anthology shall be paid an honorarium of US$75 each.

Contest Organizer:

This Short Story Competition (“Contest”) is presented by Main Street Wooster, Inc., a

501(c)(3) non-profit organization (“Organizer”).

Submission Deadline:

February 8, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time

Prizes:

First Place: $300, publication of Entry in the Daily Record, and audio version of Entry produced by WQKT.

Second Place: $150

Third Place: $50

Top ten Entries will be published in an anthology which will be offered for sale, proceeds to benefit Organizer’s non-profit mission. Each of the Authors included in the anthology will be provided one free paperback copy.

No other consideration will be given for Entries. Organizer may solicit sponsorships, and any funds raised in excess of the Contest expenses may be used in the normal course of Organizer’s business.

Submission of Stories:

There are no fees to submit stories to the Contest. By submitting a story, Authors consent and agree to all Contest rules, terms, and eligibility requirements. The Organizers are not responsible for any Entries which are not received prior to the Deadline. Entries must be emailed to Shannon@MainStreetWooster.org with the subject line “Short Story Contest Entry.” Entries may be submitted by one of two methods:

• Preferred Method: Attach the Entry as (1) a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), or (2) another editable text document format usable by the majority of commercial word processors. Multiple Entries may be submitted per email with this method.
• Alternate Method: Paste your entire story, including title page, in the body of your email. Only one story per email may be submitted with this method.

Repeat Entries:

There is no limit on the number of stories an Author may submit for the Contest (each an “Entry”).

Author Requirements:

The Contest is open to all legal U.S. residents who are (1) 18 years of age or older or (2) those under 18 who have the express consent of a parent or guardian (“Author”). Parents of minors must agree to sign any required releases which may be necessary.

The Entry Must Not Violate Any Laws:

Author must be the creator of the Entry and own all rights to the Entry and its contents. The Entry must not violate any laws, including but not limited to copyright, plagiarism, defamation, libel, the right of publicity or right to privacy. Entries may not feature characters, locations, terms, or any other content protected by another’s copyright, trademark, or intellectual property rights. Upon submitting an Entry to the Contest, Author represents that the Author created the Entry and has the sole rights to use it and to grant the Organization a license to use it. Authors are solely responsible for any infringement on copyrighted materials and will indemnify and hold the Organizers harmless from any and all claims of the same which may be asserted by third parties, including but not limited to the Organizers’ reasonable attorney’s fees incurred. Non-exclusive Permissions:

By entering this Contest, the Author grants the Organization a non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable, and perpetual license to use the Entry in whole or in part for any and all purposes related to the normal course of business of the Organizer or related to the commercial use of the Entry.

Previously Unpublished Entries Only

Contest is only open to Entries that have not been previously commercially published.

Simultaneous Submissions

Contest is open to simultaneous submissions of Entries sent to publishers, journals, or other contests at the same time as they are under consideration for this Contest. Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere Writing Competition

The story of Elgin’s past 1,000 years is now being developed into an exciting visitor experience through the Castle to Cathedral to Cashmere heritage initiative due to be completed by the winter of 2016 and which invites visitors to walk through Elgin’s historic streets and discover its rich history while accessing information onsite and online through an exciting variety of approaches. There will also be an interactive website for virtual visitors.

In short, the mission is to make Elgin a compelling city, giving visitors an unforgettable sense of place.

A key part of this initiative is to present and promote Elgin as a compelling experience through a collection of short stories.

Writers are therefore being invited to submit a previously unpublished short story of no more than 3,000 words set in Elgin and the surrounding area during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The winning entry will receive £350 and the second place £150.

The closing date for submissions is 31^st May 2016. Entry is free.

Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction Winner: $60,000; Finalists: $5,000

Prize Guidelines

A prize of $60,000 will be awarded to a literary nonfiction book published between September 18, 2015 and September 30, 2016 that, in the opinion of the jury, is the year’s best book of nonfiction. Literary nonfiction includes, among other forms, works of personal or journalistic essays, memoirs, commentary, criticism both social and political, history, and biography. Finalist works will demonstrate a distinctive voice, as well as a persuasive and compelling command of tone, narrative, style, and technique. The overall effect of such writing should provide the general reader with an informed, unique perspective on the issue at hand. The jurors will shortlist between three and five titles. Prizes of $5,000 will be awarded to each of the finalists.

Eligibility Criteria

• Titles must be published in Canada between September 18, 2015 and September 30, 2016. Books that are not yet in final published form by the final deadline of July 27 may be submitted as bound galleys.
• Books must be English-language, first-edition trade books published by a Canadian press, written by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Previous publication in another country does not disqualify a book.
• Translations from other languages into English are eligible and will be considered in the year in which the English translation is published. In the event of a translation winning the prize, the prize money will be divided as follows: $45,000 to the author, $15,000 to the translator.
• To be eligible publishing houses must have a professional editorial process independent from the authors whose books are submitted for consideration. They must not charge authors for publishing their works.

• All books must have an ISBN number and be available in Canadian bookstores.
• Titles may be single-authored or co-authored. Multi-authored collections, anthologies, and conference proceedings are not eligible.
• Self-published books are not eligible.
• Ghostwritten books are not eligible.
• No more than 20% of the manuscript can have previously been published in book form.
• Books whose author was deceased at the time of publication are not eligible.
• Publishers should note that the prize is for literary excellence; they should only submit books deemed outstanding in this regard.

Nomination Process

The schedule for submissions is tied to publication dates as follows:

Deadline 1: Wednesday, March 23, 2016 
For books published between September 18, 2015 and March 22, 2016

Deadline 2: Wednesday, May 25, 2016 
For books published between March 23, 2016 and May 24, 2016

*Deadline 3: Wednesday, July 27, 2016 
For books published between May 25, 2016 and September 30, 2016

Publishers are strongly encouraged to submit books prior to the deadlines. Submissions upon release of titles are appreciated. If a publisher, for any reason whatsoever, feels they cannot submit titles in accordance with the above schedule it is requested that they contact the Program Manager to discuss the possibility of an extension.

Number of Submissions

All Canadian-based publishers of original manuscripts may enter two books; companies publishing more than ten eligible nonfiction titles may add one book for every additional ten eligible books (or fraction thereof) on their nonfiction list, up to a maximum of five. See the chart below for reference.

Required Materials

The following must be submitted by the final deadline on July 27, 2016:

• Five copies of each eligible title in book form; or three bound galleys, with at least two copies of the finished book to be received by the Writers’ Trust upon publication
• A Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction submission form listing all submitted titles and planned submissions sent with the first shipment of books (do not send multiple copies unless you make changes to your submission plans)
• Publishers submitting more than two titles must provide a list of all titles published during the calendar year on which that publisher’s eligibility is based. This list should include authors, titles, and dates of publication.
• Electronic images of the author and book cover suitable for reproduction in print materials – please name each file as follows: “Nonfiction_AuthorLastName_FirstName” and “Nonfiction_AuthorLastName_BookTitle”. Contact the Program Manager for instructions on sending large images.

 

Jury Composition

The finalists of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction are chosen by a three-person jury. Each juror may request an unlimited number of additional titles from a publisher’s list. Such titles are on equal footing with all other submissions, provided that their publishers agree to abide by the conditions laid out in this document. The jury acts independently of the Writers’ Trust and is charged with interpreting the mandate and eligibility criteria of the prize, as well as determining which of the submissions best reflect the prize mandate. In evaluating the writing, literary merit is the sole criteria. The judgment of the jury in selecting the winners, determining eligibility, and interpreting these rules is final.

Announcement of Nominees & Winners

The list of finalist authors will be announced in September 2016 and the award will be presented in November 2016 at an event in Toronto.

Publisher Obligations

If an author is a finalist the publisher will agree to:

• Supply the Writers’ Trust with 18 additional copies of the shortlisted book for publicity.
• Affix stickers provided by the Writers’ Trust to all outgoing copies of the current edition of the finalist and winning books and include prize sticker artwork on any subsequent editions.
• Participate in promotion and publicity efforts undertaken by the Writers’ Trust and stress the importance of this with their authors.
